DGC05: The challenge this week is to use this technique in a photo and then use the photo in a scrapbook page. I found the technique yesterday in this book: The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers by Scott Kelly. I LOVE this book! I tried this technique and it is the coolest, but I didnt have a chance to do a scrapbook page with it. So, I have to do the challenge with you this week. Look at the photos below to see what the technique looks like for the photo. You can add any level of colour from full saturation to basic pencil drawing. Please don't be daunted by the number of steps. I tried to write it out in the simplist way, which usually requires more words.
The technique will make a colour photo of yours into a pencil drawing. How cool is that?!?!?!
I will give the basic instructions, (in brackets I will add more info for those using PSE). It looks complicated, but it actually takes about 30 seconds once you know how to do it.
1.Open the photo you want to use. Create a copy of the layer (Control-J in PSE). Hide the copy so that it cannot be seen (click on the white box with an eye next to the layer in the layers palette). Now make sure you are now working with the background, or original layer (highlight the background layer in the layers palette). 2.Remove the colour from the background layer (Control-U in PSE and then move the sliders for hue and saturation to the left). Copy the layer (Control-J in PSE).In PSE this layer will now be called Background Copy. 3.Make sure the background copy is the layer you are working with (in PSE, make sure it is highlighted). Invert the photo, or make it look like a negative (Control-I in PSE). See photo #3 to see what it is supposed to look like at this point. 4.Use colour dodge for this layer (go to layers palette and find where it says `normal. Click and you will see a drop down menu. Go down to colour dodge). This should make your make your page completely white. 5.Then you want to go to Gaussian Blur (go to filter, then blur and finally Gaussian blur). Make the radius as low as possible and then slide it out until you like the amount of outlining, without adding too much blur or shadowing back into the photo. Click OK. Look at photo #2 to see what it is supposed to look like at this point. 6.Go to the coloured layer that you hid earlier and bring it back so that you can see it (click on the white box beside the layer in the layer palette). Then lower the opacity to the level that you like - the book suggests 20%. Look at photo #1 and #2 in the post below to see what this is supposed to look like the photos have different levels of opacity. 7.To add texture, texturize it (filter menu, then texture, then texturize, then hit OK).Repeat it you want more texture. Hopefully those of you who are using other programs will be able to make this work because it is so cool! I love it! If you are a beginner and there are way too many steps, try it slowly, or maybe you will like one of the `looks in the process and you will want to stop before getting to the pencil drawing. Personally, I also really like the look of the `negative, from step3, and I think I will try that sometime on a page.
If you figure it out with another program, please post any little things that would help someone else. Thanks!
If you play along, please share your hard work with us and upload to your gallery! Make sure you add DGC05 to your keywords (additional keywords are OK, just separate them with commas), and PLEASE post a link here in this thread; we would NOT want to miss it! Also, if you aren't a FAN CLUB member, please observe the NO UPLOAD on SUNDAY rule!
You can find all submissions for this challenge here: DGC05
Very cool! Thanks so much for the easy directions! I just made my pic and am going to print it out and make my page. Hopefully I will be able to post here soon.
I've just started using my PSE and am so thankful I found this thread!
Wow how cool is that? I'm pretty much a novice at digi pages, but I do have a program that just might help me on this one. It may take awhile and a few threats to my pc but I will conquer it. lol

I have Photoshop Elements 4.0 and got to step four but I don't have the same choices from my Layers Palette (normal or 'colour dodge'). Anyone know the other choices for 4.0? I'll look it up later, just thought I'd ask :-)

I just want to make sure you are looking in the correct place.
When you are in your layers palette, look at the top. Do you have a `normal' and `opacity' with drop down lists? If so, click on normal and you will get a list. Go down and that's where to find colour dodge.
I just tried it with Linear Dodge instead of colour dodge and it worked (in fact, it worked better). Do you have that?
I tried a bunch of other options, and it appears to me that you need a `dodge' command. Maybe you have one under a menu bar option.

THANK YOU! Okay am I a newbie or what...I was looking at the Layers option under the menu bar versus the Layers Palette...DOH (smack to head)! I like how it turned out on the screen but it did print a bit darker than I thought it would. I'm still using it in my layout but here is my photo result:

I can't do it. lol I have photo impact pro 11 and Scrapbook 4.0 programs I'm sure they have the ability to do this challenge but I just can't figure it out. Oh well when my hair grows back I'll try again. lol. Thanks for a challenging challenge.

This evening I made a family Christmas scrapbook page that is 12 x 24 in size.I combined Digital Scrapbooking Challenges DGC04, FDC05, DGC06, and DGC09 in this one page.
DGC04 had me using at least 4 fonts on the page. I have used five fonts.
DGC05 had me modifying the effects on a picture to make it look like a sketched pencil picture.
DGC06 is to created a 12 x 24 page with a picture in the center of the page.
DGC09 has me putting multiple pictures on the same page (as many holiday pictures as you can). I was going for a hallway feel with picture on the wall. I think I got that going for a Victorian look.
