It depends on what kind they are. You should report them to the building management. You can put out poison, use stuff that blocks them (put down lines of vinegar, baby powder, chalk or pepper - it interferes with their sensors) and they may leave your apartment. But it means they are likely to go to the next one.
When I lived in TO the building ended up having a massive ant problem. They were some type that were attracted to water. When one apartment would put out poison, they would just migrate to another. Then stay at the new place, but come back to the original later. It ended up spreading all over the building and they had to have a pest control company come out & put out several types of poison in several different treatments before they got rid of them.
Be very vigilant about cleaning up the kitchen; don't leave dirty dishes, glasses or anything else around; wash up the stove, toaster etc. - any kind of crumbs; seal up anything like sugar, nuts etc in good glass or plastic containers.

Oh yes, we did call maint. This was during the snow so Terminex has not been able to come out yet.
We're doing major cleaning today.... was wondering some 'natural' stuff to use...but also don't want to attract roaches. ...and didn't want to get too much poisoin b/c of my Mia cat.
Think we'll try baby powder.
Thanks Kell!

Well, to keep them out, cinnamon. Most ants won't cross it (the big red ones we have here will though).

Once they're in, I think boric acid is what you use. Those also kill roaches I think (we don't have real roaches here... just the big water ones that supposedly aren't actually roaches but just look like 'em. They're gross enough for me that I don't care.

Oh, and here, WATER is the culprit, not food. The ants around here show up if there's standing water. They'll go for food too once in, but if the water isn't there, they don't come in

watch them to see where they are coming in. We had them in the kitchen and they were coming in by the electrical outlets and a small crack in the grout. You can buy a tube of termite gel at Home Depot/Lowe's. If by the electrical outlet, take the cover off and put a small piece of cardboard in and squeeze the gel onto that. Replace cover. I also put small piece out on the counter as well. There are also sprays you can use that are non-toxic to animals and we sprayed that as well

Just got home from running errands- I am in for the day- although it's so sunny outside I should go wash my car like the millions of other people here. However, my headache is still there (I think it might be time for a visit to the chiro) so that makes me want to do nothing and I'm sleepy (can't figure that out)

Buy yourself a good quality hand creme & apply at night before bed. Between working with paper all day and the air at work being so dry, my hands have been really bad this year. I like this one: Burt's Bees
If my hands are REALLY bad, I will slather that on just before bed and then put cotton gloves on over top.

Kris, on the other hand here, I have to go to dh's work party tonight. We're carpooling with his boss and the sup that works for him. So it'll be a night of shop talk.

DD's hands crack and bleed from using all the foam hand sanitizers at school. She also put a cucumber lotion on at the farm that made her hands break out and 'burn' so we think she might be allergic/extra sensitive to cucumbers/pickles. DH says it could be the aloe but I'm pretty sure she's used lotion with aloe before.

I'm going for a meeting too. I've accomplished absolutely nothing on my goal list for the day, but I can't seem to keep my eyes open at this point.

feel for you about shop talk......We got out to eat with a couple that both work or worked with DH. A two hour dinner involves lots of shop talk. I just sit and nod my head and eat lots and lots and lots of chips and salsa. Oh yeah.....the margarita helps lots too!!

Ai yi yi. Looks like my crosstitching might be about to get a whole lot more 'spensive. I saw a piece on the news 2-3 weeks ago (I think I might have posted about it then, can't remember) about the high and rising prices of cotton and chocolate. I just got an email from a fellow stitchy night person who has heard that DMC will be raising their floss prices as of February. I have no idea what the current suggested retail price is, but I know that it is $0.49 a skein at M's right now. When the prices go up, DMC's SRP will be $0.74 a skein. If M's follows that, that will be one massive price increase!

What a crazy day! We got sidetracked when we went into town to the PO and saw our tiny grocery store having a going out of business sale. We ended up buying a large, commercial grade chest freezer to replace our old one that is slowly dying! Great deal! But now we have to clean out the old one and a bigger place in the disaster of a garage and then transfer the food! And DH called his folks and they'll be here Wed. to help rip up carpet and lay down laminate wood floors in our bedroom. I am sooo not ready for that and still have VSN samples to make! Ahhhh...the chaotic comfort of a crazy life!
