What kind of thread for hand sewing?

I am going to start doing some hand sewing on my cards. I even have some dies for paper buttons on order that I want to use. And some button stamps I will cut out.

I assume I should use embroidery floss? What kind/size? What type/size needle?

I think you can even use #10 crochet thread and a large eye needle; blunt or sharp depending on the size of your holes.

For hand sewing, I always use the DMC floss that I have on hand. You can pick some up at Michael's, and it's cheap...less than forty cents per "skein". In the same aisle, you can pick up some embroidery needles. Keep it cheap and have some fun!

I use DMC floss left over from my cross-stitching days. I'm often pleasantly surprised to discover how well colors of floss I bought in the 1990s coordinate with my SU cardstock!

I usually separate the floss into two or three strands when using it on cards.

Another thing I like to do is use two strands of one color and two strands of another color in the same needle. It's subtle but I like the effect. Here's an example:

I prefer to use counted cross-stitch needles because the points aren't as sharp as embroidery needles. I use my piercing tool and a ruler first to make the holes for my needle, then go back and do the actual stitching.

Thank you, very helpful. I need to get into the craft store next week - it's a Ben Franklin and almost useless for stamping but lots of art supplies and very good for sewing. They should have the DMC floss and the needles. Are you using 6 strand floss?
