Double-sided tape
I hardly dare ask this question, but... is double-sided tape safe for scrapbooking?

I'm warning you now, if the answer is "no", you'd better break the news to me very, VERY gently...

Melissa2boys 10-06-2005 01:28 PM

I hope it don't either. I have used it for years in all of my scrapbooks.

Bagpuss 10-06-2005 01:31 PM

Well, let's both keep our fingers crossed then! I'm going to bed now - so I'll have to wait till tomorrow to find out... :(

allidee 10-06-2005 02:11 PM

Yes, as long as it says acid free. I am hopeful you are going to be ok when you read this ;)

Melissa2boys 10-06-2005 02:39 PM

Dumb question.... but is all double sided tape acid free, or only certain ones?

Iluvcards 10-06-2005 03:21 PM

Not all double sided tape is created equally!
If it says acid free it's okay to use. I use Scotch brand. I get it at WalMart in a double pack. I used to get the one at the Dollar store but they changed their brand and now it doesn't say acid free. So to be safe I spend a little more and get the good stuff. Hope this helps and none of you will be needing any medical attention. Good luck.

The yellow label 3M one is acid free and that's what I use to adhere non photos to my pages. If it's a photo it gets photo splits from CM or 3m photo mounts.

hey guys. Here's somethign tricky that I just learned from a website that I cna't find anymore. I was doing a google on the exact same thing.

Double sided tape that says Acid free is perfectly okay. Anything else is NOT good for your scrapbooks. Here's the tricky part. the tape may say PHOTO-SAFE! or even Scrapbook safe...but that doesn't mean it's acid free!!!!!!!!!! Even if it says photo-safe, and you're worried about preservation, don't use it!! ...use only tape that specifically states, acid free.

tnd151 10-06-2005 11:09 PM

It's just that people are starting to realize the scrapping is a billion dollar industry and are jumping on the bandwagon by putting labeling on their items that safe photo safe or scrapbook safe. but they're not.

Oops. :( And that was "breaking it to me gently" in WHAT way? ;)

I've looked for the website of the manufacturer of the tape I use, but it's in Italian so, just to be sure, I've emailed the shop where I buy it and asked her to find out for me.

GREAT!!!! I use double sided tape also! I guess I'll just use it now for card making.

3M Scotch Double Sided Tape Photo Safe
I have the package in front of me. Can someone tell me where it says acid free? My package only says photo-safe. I have been using it to make cards for the past year and wanted to start scrapbooking, but I want to do it right. Thanks - Jo an

Personally, I don't want to take any chances with my photos. So, I used Creative Memories tape exclusively in my books. Maybe that's overkill, but I can't help but remember an old album I had in high school [I won't tell you how old :)] and all that yellowed, dried-up, tape in my book.

It may cost a little more, but in my opinion, it's worth it. I want me books to last forever :)

I use it ALL the time. I use the Scotch brand and buy it in the 8-pack from Sam's Club. It is acid free and does not have that piece of protective plastic paper on the top. The label is yellow and black. I love it. It is acid free so it's OK to use.

yooper46 02-20-2006 05:10 AM

Hi Shannon - the package I have is Scotch and it is yellow and black. 1/2" x 36 yd. The number on the box is 665. It does say photo safe, but not acid free. Is this the same as your tape? Thanks - I am just starting my first scrapbook and want to do it correctly. I have stamped a few years and always used this tape for that.

Acid free is ok BUT the main thing about scrapbooking that you have to think about is longevity. I personally use CM photo splits or tape runner in my scrapbooks. It has been tested etc (no I am not a Creative Memories Consultant I just like the products).
I use Scotch double sided tape on my cards and projects that do not go into my scrapbooks. And I have used the CM tape runner for some of my lunch box tins.

kaclarke 02-20-2006 06:21 AM

One thing to remember about the scrapbooking industry is that it is not regulated. Companies can claim something is acid free when it really isn't. I think it's safe to trust some of the major manufacturers in the industry (SU, CTMH, CM, 3M, etc...)
If you are at all concerned about a product being acid free then buy a pH testing pen to check the safety of an item before using it on or near your pictures.

willwork4stamps 02-20-2006 08:30 AM

And acid free really only applies to items actually touching your pictures. So use the acid free stuff for mounting the photos and use the other tape that may not be acid free for sticking embellishments and such to the pages.

Creating Keepsakes has a long list of sb products they've tested to be safe, and have deemed them "CK OK." I don't know if CK has this list on their website, but I'm pretty sure they still print the list in every issue of their mag. Anyone have a modern copy of CK?
