Default New fun poll!

Okay, we've had the mayo vs. Miracle Whip poll! And other fun polls that were so fun I can't even remember them (boy, that tells you how FUN they really were...totally blacked out the details, har har!)

So here's a new one...what do you do with the ends of the bread? If you vote "Other", please post and explain. Similarly if you voted that you make something with them, post and say what you make!

My DD LOVES the ends, so when I've used up the rest of the loaf, she's get a sandwich with it. So, no waste in my house. It's great!

Jen

P.S. I voted "other"

I flip the ends inside out and make a sandwich. Since the cut ends are out, no one ever knows

I throw them out. Yucky!

Unless it is fresh baked sour doe bread, then I would toast it, cover it with butter, and eat it up! Mmmm.

When DH was in Iraq I would throw out the ends but he thinks that is wasteful so now that he is back, he eats them. Funny thing is I saw one of the ends of our last loaf in the trash, I didn't put it there either so that tells you he did. Now who's being "wasteful" ROFL!

Hee hee...

My DH will eat them, but only if there isn't any other bread in the house. I throw them out for the most part (so I voted the first choice!)

My mom used to save them in a bag in the freezer to make stuffing at Thanksgiving. She doesn't do that anymore...now she just buys a loaf of bread and uses that (after she lets it sit out to get stale.) She used to have to be a lot more frugal though!

I voted for "I eat them", but I was thinking about crusty bread, like Italian or French when I voted - that's my fave part of the bread. - but, as for regular sliced bread, I chuck 'em.

I am a bread FREAK!! I love bread. Yummy yummy. the heels are the very best part. I eat them all the time, usually all by themselves. My dh will eat them if he doesn't feel like going to get bread and just has to have a sammich. My kids don't like the ends (but they taste the same, so what's the prob???). If for some reason the ends don't get eaten, I try to make bread crumbs out of them. Sometimes, they get thrown out, if they get too stale or if somebody else finishes the loaf. Nobody saves them but me. I used to keep a bag in the freezer of heels, but then I realized I never used 'em that way, so I quit.

On store-bought sandwich-type bread, I toss them out. I don't like the heel very much. However, when DH makes yummy homemade bread, the heel is the best part, since it is more crispy! I toast it and eat it with butter, if I can wrestle it out of his hands.

I save them and use them to make stuffing! That's what my mom (and her mom) always did, so I got into the habit of doing it too. Once I have about a loaf and a half worth of ends, then it's time to make stuffing The stuffing then keeps in the freezer until I need it for Yummy Chicken or just as a side dish. SOOOO much better than Stovetop!

Dh eats them if I'm not looking though

I never finish a whole loaf of bread before it goes stale so I've never had to consider what to do with the heels.

I totally agree with Shanon!!! Love the heels on homemade bread.....

I usually throw the ends out. My kids won't eat them, so why bother? My dad keeps his in the freezer and makes stuffing with them.

Homemade bread - definitely eat the ends.

Store bought, throw them out. Of course, I rarely have a loaf of bread in the house (I just don't eat it that much). I really wish they would make a smaller loaf for occasional bread eaters like me

Used to love the bread heels, yum!!! Now I can't eat bread anymore! But the kids and hubby do and never eat the ends, so in summer I bag 'em up, take little DD ot the park and feed the ducks.

Usually the heels get tossed out in our house. I used to put them in my brown sugar container to help keep the brown sugar moist. Now if it's homemade bread that's the first part I eat before anyone else gets it....

Straight to the trash can for me along with the rest of the crust! I think that the only good thing about the end of the bread is that it keeps the next piece nice and fresh!

I love the ends of a nice baguette for some soft cheese - yum! So I did say that I eat 'em. HOWEVER, I usually keep the heels on "regular" bread in the oven on pizza trays to dry out and then use them for breadcrumbs. (since there are only of us in the house my toaster oven gets used alot more than my big one... so I have to remember to check inside before heating it up LOL!)

We save it for the geese. There's a huge pond/mini lake (this depends on your opinion of it) where 2 geese and a duck live year round and during the winter more geese come. I save the ends for when the kids are bored and want to feed the duck. Saves money in the long run because they would want to buy a loaf to use if I didn't have the ends.

I voted for "nothing" because I usually chuck them... but sometimes I make bread crumbs out of them.

I voted Nothing! In a pinch dh will eat them. We usually keep them in the bag to keep the next piece nice, and then chuck the ends when we've finished the loaf - that's if we got it done before it went bad! Homemade bread is another story - we all fight over those!!

Other---but not telling what I do with them. Hee-hee-hee!

Actually, I've been known to do all 3. Most in our house will eat them, except that I can't eat the wheat bread at all. Sometimes I toss the ends (usually they are moldy, or it's just one end & is all dried up), sometimes I save & usually they are eaten. My expensive to make gluten free bread costs too much to toss out, so even if it comes out icky, I freeze it for some other recipe. Then I clean out the freezer months later & end up tossing out the stuff I didn't use & moaning that I wasted that money! LOL!

I think the bread end or "heel" on italian bread, etc is the best part. Especially if it is warm and has butter on it. As far as commercial bread ends, I usually give it to my birds as a treat.

I take any old bread and toss it to my chickens. They love it as long as I don't let the dog in the pen when I toss it to them. Otherwise Shadow (my lab/spaniel cross) will chase them away and eat it himself.

If it's store-bought bread, I leave the ends in to help keep the insides fresher. I do not grab the first 1-2 slices... However, when my FIL is here, he'll take the end piece and eat it and it totally drives me nuts!!! I'm keeping it there for a reason!!! LOL

If it's a fancy artesian bread or something, then I'll eat it just like any other piece.

My folks must have loved me- I *always* asked for the ends. They were and are my favorite part of the loaf- be it yummy french bread or a "regular" loaf.

If we are having tuna or egg salad we fight over the heels, but other than that we chunk them. Isn't that funny?

Funny to find this poll tonight...

I usually throw them out. However, just this afternoon my 5yr old ds asked for a sandwich made with "one piece of regular bread, and one piece of the bum part." What?!? He happily pointed to the end of the loaf and I happily made his sandwich with half "bum".

We feed them to the dog---he runs when he hears the bag opening. He gets the first heel usually right away and then the last one at the end. With 3 kids, bread doesn't last long here. When the kids were littler, we use to save the heels to feed the geese. I miss those days.

Your reply made me smile!

We would save the 'bird piece' for the ducks and till there was about a l/2 bag. Would put my son in his stroller and walk to the pond so he could feed the birds. I miss those days too.

Still smiling..

I voted other because I personally do not like the ends and I would throw them away (or feed to the birds) but my DH uses them to make a sandwich. Nothing gets wasted here.

I ususally pitch them. Sometimes when bread is low in the house I will use them but make grilled sandwiches using the heal side inside the sandwich so the kids don't know. I also keep a heel in the brown sugar bowl (tupperware type bowl) and it soaks up the moisture and keeps the brown sugar nice and soft.
