Default ACK! My Altoid tin won't close - Help please!

Hi,

I'm at my wits end here. Whenever I cover an altoid tin, the tin won't close or else it's very hard to open and close. I've tried everything I can think of. I didn't paint on very much paint at all. I even tried sanding some of the paint off (giving it a distressed look) and I still can't get it to open and close without a lot of muscle. What am I doing wrong?????

Thanks,
Christine

Maybe I'm the only one that has this problem. It wouldn't surprise me. Anyone else ever have this problem and how did you fix it?

Thanks

I had the same problem too on a couple that I painted. I had to make sure that there was no paint on the front where the lid closes and latches (where those ridges are to keep it closed) and then I kept opening and closing it (all the way closed and all the way open) so it kind of wore away whatever was keeping it stiff. I don't seem to have the problem if I don't paint the the perimeter. Mary

I am glad to hear of someone else having the same problem as I have...well, not glad your'e having trouble, but you know what I mean...? I also have had that happen on wooden boxes that I have painted - with one single layer of paint...seems to make it not shut properly any more. Now I sand down that area before I paint. Seems crazy, but I guess that is why the wood boxes are so cheap...and the tins are low cost too!

Whew! I'm glad I'm not the only one that has this issue. Well, you know what I mean. It makes me feel not so alone. I just ended up not decorating that one little area on the altoid tin, but I think I'll try sanding it down next time before painting.

Thanks!

Actually, there is a special sandpaper made just for metal - my dad used it on something he was making for me recently. I think it is called "hardware cloth" and he got it at home depot - that might work best for sanding and Altoid tin. I'll have to try it when I get home from work!
