Default St. Olaf's College

My son wants to go there. He visited last week and fell in love with it. It is in Northfield, MN! -- so far from Virginia.

Anyone familiar with the school? I'd love some info to make me feel better about sending him so far away (IF he gets accepted).

Thanks!

My brother looked at that college years ago. He liked it because it was close to skiing. My mother liked it because it is a Lutheran school.

Good luck Joan!

It is far away (sniff)

I'm familiar with their acapella choir, not that would interest your son!

Other than that - dress warm!

I've heard really good things about this school. I worked at a school district and we had our seniors come back for a panel to discuss how their first semester went at college. One of the girls went to school there. She loved how close-knit the community was and how helpful the professors were. She said that it seemed like all of the professors were interested in helping her succeed in her education. Many of them are well-known and able to help students find internships and jobs. Its not too far from the Twin Cities, so their are opportunities for to experience the culture of that city (I lived there for 5 years and went to school there), as well as the many job opportunities that are there...

St. Olaf is a very recognized school here in MN. I have had friends many years go there and they came out structured and had lovely careers after words. They are very strict from what I here. I believe their sports programs are very good and at the top every year.
It is very nice here in MN and I am sure your son would be well taken care of there and would probably come away from there with great life skills.
If he can get in I would jump at the chance for him to go, it would be hard for me too to send my child that far away.

hope you find something that works for both of you.

I live in Northern Minnesota so am far from St Olaf but I would have loved to go there! Northfield is a sweet little town that isn't too far from the Twin Cities. Minnesota is such a nice place to live. It's embarrassing to me how much my little town really is like Lake Woebegon. I think everyone could use lessons in Minnesota nice- and you could come visit me and stamp when you come to Minnesota!

Northfield is the town of cows, colleges and contentment - it's on all the signs.

I graduated high school in Northfield, and many of my friends either went to St Olaf or Carleton because their parents worked there. My mom still works at Carleton. I didn't go to either school, but I do know that St Olaf has the better sliding hill in the winter!

Northfield is a really nice town, and there is a lot of culture there with the colleges. Students at both schools aren't really allowed to have cars because there isn't anywhere to park, but everything in town is within walking distance.

I know Carleton has a really long winter break, from Thanksgiving to New Years, so if St Olaf is the same, even though it's far away, you would have that long visit over the holidays.

Thanks. St. Olaf has a tiny break!!! They have a 6 week session that starts after New Year's.

So, so far I really like what I am hearing! I so appreciate this. I have no idea if he will be accepted but he and my husband said it was really nice in MN!

My son says he likes cold weather. But, seriously, he has NO clue!!!

I rode by there on Labor Day weekend. Don't think it is all that far from the Malt O Meal plant.

It's a very well known school for liberal arts. They have a strong music program. A very, very high percentage of students sing or play in some sort of music ensemble. Almost all Oles take part in a study abroad program at some point in their college career, either a semester or a J-term (January session). It's got a long, proud Scandinavian history. I think they still serve a Scandinavian dinner around Christmas! I'm not an Ole myself but I work with lots and know even more in my personal life. They are a proud bunch!!

Um Ya Ya!

It's not- that's one of my favorite things about the town- when it smells like Chocolate Malt O Meal!

Cold weather isn't so bad. We have warm coats and mittens and fireplaces to cuddle up in front of when it's realy cold! Snowmobiling and ice fishing are so much fun and the snow is truly beautiful.

Has an excellent reputation, as does Carlton College. I believe there is regular weekend transportation into the Twin Cities. Generally I think the more serious students are drawn to these schools. Everyone that I know that has gone to either school, has done extremely well.

I went to another small Minnesota Lutheran liberal arts college (Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter) and just loved it!! St. Olaf has a really good reputation as an excellent school and community. If the small college liberal arts atmosphere is what your son is looking for, I think he'll love it there! Good luck to him!

We had the J Term break, too. It was great! One year I went with a group of kids and profs from many surrounding colleges to Hawaii for a month to study the natural history of the Islands! Lots of opportunities to get to know the profs outside of the classroom, too.

I have two friends who graduated from there. The campus is quite charming and the folks who graduated liked the school a lot and are both doing quite well.

Not just a coat, but really warm mittens and gloves, a hat, a scarf and killer boots too.

Every year I try to catch the Christmas at St. Olaf concert on PBS. It's wonderful! Maybe you can get tickets and go!

Congrats to your son!

Congrats to your son -- I went to St. Olaf, graduated from there in '98. I choose to go there from the East coast to study Norwegian, it's the only college in the country where you can major in Norwegian (my mother was born and raised in Norway). And so of course I also spent a year in Norway while I was an Ole. I did have a tough time being so far away from family, especially teh first year, but it is a nice, small community school with lots of wonderful people. I still keep in touch with many folks I met at Olaf, in fact, I'm wearing my St Olaf sweatshirt right now!

Feel free to PM me if you or your son has any other questions!

Oh, and as for the weather, the cold wasn't the worst part -- the wind was! That wind really whips across campus. You get to classes so much faster in the winter than spring/fall!
