PS they all need the words edited this morning still. but, one thing I found that may help someone else is 10 minutes was not long enough at 40 degrees outside to melt/fuse the plastic so, if its actually fall at your house try 12-15 minutes before you attempt fusing.

Any suggestions for constructing these without a fuse tool? I passed when I had the opportunity to purchase one. It's getting to be crazy, with so many toys and tools for crafting. I'll have to invest in a storage unit.

I used 1/8" Scor-Tape to close the sides of my plastic sleeve. Here's my project:

HI Brenda! You can use red line tape/score tape like it says in the tutorial. I've also heard other people use a sewing machine and I'm thinking you could hand stitch this as well if you don't want to use the strong tape adhesive.

Another suggestion I thought of in case you don't have or don't want to use sequins, you could also use punched out/die cut pieces too! It may not make that wonderful "shaker sound", but it's another alternative to sequins.

If you need more ideas, be sure to check out the wonderful gallery too!! People are very creative in different ways!! I saw Susie just used some washi tape to hold it together on her sample!! Here's a look at the gallery: Shaker Money Holder by Shirleysgirl at Splitcoaststampers

OK....dumb questions coming up---is the money in with the shaker materials---so to get the money out you have to cut into the container and let the beads/sequins etc splash out? I don't have a FUSE tool either though I admit it looks interesting. alternatives to this double pocket thingy to still complete the challenge?

Hi Pansy! No such thing as a dumb question! The shaker contents are inside the plastic envelope and when you fold it, you will seal up each end to form a "pocket" that holds the money in there. The shaker contents are between the plastic....hope that makes sense?

You could also use red line/score tape or anything similar to this to seal each end together too. Someone didn't have a plastic storage sleeve and just used a clear envelope so that's another alternative too. Check out Anne's sample: FF16shakermoneyholder, Shakin Birthday!! by annsforte3 at Splitcoaststampers

Best gift ever by susie australia - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

Snietje's Christmas money shaker is brilliant - she used chunky salt!!! I love all the inspiration here.

I used Washi tape on mine, if you do this I suggest you rub the tape very firmly with a bone folder (or side of a pen) after you have sealed the side seams. I made some this arvo with a couple of 3 year olds. We used Snietje's great idea - salt, because I am too miserable to part with sequins. We used 2 snack size zip lock bags and just sealed the seams.

We also did them with buttons (because I have 9 million of them).

I asked the kiddies to give them to me for a minute so I could take a photo.....no way would they part with them LOL. Hope this info helps.

Question for any/all who know? So when the tutorial talked about using the FUSE and I didn't know what it was, I did what any self-respecting crafter would do and went to Amazon to see what it was. Wowser! You could get up to your eyebrows with "things" that go with it in a New York Minute(whatever that is). So----if you are a scrapbooker I could see using it a bunch....as card makers---what ways to you find to put it work? And I figure that the magic only works with the company plastic and those Avery Eller envelopes for clear stamps????

Like Susie and Dina mentioned, you could use simply a plastic envelope like SU! sells if you have one or anything similar or even a page protector, but you would need the dimensions for the pocket design which are two sheets attached together at 7" x 5.75". (As long as your pocket measures this in size, you can finish up the rest as in the tutorial.) You could use washi tape like Susie did her pocket as well. If you have anything similar to red line tape that is strong, it should work. - Also, if you don't want to make it a money holder, you could adjust the dimensions for it to fit a gift card too! Stacy actually ADDED a pocket to the back of her money holder which I thought was very clever!

Hope this helped give you further ideas!

Thumbs up

I've seen SO MANY different things done for card makers with this fuse tool! (This is the reason why I invested in one in the first place! But I have made full view shaker card (Here's a tutorial on that one: ) I've seen people actually make shaped designs for shaker cards with this too! If you are a fan club member, for the September gallery I made a shaker book mark with the tool too. I've seen tags and many other fun items using this tool! There is also a product focus with this tool on the Ellen Hutson blog they did just a few days or so ago as well.

You should be able to use ANY plastic product of your choosing with this tool because it is just something that heats up to create a "seal" and to "fuse" the plastic together is all.

Hope that helps answer your questions! Thanks for the interest and I look forward to seeing more creations in the gallery!

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions.. I do believe I have something I can make work as far as the plastic is concerned.. not sure about the tape.. I do have Washi, so that may have to work. ;) Thank you all again! I'm looking forward to trying it and I already have a design in mind. Yay!

I went by a Joann's today too Brenda and half considered going in to see if they had them.. I had a 60% off coupon.. but decided against it. I don't know how much I'd really use it. How much were they, regular priced, if you don't mind me asking? =)

So sorry to hear you're having problems with it! Is there anything I can help you with in using it? I know someone mentioned that they have a colder climate and 10 minutes wasn't enough time for the fuse tool to get heated up and needed to wait a good 20-30 minutes before it was hot enough to melt the plastic together to get a good seal. That may be a problem for you.I also learned that if you don't have a firm pressure when you are rolling it, it may not be getting a good seal either. There is a small learning curve to figure out what gives you the best seal. It wasn't perfect for me the first couple of times either. But now that I've got it figured out, I use it all the time and have seen so many people do cool things with it too.

I am really loving the gallery and how people are adapting it to work for their needs too! Check out the gallery for more inspiration: Stampin Up! Gallery: Shaker Money Holder - Page 1 - Cards & More - Splitcoaststampers

Glad that you were able to get one done! Hope this didn't sour you to not try out your fuse tool again as I've had fun with mine.

This was a really fun challenge and I'm hooked. I don't give alot of money gifts usually but I might start just so I can make these cute pouches.

I used a wood burning tool to seal my pockets and it worked like a charm. It not only sealed the edge for me but it cut off the excess at the same time.

I can sure see why a heat sealer would work the best!! This is a cute idea for gifting money. I actually made two, one for my DGS & DGD. We always give them a little cash in their Xmas stocking. Here's mine:

Default Fuse tool is the bomb!

Ok I must admit...I thought this tool looked cool, but this tutorial and the video of how to make cards pushed me over the edge...and just so happen to coincide with a trip to Hobby Lobby and a 40% off coupon!
(Shhh...Merry Christmas to me!!!!)

This is for my niece's 18th birthday. It'll have more than $1 in it, but that's all I had for now, LOL!
