Red face About to sign up as an SUD... I have QUESTIONS

First, my apologies.

I don't have an upline yet so this is where I'm coming to for all of my info beyond what the SU site can offer.

1) What is the "special hostess set" referenced in another thread? Is there something besides the Basic/Scrapbooking sets that I see on the SU site?

2) I *was* going to wait until after 7/1, but there are SO MANY retired sets on my list that I actually might benefit from signing up before 6/30 (NOW!). The only drawback that I can see is that I'd have to choose my starter kit cardstock out of an EXISTING color family (as opposed to the new, rearranged, ones). Any other pros/cons that I might be forgetting??

3) I am fortunate enough (not 6mo ago and maybe not 6mo from now) to be able to afford to get ALL of the ink pads, etc. up front... naturally I'll wait until after 7/1 to order those... are there any other MUST HAVEs that I should not do without? On my list so far: some of the basic/multi-use stamp sets, ink pads, cardstock, watercolor pencils, eyelets, ribbon, watercolor pencils & waterbrushes. WHAT ELSE??

Any other advice that you wish you'd had before you signed up, etc. would be WONDERFUL. I feel pretty overwhelmed by all of the choices.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I'm not a demo and can't really give you any advice other than what my demo told me. Get to know someone before becoming her downline--some folks have had bad experiences with inattentive uplines. Not all, not most, but some. Also, you can't demo with retired stamp sets (buy you can use them for fun yourself) so that might influence your choices on when to sign up. GOOD LUCK

If you are actually going to be demoing sets, please realize before you order that you shouldn't demo retired sets because your customers can't buy them. If you are becoming a demo just for the discount for yourself, then it won't matter.

I'm sorry... I should have mentioned that the retired sets are just for my "play" - I realize that I can't sell/demo with them.

If you haven't selected a upline yet or don't know who to signup under I would go to the SU website and put in your address. This will give you demo's in your area. Contact them and interview them before you make a decision about who to sign up under. Ask them questions like: how many in your downline? what support do you give your downline? meetings/how often? awards/recognition? can I talk to some of your downline members? ask to attend one of their meetings to interact with the other team members to see if you fit in.

This is a big decision and the more support you have from your upline and sidelines the more successful and less frustrated you will be. I know of many demo's who've signed up under someone who gave them no support or encouragement.

Feel free to email me ([email protected]) if you have questions about my post.

Good luck and welcome to the SU family!

If you get the Earth Elements cardstock in your kit, none of those colors are being retired, just some are switching into the neutrals family.

If you can afford it you get a one time 30% off discount (your first order over $150) I would get all the inks and papers and the MARKERS- I love my markers Make sure to order after 7-1 for the new colors to be included.

I, too, am considering signing up to be a Demo in July. My Demo suggested I wait til August because she said there was a special in August mentioned in the SU Demo newsletter but she didn't know what it was. If you were me, would you sign up in July or August or would it make much difference? BTW I'm (possibly) signing up just to be a Hobby Demo.

Yes and the word is out that SU! will be offering a new set of 48 colors of watercolor crayons, it's pricey but I'd put it on your wish list.

Question

Is the 30% off the first order or any one order within a given time period?

It's 30% off your first workshop order within a given time period.

I have to emphasize what Ashley Anne said: Make sure you select your upline carefully. Ashley Anne had great questions to ask. One other question I would ask would be. . what is your potential upline's goals for her business - does it sound like she will be around for awhile?

It is better to have an upline that is there and supportive who lives farther away than someone who is closer and doesn't encourage and support you in your goals.

The 30% instant earning is off your first hostess order placed in the first 45 days.

To find an upline, you may want to let the demos on here know you're looking. I don't know where you are located, but a really great upline may be right next door - or in the next town and it's worth a little traveling to have a great upline.

I can't live without the reinkers. I've had ink pads come that needed reinking. Well, actually just one, but if I had had the reinkers on hand, life would have been much easier. And the reinkers are great for watercoloring. And for the shaving cream technique. And for the . . . . Anyway, I would recommend them as a must have before the watercolor pencils or the new crayons coming out. They are just way to stinking versatile!

I agree with choosing your upline carefully. I will have all the support I want and need and it I am so comfortable w/ becoming a demo. I can not imagine no help!

I am joining in July for a couple of reasons. My first "workshop" is going to be my open house. So, I'll benefit from the sales w/ the free stuff and get the 30% off those sales (and advertising my first stamp camp there). My upline says July is hyped bcs of the new catty , of course, so sales are gtd to be higher in July than in June. In June most are simmering, waiting for the new stuff, except maybe buying a few retired sets.

Plus, I can choose new stamp sets and new colors in my kit. But, I also only have so much $$ right now and want to get the new stuff for workshops.

Oh yea, you will also need a paper cutter!

Invest in a paper cutter. Don't go with something less expensive to save money.

Another person trying to decide when to sign up. I would appreciate any info on an August special. Also, as a demo, do you have the opportunity to buy hostess sets? Or do you have to earn them?

Thanks for any and all help.

I was also debating on when to sign up and decided I couldn't wait until July. (It was hard enough to make it through the whole month of May!) I ended up sending in my paperwork on June 2 and received my kit on Tuesday. I'm very happy with my decision. I didn't get to order new sets, but I went through the catalog and made a list of all the sets I wanted for each price limit. I got 5 of the new ink pads, the new configuration of pastels, and decided on getting Earth Elements cardstock because none of the colors were being discontinued. I'm waiting until my first Stamp Camp to place my first hostess order and am hoping to get lots of orders to help pay for the huge order I plan on placing myself! Another perk of signing up in June is that you get a case of the old catalogs as well as the new. The old catalogs I plan on selling at camps/workshops at a discount.

Pat you do have to earn the hostess sets. So say the hostess didn't make it to the total needed to get the free sets. You could add a few things you want to the order and get the free set for yourself or you could also host your own party and get the hostess benefits that way.
Hope that helps!

All Stampin' Up! has told us about the August special is that they can't tell us yet. I know, it's very mysterious.
