Special Request Project

Hi Everyone,

The email below was received through SplitCoast Contact Form. They have forwarded it to our group since it falls right in line with the giving type of people in this group. If you can help, it would be greatly appreciated.

Email:

Hello,
I work in the Activities Department at Good Samaritan Society in
Prescott Valley, AZ. We are a non-profit company with a minimum budget
for our "special activities". As you know many facilities are currently
closed to visitors. This makes it difficult for us to keep our at risk
Senior Residents alert and active.

I am writing to see if you would be willing to help us with a donation
of supplies or Card Making Kits. I believe this would be a wonderful
thing for us to do together as a guided activity here at the facility.
(My sister and I used to belong to East Coast Stampers when I was in New
Jersey so naturally I thought West Coast / Split Coast Stampers may be
able to help.

I ask that you kindly consider my request and if possible get back to me
at your earliest convenience. I can be reached at the facility during
business hours at 928-775-0045 ext.36549 or you can email me at [email protected].

Thank you !
Jennifer Bigelow
Activities Director
Good Samaritan Society
Prescott Valley, AZ 86314

If you are willing to help, please send any kits to:

I made up one set of kits today, and I’ll make more in the coming days.  I feel so sad for seniors who can’t have visitors.

Ldumont999 08-24-2020 10:41 AM

I just sent her an email asking the following questions. When I get the answers I'll post them.  I will be starting a few kits this week.
  1. Will the seniors in your group be interested in coloring their own images?  Or would you prefer pre-colored images?
  2. How much putting-together can they do?  The group I worked with were fairly young for seniors (50’s, 60’s, 70’s) so their ability to put together small pieces was not limited.
  3. Do you need a “sample” image of a completed card in each kit?  Or will the individuals simply put the kits together as they see fit?
  4. Do you simply want card fronts or the whole card?
  5. Do you need envelopes?

Jennifer responded very quickly.
  1. Will the seniors in your group be interested in coloring their own images?  Or would you prefer pre-colored images?  Some will be able to color the images (keep them simple) and some won't. So precolored images are also appreciated.
  2. How much putting-together can they do?  The group I worked with were fairly young for seniors (50’s, 60’s, 70’s) so their ability to put together small pieces was not limited. The ages of the individuals making the cards are mid-70's to 85.
  3. Do you need a “sample” image of a completed card in each kit?  Or will the individuals simply put the kits together as they see fit? If you can make a bunch of kits (all the same), then she would appreciate a sample card of how it can look.
  4. Do you simply want card fronts or the whole card?  She will take card fronts, but would prefer the base card and all the pieces to make the card.
  5. Do you need envelopes? Yes, she would appreciate envies to go with it.

How many of each kit are you making?

I'm not sure. Mostly I use digital images so it depends on how many print to a sheet. Mostly six, sometimes 4 (so I'll double it and do eight). She apparently works directly with each individual and helps them in areas where they can't do it alone. I don't think she needs a ton of of the same ones for a group. She seemed very happy to get whatever is offered her. Seemed very nice.

Carding supplies

Hi Janet:
I saw your message today on Splitcoasts Stampers message board.  If you would let me know what you are looking for or need I would be more than happy to send you lots of supplies.  I am 82 years old and thinking about setting rid of lots of my stamping supplies.  I have actually been contacting friends to let them pick and choose what they want.
You can email me at [email protected] or telephone me at 252-672-2447
I can give you a detailed list of all the items I am willing to get rid of.

I am so happy to see this! I live about 12 miles from this facility and have been wanting a group to help out. The nursing facility I have helped in the past is being really strict about letting anything in from the outside. I had made cards for each of them and found out they wouldn't take them (the policy may have changed, that was early in the pandemic - maybe I need to ask again).
I will get in touch with Jennifer.  Thank you for passing this information along!

I just sent you an email that i'm on board. I recently retired and got the time to organize and purge my scrapbook room. I'll gather a box of goodies and get it out to you within the next week.

I’ve been making one sample and seven or eight kits for that card in each batch.  I’ve made some birthday, thinking of you, get well, sympathy, and thank you card kit batches.

Anyone who says that there are not good people in the world anymore certainly are not fortunate enough to be part of this group and see the love, generosity, kindness, and care that each of you have for those you've never met!!!!  My heart is overwhelmed every time I see how you all step up and share your time, talent, and yourselves with each group.  Thank you!!!!!

I mailed my goodie box out today. They say possible delivery next Friday. I sent a little bit of of everything to make 100 cards. Some blank card stock cut to size, some card stock that has been embossed in different patterns. 100 envelopes, some buttons, brads, needlepoint floss, shapes, sayings, stamped images and i thru in a mini paper cutter.
I hope it helps. Send me an email if you need anything else.

Ldumont999 08-28-2020 02:50 PM

My box will go out on Monday. Large Flat Rate. Hoping to stick a few more things in it, but I put a whole bunch of punches I don't use any more, at least six sets of card kits, some tombow glue, some redline tape, and a few embossing folders. Whatever can't be used right now, perhaps can be used at a later date.

susie718 08-29-2020 08:10 AM

I’m mailing 34 card kits today.

ScrapperBecca 09-01-2020 08:37 AM

This is a great idea!  I'm going to take a day this week to see what I can pull from my stash to create some kits with.  :)

Excellent idea! I'll see what I can put together for kits and I have some punches I don't use I could send also.

Sarge 09-07-2020 08:37 AM

I sent a large flat rate box to Prescott Valley packed with all sorts of card making goodies.

I have started making kits. I'm not known for being speedy, but it looks like Jennifer will have plenty to use until I get my kits made. Then I will go through my supplies...

DebbieinOC 09-17-2020 12:28 PM

Packed and ready ship: 6 card kits (8cards/kit); 20 blank white card bases; envelopes; misc die cuts of various shapes and sizes; variety of papers.  Hope her group enjoys making cards.  This groups rocks with kindness and generosity.

SBinGA 10-07-2020 04:33 PM

I have a medium flat rate box going out tomorrow.  I didn't have any kits made up but I sent adhesives and a bunch of embellishments.

mouseyr61 10-08-2020 01:07 PM

Thank you for the beautiful thank you card. I'm glad you are getting so many card supplies. Send me an email if you need anything else.

Since this was originally posted 2 months ago, I'm wondering if the needs have changed for Jennifer and the people she's helping.  I'm just starting to do a "clean out" of my craft corner, but didn't know if she has all she needs.

russnzella 10-19-2020 12:22 PM

I would say that it is always an ongoing need. I have a friend who works for a nursing home here in my local area and she posted on her Facebook account how the need is so great for seniors during this time. This was her post:

My heart hurts. My residents miss human interaction with their loved ones.

We closed our building to visitors on March 13. No families or friends.

If you are so inclined, please send a card or flowers to a resident at a nursing home. You don't have to know them. You can send them chocolates or candies. Just something to let them know that they are loved. The staff will make sure to get them to those that need them the most. The ones who have no one sending them letters or family calling to check on them.

What will be a small cost to you will mean so much to them. If you don't know what to do, call and ask to speak to the Activity Director at that facility. They will help you. Anything will help them feel loved.

Think of your grandparents. Think of the fact that there are many that can't see their grandchildren. Spread love and positivity.

Hugs and love to you all!
