Smile Ok, so who can hear the mosquito ringtone?

Did you hear about the ring tone that kids are downloading so adults (and teachers) can't hear it:

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/06/12/te...tJvQHb5QAvl/aQ

Here's the link just to the mp3 if you want to check your ears...
http://graphics.nytimes.com/packages...0_RINGTONE.mp3

It's annoying like a mosquito, if you can hear it!!

It was on the new this morning. I was in the other room, so I didn't hear it, but DS who is 10 said he heard it, and the baby 18 months old that I take care of looked up at the TV when it was played, so she heard it, too!

My oldest daughter said it is very annoying! Not to me! hmmmmm.... wonder how I can use this to my advantage

Nope, can't hear it unless I turn the speakers up 3/4 of the way. I actually had to check to make sure they were turned on. LOL

Ha. That's funny that someone would come up with a ring tone that "old people" can't hear.

OK so my Dh, the geek that he is, found a spectrum analyzer program and tested the ringtone. It's exactly 15 kHz. LOL he can hear it plainly, but no one else at his office can.

I can barely hear it, more like a very high pitched whine than anything, or was that just feedback from my speakers??? My DS didn't hear it though, but the dog started whimpering....

I can't hear it, but all three of my kids are at the table eating lunch and they're saying, "What's that noise? It's so annoying!" I said, "Are you serious?" and played it again without telling them. They said, "There it is again." I don't get it. How does this work?

After I went back and listened again, I can BARELY hear a ringing in my ears. I definitely wouldn't notice this in the classroom. I'm 36, by the way.

It's explained in the news article link... your ability to hear high frequency tones deminishes with age. It's very high pitched, so older people can't hear it & kids can.

I didn't hear it when it was on the TV yesterday morning, but I did hear it when they played it on the radio this morning...it buzzed the inner ear...it's awful! I can't wait until I really CAN'T hear it! BTW- I'm 29 and DO have some high-frequency hearing loss...but I guess not enough just yet...

Ooh freaky!!!! I am officially VERY OLD. (47).I played it on my laptop. I couldn't hear a thing, but my 17 yo DS was sitting next to me and said that it was a very high pitched, annoying noise! He could hear it plain as day.

More validation that things are falling apart.

My cat didn't react to the noise, but the four seconds it played here gave me a headache. I couldn't figure out how to turn it off fast enough!! I'm 30, soon to be 31; I guess all that trumpet playing hasn't damaged the ole ears too much yet.

I tested my office. I think I'm the only one who hears it. LOL - one guy heard the toilet flush down the hall and thought that's what he was supposed to be listening for! I think they think I'm making it up. One guy says he hears it, but I think he's imagining it because he would say, "It just stopped!" And it would still be going.

I can hear it also. It kind of reminds me of that high pitch noise you can sometimes hear when a tv is left on - sometimes you hear it at electronic stores.

That's exactly how I described it to the people at work who couldn't hear it! But even then they didn't know what I was talking about.

I can tell if the tv downstairs is left on from upstairs at home & everybody thinks I'm crazy.

I'm a couple months from 40 and I can hear it. I must admit though, that about half-way through the tone was less noticeable.

I don't know if I'd recognize it while teaching, unless it rang for more than a couple seconds. When I was teaching at the high school level it was only after I got "pushed over the edge" that I'd realize that someone was tapping their pencil on the desk a lot. Noise doesn't usually bother me except for the stressful kind (like that ringtone and a long-tapping pencil).
