I downloaded a couple of HA digital butterfly images and printed them out and I love them but...whenever I try to use my distress inks the printer ink smears. Even if I heat set it-even if I wait 2 days-even if I use different cardstock!!!! Should I toss my printer (which I'd love to do) and get one with smearproof ink? or does such a thing exist?
I did try the heat embossing but the ink sinks into the paper just enough that I can't emboss it. I'm sad because I love these butterflies and was really hoping to use them! Guess I will have to print them on patterned paper instead. Thanks for the sympathy and the input

I was having the same problem. Only with my images, I would heat set with a heat gun, sprayed fixative on the image but it would always smear everytime I would try to color with my copic markers. Then I tried experimenting with my printer settings. I set the printer to print on deluxe photo paper even though I had cardstock going through the printer. I noticed that the printer took a lot longer to print the page but no smearing of the ink. By the way I am using an HP printer and printing on Georgia Pacific 110lb cardstock. Hope this helps.
i color with prismacolors and baby oil, distress inks and watercolor pencils, so i had this problems too.
But i found a solution: Go on the settings of your printer and change the paper type from normal to fotopaper. But only change the type not use foto paper. With this change i stamp all my digital images and i had no more problems. :razz:

I used this suggestion, and it helped a great deal!!! Thank you so much for the tip.
I just changed the settings like printing for a photo, but used my cardstock. Helped so much! Thank you again! I hope your suggestion helps others!

Okay, I used to buy a “Fixative” spray from Michaels and spray my digitals a few minutes after they came out of my ink jet printer. I noticed that when using my Copics the ink seemed like it stayed on top and blending did not look good. Since then I’ve learned and found it to be true that the paper you use makes all the difference in the world.
This is a list of papers that work with Copics and I imagine any other alcohol inks. Probably found it on here, don’t remember. Ha!
1. Neenah Classic Crest #80
2. Paper Cut Luster White
3. Prism Simply Smooth
4. Copic Stamping Paper
5. Gina K. Pure Luxury
Copics do not work well with:
1. Stamping Up
2. Close to my Heart
3. Wassau
4. Staples
5. Georgia Pacific (Love this for card stock to make cards)

I use Wausau papers all the time (pretty much exclusively) for all my digital images and have never had a problem with smearing. I also use Staples once in a while and it performs just as well as the Wausau. The paper will make a difference as to how well your Copic inks blend, but it really doesn't have anything to do with whether the printed image smears or not (at least not in my experience). Whether your ink smears is dependant upon the ink in your printer. As mentioned earlier, the best way is to use the "photo" or "best quality" print setting for your printer if it has 2 black ink cartridges if you don't want to use a fixative. This forces the printer to use the black photo ink which, for most inkjet printers, won't smear with the Copic (or similar marker types) ink.
I have trouble with my card in my printer. It doesn't seem to like thicker card so then I'm not sure about colouring with my promarkers etc. I've also tried printing on water coloured printer paper for distress inks this seems to work okay. Also try changing your printer settings to draft this also works with cd roms too. Jenny x
I use digis exclusively. Here are some hints I learned the hard way. Heat set digi images immediately after printing, of course, but before you print set the printer to fast draft, or the lowest print setting. This will put as little ink as possible on the paper. After heat setting the image will not smear with Gamsol or WC. You might also look at the other hints on Mo Manning's website. Her hints tell you how to download, print, and size digis.
