Anyone else not impressed?

Don't get me wrong, there were a few stamp sets I liked in the SU! catalog, but I was disappointed there wasn't more. For instance, with the stamp set with the shoes - was that the best job they could do designing a shoe stamp? Sometimes it just looks like a 10 year old drew some of those images. Please remember (because I don't want to start a war) I am not trying to put SU! down, just a little disappointed.

thechecker 08-08-2008 07:54 AM

I haven't seen it yet, but from the previews I haven't seen anything I must have... so we shall see! :)

Anne

Gizelabella 08-08-2008 07:57 AM

Have to agree, nothing jumped out and grabbed me. A couple must have-s from last year that I didn't get yet, but I agree. DARN...I was really looking forward to the new catty.

Shopping Diva 08-08-2008 08:02 AM

Well, maybe all is not lost. Maybe the sets in the mini's will be better.

Gina K. Designs 08-08-2008 08:08 AM

I know that lots of times new stamp sets grab you after you've seen some awesome projects created with them.

I'm sure all the fabulous SU demos here will show some adorable projects that will have us all saying, "OMGosh! I have to have that set!"

I can't wait to play with all the new "In colors!"

serialpurrs 08-08-2008 08:13 AM

I haven't seen the catty yet, but the sneak peaks I've seen I've mostly liked. But they got to try and attract as many people as possible and sometimes it just isn't possible to make every set attractive to every customer.

austamper 08-08-2008 08:18 AM

I know how you feel. That's how I felt with the last catty. This new catty though I'm totally thrilled and excited about. I think it really depends on your tastes.

It's totally ok in my opinion to voice your disappointment. ;)

sprtchick 08-08-2008 08:25 AM

The new Designer Papers are all so beautiful it is hard not to be able to order one of each..the new punches...ribbons and in color products are wonderful. I have not had any problems building a list of things I gotta have. I have a long list of stamp sets as well and I just ordered a BS so I can enjoy all the exclusive dies SU will be offering...It is going to be an exciting year!
Blessings.

ebethneu 08-08-2008 08:28 AM

I was less than thrilled as well. I wasn't excited over the last catty so I was really itching to see some new stuff. I didn't like any of the preview items so I was really holding out hope for the catty, but there is nothing I couldn't live without.

I liked a couple of the new punches, but with my nesties I get so much more for a similar price and don't have something heavy and clunky. And I thought the big-shot was a bit odd, it seems that most people have a bug or cricket so why not make things for those instead of for a less owned machine?

I've learned that I shouldn't order based on what I see other people create with though. Everytime I have ordered a SU set I initially didn't like because of what someone else made it still sat unused because it wasn't really me in the first place.

ch 08-08-2008 08:39 AM

Send your ideas and requests to SU--it just might turn up in the next catty. Customers have been asking for a set with drink glasses--now we have 'Cheers to You'. I love the catty and think there is a fun variety. Sorry you are unhappy.

Babsnelson 08-08-2008 08:43 AM

I have to admit that I wasn't overwhelmed with the new catty either. For me, I think it's because there are so many other companies out there that are putting out great sets at great prices (papertrey, Gina K, Lizzie Anne, My Favorite Things, etc.) I'm still buying just as many stamps as in years past, just not from Stampin Up.

I do, however, *love* SU cardstock and ink. That is where most of my SU dollars go now days.

jazzytobi 08-08-2008 09:23 AM

i just got all the new in-colors and DP and can't wait to create with it!!! the preview sets did NOTHING for me.. i don't get the whole sock monkey thing.. but i'm looking forward to seeing the other new sets though.

I was really disappointed in last year's catalog, and if it weren't for buying cardstock, I wouldn't have even had $100 order for the SAB order I made. The one and only order I made for the year. What I have seen of this catalog has me no more thrilled than last year's.

I, for one, am glad they went with the BigShot. I have one and love it!! IO have several friends that returned their bugs and cricuts because they had too many problems with breaking plates, blades, etc. I have never had a plate break on me and my nesties go through the machine like a dream! No chipboard shims or anything like that! I can't wait for the new SU dies.

Maybe it was ProvoCraft that didn't want to work with SU, not the other way around. I still think the BigShot is a sturdier piece of equipment that would be easier to stand behind, from a warranty standpoint. But maybe I am biased, since that is the machine I use and love!

twinwillowsfarm 08-08-2008 09:30 AM

My favorite sets in the new catty are all ones I already own. This one will save me a lot of money :)

I *loved* the last catty too, so I'm a little disappointed, but then again, they have to try to please everyone and we all know *that* is not possible!

wendalyn 08-08-2008 09:32 AM

I haven't received my copy of the SU catalog yet but was waiting till i came out to decide if i should stay in it or not. Hopefully there is nothing i like and i can drop it haha..

SammyStamper 08-08-2008 09:34 AM

We all have our likes and dislikes. I love the new catalog. I'm so excited over the Cheers to You set and I keep cracking up everytime I look at Christmas Lineup, can't wait to get that one. Love the papers and ribbons and brads!

There are many member companies on SCS that I just don't get but that is OK, it is a good thing otherwise I would be broke.

tx stamper 08-08-2008 10:01 AM

Yeah, but I was more impressed with this years catalog, than last years.
Last year I only wanted 2 sets, this year it's 7.
I like the new accessories a lot, though.

goofygirly36 08-08-2008 10:10 AM

i agree.....i wasnt "thrilled". I like the new In-colors. and im REALLY not liking the hostess sets.....

i would like to see more "colorable" stamps. i know thats not a word btw.

dmaggt 08-08-2008 10:35 AM

I just picked up my catty and there are more sets I want than I identified through the "preview" I saw. I am still not sure about the new "in colors". I've not bought much of their DP because I am into DP like Basic Grey and Daisy D, but I do like Urban Garden and Bella Rose. But if I get those, I'll need some of the "in color" cardstock -- then ink pads -- then refills -- then ribbon.

Last year I picked out probably 40 things I wanted, and only bought 1/2 or less so after I think about it for a long time, I always change my mind. I am going to try to be more picky in the future, as I am getting far more than I can possibly use.

Paprika 08-08-2008 10:44 AM

I love it, my wishlist is longgggg!!!!

binx 08-08-2008 10:51 AM

Shopping Diva, thanks for bringing this up. It's nice to hear/read a realistic spin on things - and it's neither all positive nor negative.

I, too, am looking forward more to the accessories than the sets. But then, I've only seen glimpses here and there so far. Whatever.

Whatever I end up purchasing is off the subject. I just wanted to thank y'all for your candid thoughts. It's refreshing.

ctab 08-08-2008 10:54 AM

I really really love this new catalog. I think it has a nice variety of sets, and there are sooooooo many on my wish list. It's a joy to flip through the new catty.

kphorse 08-08-2008 11:06 AM

Where are all the beautiful ribbons this year?? Hate the wide stripe stuff, wanted some more in color style like last year?

CKMom 08-08-2008 11:06 AM

new catty

I saw more this yr. than last. have 8 sets on my list, and I'll get some of the paper and maybe a scrapkit or two.

jpmayo 08-08-2008 11:11 AM

I just want to see it IRL!!!!!!!!!

I just picked up my new catalog at my demo's house, and will put together my must have list this weekend. I am new to SU! though, and this is only the second catalog I have seen so I am really excited!

There are some gorgeous sets, and the projects are what will sell the ideas! I will have a tough time whittling down my list! and I am so excited to see what everyone creates!!

Christie B 08-08-2008 11:25 AM

I got my catalog last night. I really like a lot of the new designer papers and the new In Colors. I'm more into amassing papers and embellishments rather than stamps. I'll give it another look-thru to see if any of the stamp sets jump out at me. If you're not too thrilled with this catalog, remember -- minis come out periodically, and there's a new catalog in January. Of course, I may think that none of the stamp sets are tempting, that is, until my demo uses a set for a workshop and then I think -- where has that stamp been all my life! So, I will just start saving now to be ready for when the temptation strikes me, and it surely will.

I hate the sock monkey! I have wanted to say that so bad,but I didn't want to hurt anyones feelings. I'm so glad I am not the only one who thought "what the heck?' when we saw that set.

You're not alone, I am right there with you!

I don't like 'cute' sets and the Christmassy ones that try to do cute just annoy me.

Anyway, that being said, I am glad I got my copy and have had one look through it. There are maybe 5 sets I would like but I won't be getting that many I'm sure.

I like the new hodge podge and the scallop edge punch.

I must confess a fondness for Sock Monkey, but, only because I'm a tremendous Carol Duvall fan and she always had cute thing for Sock Monkey--it was always fun to see where Sock Monkey would turn up when people sent pics in to Carol for her shoebox or other project that would sometimes get featured on her show. *happy sigh*

But, despite that, I don't intend to buy the set. Carol's the only Sock Monkey fan I've met personally, and if I sent her gobs of cards with Sock Monkey, she'd prolly think I was a stalker--we're not close friends; I just worship her from afar, as I have for (literally) ever. I got to meet her IRL twice--on the 2nd I had the privilege of guarding her wheely bag while she ran an errand.

heather30 08-08-2008 12:45 PM

I wasn't nuts about the past 2 catties, but based on the links I have seen I like a lot more in this one!

lazylizard 08-08-2008 12:45 PM

Many of the sets I bought in the minis made the catalog so that should save me some money, but as a whole, I was so disappointed that there is only one vintage type stamp and they turned it into a pun set!! I'm finding it harder and harder not to just order from all those new companies that offer the free shipping for a $50 order. That's about all my discount from SU turns out to be. I don't have to pay taxes on most of these internet orders either.
So with the increased shipping prices and taxes that adds up to almost 20% doesn't it? I love the style of stamps offered by Flourishes and Verve and Our Daily Bread. And although I haven't been a big fan of clear stamps, I have to admit they are growing on me. I do love Su papers and inks and will always be a faithful customer for those. But I'm with you on disappointments on the stamps!! I was hoping that shoe set looked like a shoe with dimension. Those flat unshaded stick drawings have never done a thing for me. I could draw those. Hey, you think SU would hire me as an artist????LOL

not quite creative 08-08-2008 01:00 PM

sock moneys

I still have the sock monkey that my grandma made when I was two--and another that has a skirt that I received when I was in grade school. While I won't purchase the sock money set maybe there are others who grew up playing with one!

I really enjoy Carol Duvall too:) And to think, You got to guard her wheely bag! Oh you lucky girl!

frankie 08-08-2008 01:59 PM

My catty came today and I'm actually thrilled with it. I guess it just really suits my style. My "must get" list is long and growing.

seaowl60 08-08-2008 02:03 PM

There are a few new sets that I like and will probably get, but I want to tell you I just got my Big Shot and I absolutely love it. I have a Cuttlebug as well, but the Big Shot has a couple of qualities about it that I really like. It's got some "heft" to it, has a bigger bed and so far the quality of the cuts are really wonderful. I also love that I can use all of the embossing folders, dies and embossing materials from other sources very easily. I think I'll use my Cuttlebug for some things and the Big Shot for others. But if not, I'll probably give the Cuttlebug to my Mom. It's a wonderful product as well. But I do like my new Big Shot a whole bunch.

What if you cut the pun saying off and mounted it on the side of the block?

I wish there were more vintage sets with realistic drawings, too, and will be sending my suggestions to SU. They're not going to know what we want unless we let them know! I do love those huge silhouette flower stamps.

BeccaP 08-08-2008 02:11 PM

I'm not as thrilled about this catty as I was the one that's retiring. However, there are some sets that I do like and plan on getting. For once, though, I am impressed with the paper and embellishments more than the stamps. I absolutely love all the new designer paper and will get a lot of that (as if I don't have enough already!). I, too, have been buying stamps from other companies (MFT and PTI being my favorite) so I'm more selective now, too.

deeth1 08-08-2008 02:23 PM

Just didn't see anything to get excited about. I already have two die cut machines that don't get much use so no reason to buy another. Ditto on stamp sets. Nothing I have to have. Actually I prefer the art work in older SU sets I already own. Many of the new sets look like a child drew them. Think I will save my money for Penny Black, Impression Obsession, Art Impressions and a few other companies whose art work is more appealing to me.

I agree with the sock monkey thing, alot of people seem to love it, but it isn't something that appeals to me, even though I have seen some cute cards made with it. As far as the catalog, while I still think that there are areas they are missing out on, I really like a lot of the new stamps and can't wait to place my first order! I like that there are some cutesty stamps sets, but it doesn't feel to me like the whole catalog is cutesy. I think that there is a pretty good mix.

pjw2855 08-08-2008 02:28 PM

I got my new catalog on Monday from my Consultant. I am not interested in any of the stamps. The only single stamp I do like is the sock monkey, but that alone. Certainly don't want the others in that set. So no stamps for me.

I go more for the accessories anyway. There are some new items there, but not as many as I was hoping to see.

I don't need any paper or ink. I got enough of that last year. New colors are not much different than previous ones.

I like the box and tote, etc. samples in the new catalog. Those I can make after studying the pictures a bit. I like the ideas.

Patti

Phantom 08-08-2008 03:09 PM

I found a half dozen sets I love and a couple of backgrounds. I really LOVE the new DP ... Urban Garden, Haiku, and about 6 others!!

We got ripped on the "vintage" selection... Shelli promised vintage somewhere in the last few months and yeah... one set that's punny. Disappointed with that. And what's up with Putt-Putt? I realize it's supposed to look child-like but it just doesn't work. And the sentiments - how lame. SU is always helpful in that respect ~ I can eliminate sets from my wishlist by looking at the sentiments that make no sense. Kind thanks? Uh... no. And Upsy Daisy - nice flowers but "Birthday Celebrations" ??? Is this a new idea that you send one birthday card and it's good for every birthday after that? LOL!!

Yep there may be some sets that I really am looking forward to this time, but it's more about the DSP and some of the accessories. And I'll be saving some $$ for Papertrey, Crafty Secrets, Verve, etc.

Momofoneson 08-08-2008 03:19 PM

Just got the catalog and absolutely love tons of stuff in it.

That was my thought too! I bought some of the wide ribbon last year but I don't like it. *shrug* As I said, they can't make everyone happy all the time and this time around is not 'my' time. I will buy some of the new punches, however, because I just *need* punches!

I love those vintage images as well. I can see them in a collage setting.

Shopping Diva 08-08-2008 03:58 PM

Exactly!

sv133 08-08-2008 04:21 PM

I just drove 75 minutes roundtrip to get my catty. I am very disappointed. It's the same old stamps only more expensive (the roses are beautiful but I can't spend $35++). There are so so many very exciting stamp lines out right now (Verve, PTI, Unity, Inque Boutique, Flourishes). They are creating new and different images and many are less expensive. I prefer to buy those stamps. Also, I agree about the thick ribbons. Why so many ribbons that are so thick? It's nice to have all the IN COLOR ribbons but again, at $10 a roll, I can't afford it. PTI makes gorgeous ribbon at a fraction of the cost. I love the IN COLORS but should I spend $45 for paper and ink that will be outdated in one year? I am disappointed that I can not put together a well rounded package at an affordable price. I hope that in the futute SU works to put together more affordable packages (ex. IN COLOR ink spots, all 6 for under $15, and IN Color ribbon packages).

muscadelfaces 08-08-2008 04:23 PM

So little that was new. What was new wasn't very innovative. I have purchased owl sets from 3 other place in the last 9 months, so another new owl set (which I would have liked before) just seems to me to be way behind with the trends. I found a few other sets about 6 months late for me to buy too. Other companies releasing monthly like PTI and MFT are taking the market because they are on the cutting edge instead of trailing. I cannot believe SU is STILL wood mounting and I think that will eventually just wipe them right out. 5 years ago I bought 100% wood. 3 years ago I was buying half wood and half UM rubber. Now I am buying 90% clear, 5% red UM, and 5% wood and then ripping it off the wood. I was just sure they were going to wake up by now, but they seem so entrenched in things, including in designs that are not new and fresh.
