Thanks Cynthia for the input!

Possibly I mis-phrased Bible Art Journaling Challenges- I meant several blogs such as Rebekah Jones that have weekly/monthly themes as well as Illustrated Faith and a few others...

Any thoughts from others? The theme or verse per month could be fun as Cynthia mentioned with our different styles and designs

I would prefer a technique based monthly challenge over a monthly theme challenge since I am planning to art journal Revelation which I will be studying in depth this coming "school year". Also, I don't know many techniques so I would love to learn more. For example, some of you are saying that you put a clear coat of Gesso on your Bible pages first and I don't even know what Gesso is. If you do decide to do a monthly theme challenge, I hope I can still post my Bible Art Journaling here.

Can someone please provide a link to Rebekah Jones' Site?

Thanks,
LM

I am indifferent on what the challenges should be. I just need to start! I will be doing mine in a journal as opposed to in a Bible.

It would be fun to see what each person would do with a verse(s) or theme.

You mentioned that there are already bible art themed challenges ... I haven't come across those, do you have a website or two that you would recommend?

Thanks!
I was mistaken about Rebekah Jones challenges, hers ARE based on doing art on a specific verse. With that in mind, I am fine with what ever type of challenge.

Another page to share with you all today! The study was Joshua chapter 1 and is from the Illustrated Faith Genesis Kit. My creativity went into overdrive with this one when it all started with a "circus strongman" die cut! LOL

As far as challenges go...I just love it that people have the freedom to come and post here whatever they have had laid on their heart! Be there a specific challenge or be it that you just have been reading and journaling, please continue to share whether it is a structured challenge or not! It's just so important to be in the Word either way!

Default Julie...Clear Gesso?

Hi Julie...I looked for Gesso on Amazon and saw many types/brands. Can you please tell me what brand kind you used for this. I know nothing about Gesso so I need some guidance. Thanks, LM

LM, I use Liquitex brand of gesso. A ligh coating is all you need. It just dries and then your page is ready to be stamped or colored or whatever else you want and most things don't bleed through to the back of the page then.

LMStamps- Gesso is a medium that is used to prep surfaces to receive paint and other mediums and it helps to prevent the page from bleeding through (artists use it to prep canvas, paper, Mixed Media projects and now Bible Art Journaling )

On my first attempt I used the Liquidtex Clear Gesso (this preps the page but does not cover up the words) but it dried was very grainy and had a texture like fine sandpaper. In my research, most artists like this texture for application of acrylic paint on canvas, etc. but for my Bible page, it tore up my pens

After more research I discovered that I could sand the page but it may still ruin your pen points. I inquired on a few sites about this issue and was advised that Prima ArtBasics Clear Gesso was very smooth as well as Tri-Art Clear Gesso (compared to the Liquidtex brand of Clear Gesso). Supposedly both of these brands will not destroy your Micron, Faber-Castell or Sharpie pens.

FYI- I have the Liquidtex Plain Gesso which I use for Mixed Media projects and it is very smooth but it will cover all of the Scripture on your pages and dries opaque vs. clear).

I just received the Tri-Art from Amazon (I checked online everywhere for the ArtBasics but they seemed to be sold out)...after I ordered the Tri-Art Clear Gesso, I saw a video that described using Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid vs Clear Gesso, so I ordered some of the glazing liquid from Jerry's Artarama....

here is the link to the video re: comparison of gesso, gel medium (not recommended as a prep surface) and glazing liquid...visual blessings: Bible Journaling Video: no-bleed-thru, wrinkle-free! Plus a Look Inside my Journaling Bible

As soon as I have a chance to try these out, I will let you know the results I wanted to prep the actual Bible Pages so I could add watercolor, etc but if you color with plain colored pencils or crayons (regular), you may not need Gesso to cover the page at all

Also, here is a link to Home - Rebekah R Jones- she has alot of information

As well as our own Joan with Artsy Faith- gorgeous work!

Thanks again for asking and let's keep exchanging ideas

Hugs to you, my friends - God Bless!

Hi there ladies! So glad to see we have more and more joining us. I am up for just about anything as far as how the challenges go.
I will be teaching my class through Aug (Bible Art Journaling 101) and we will be having monthly challenges based on scripture starting in September. I love the idea of seeing all of the different art works of the same verse/verses. This format will enable those not wanting to get (or spend ) a lot on supplies to continue to participate but also allow those wanting to explore techniques to have the freedom to do so.

Here are my 3 verses for this week:
Proverbs 15:1
John 8:12
Psalm 61:2

I am still undecided what to do. I have a problem with doing this in any of my Bibles. Afraid I will mess them up! It is not like I don't have a lot of them. But may just to the journal. I hate it that I am so indecisive about this!

Sharon, I fully understand I would recommend just using a journal at this time- that is perfectly fine!! Just start doodling as you reflect on God's word, stamping and using stickers is also a great option

Hi Julie...I was wondering if you have a report yet on the different page prep mediums you mentioned in your Post #89. LM

Hi LM! I am still waiting for the Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid but I did prep a few pages with the Tri-Art Clear and it was very smooth.....it accepted the watercolor and pen perfectly but did curl the page edges a bit (I understand that I could apply the clear gesso to the back of the pages as well and it may help with the curling).

Hopefully the Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid will arrive today and I will be able to test it out later this week

In the meantime, here is the page I created (I have not uploaded to my gallery or blog yet...will have to do this later this week as well)

Have a great day- hugs and God Bless!!

Karen...this is gorgeous! It makes me want to actually stamp in my Bible rather than in a journal. Are you still having problems with stamping ink bleeding through to the other side? LM

Karen, what you have created is so beautiful! How much bleed through did you get? Not that it would matter much to me.
I only have two to post this week. I've been sick and not feeling very creative.

Colossians 1:15-16 by junior tx - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

and this one:

Psalm 3:3 by junior tx - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

My last Bible Journaling 101 class will be posted on Artsy Faith on Wednesday. Our group wants to do monthly challenges beginning in September.

I have tried a multitude of inks (because I own a lot)
SU, CTMH, StazOn, Palette, Fun Stampers Journey, Memento, Versa, Ranger, and they all bleed thru in varying degrees. I don't mind the bleed through either. I have 2 Bibles for Art, in case I want to create on the backside of an already inked page.
Illustrated Faith has a good post regarding inks. HERE

Versamagic chalk inks and Memento Luxe inks are my go-to inks that do not bleed.

After 20 years of stamping I have so many inks, so I hate to invest in any more.....
but I am loving this art form so much, I will probably pop for more

Thank you for the info Dina!

Popping in to see how everyone is doing?? I have been busy getting ready for the new Awana year (5th & 6th Grade Girls only this year- my hubby and I are going to step down as the entire club directors )

I did receive the Golden Acrylic Glazing Liquid and covered a few pages in my Bible Journal with it but have not had a chance to create anything yet. The Glazing Liquid seemed to pucker the paper a bit more than the Tri-Art Clear Gesso- at this point, I am leaning toward the Tri-Art Clear Gesso as my favorite....

I am also a bit behind due to some Design Team work that I am trying to prepare ahead of time...hope to get back into my Bible Art Journaling soon!!

How are all of you doing? I know quite a few of you are preparing to start sharing Bible Art Journaling in your churches- so excited for all of you!

Hugs to you all and praying that the Lord blesses each of you this week!

Kristy- you are not a dunce!! I was extremely nervous the first time I posted anything to my gallery.

There are several great threads about uploading your photos and I would recommend reading those to get started...they are located under the Stamping Stuff- Start Here! Forum - this is the main FAQ forum http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...s-t128547.html and here is the thread regarding uploading to the gallery http:////www.splitcoaststampers.com/...l#post21054257

Once you enter the "Upload A Card" click on the arrows next to the windows under "Select Galleries"- in the first window select "Anything BUT a Card", in the second window choose "Books, Handmade Albums and Journals" , in the third window choose "Art Journal Pages" and then a 4th window should appear and choose "Bible Art Journal Pages"

Then you can choose your photo from your computer under "files to upload", then click on Upload and Continue.

On the next screen you are able to name the entry, enter keywords (please make sure that you include BAJ15 and Bible Art Journaling among your keywords- all keywords are separated with a comma), the stamp sets if any, ink, paper, accessories and a description.

The more information you enter, the better You can link to your blog if you have one as well. Once you save the project, you can open it back up in you window under "My Gallery", copy the link at the top of the page and paste it into this thread so we can see you work and encourage you

For the month of August, we were just getting started and had not chosen a specific technique, verse or theme.

I am praying about the September challenge and will post in a few days

We are looking forward to having you join in with us- hugs and God Bless!

How are all of you doing? I know quite a few of you are preparing to start sharing Bible Art Journaling in your churches- so excited for all of you!

Hugs to you all and praying that the Lord blesses each of you this week!

Thanks LM! My avatar photo was way overdue for an upgrade- lol!

I just use a disposable foam brush that I wash out and re-use the brush several times before I wear it out

I bought mine from Amazon (I think it came in a 25 pk for around $5 or so) but I know that they are available at many home building supply stores and most likely craft stores... I would assume that any brush would work but it may ruin the brush for fine detail painting...

I have 4 this week to share. I also shared the last part in Bible Art Journaling 101 class. The entire 6 part class is available for download or you can now view all the material on my blog: HERE

ROMANS 5:18-19

2 Timothy 4:17

Colossians 3:23

1 John 2:6

The middle two verses were the first time I used stamps in my Bible. I also used ink to color the images. I used a waterbrush and a blender pen on the hearts. The large heart (waterbrush) bled through a bit. The other smaller hearts did not bleed through. I used memento ink with the "Lord" stamps and it did bleed through a bit.
