Default amputee in rehab

I have an old friend who has lost both legs, is on dialysis, and is currently in rehab, to build up and hopefully to learn to walk again with prostheses. He mentioned on Facebook that he'd gotten 4 cards at the rehab, and it really brightened his day.

Can anyone help out here? Al is a big guy, very bright, with an off center sense of humor. Loves to dress up as a pirate, used to go jump in the Detroit River in the dead of winter for charity (dressed in his "semi-formal" outfit of tuxedo jacket and Bermuda shorts), has been known to appear in a grass skirt & top hat at parties, and is inordinately fond of bright colors & tie dye. This would be an opportunity to use those slightly risque or downright rude stamps, if you have them- he has a vast sense of humor. We used to both participate in an indoor golf tournament invented by a very nutso friend- 9 holes of golf, played inside the house, with real clubs & plastic balls, while drinking. He's a proponent of Zen whitewater rafting- you get to the rapid, pull your paddles out of the water, and go where the river takes you. So, he's funny, adventurous, and an outside the lines kind of guy.

I would SO appreciate any cards you can send- he's certainly not going to expect this, I haven't mentioned anything to him. But I figure he's fair game, since he posted on Facebook that he'd like cards. Let's literally brighten his days!!! Pull out all the neons & brights you own, and get stamping! Thank you for your help, fellow stampers. You can tell him Pat Turner put you up to it!

**UPDATE** Al has gone home, but still welcomes cards- which I post in post #41 with his home address. They brighten his days so much!

I'll be happy to make a card for Al. I like your idea of requesting a shower of cards for him as he is facing some very tough challenges and needs to know that people are rooting for him.

Thank you, Rita! Do you remember the Paul Simon song "You Can Call Me Al"? We had a huge gang that used to go whitewater rafting, canoeing, camping, and such, and we'd sing that at the top of our lungs to him. I wish I had a way of putting a recording of that in a card, so when he opened it, it sang the song to him. I have a card ready to go tomorrow myself.

Pat, I'll do a card, but I'll need to think on it. I don't have much in the way of silly, but an idea is beginning to form!

Pat, I made a lighthearted pirate card since you said Al likes to dress up like a pirate. Hope it helps to keep his spirits high.

I put an eye patch on the owl from crazy birds! I stamped "just looking in on you" on the outside and "with my good eye" on the inside of the card!

I'm sure he'll get a kick out of whatever he gets. I just wish I could visit, but I think DH might object to me flying 1000 miles, just to lift Al's spirits. (He won't let me fly 1000 miles to have my hair cut by my hairdresser of 30 years either. MEN!)

I'll send a card to Al from Nebraska. Hopefully it will make him laugh. Moose says... and then inside there will be a "helpful" saying.

I'll send a card. Given what you said, it would be a favorite stamp that says "Broken crayons still color" - unless you think that's hitting too close to home. (Please don't mince words!) He sounds like a wonderful person. May I tell him his reputation is known as reported by you?

Love that song - and anything Paul Simon. Can he play mpgs on a device or does he have a CD player?

Just wow. There's tons of stuff out there with "you can call me Al" on it, from pillows to clocks...

I don't think that's in any way out of line, it's nowhere near as blatant as something I'm trying to decide whether to say. He is a special guy, and you can refer to me (he knows I'm liable to do anything, much like he is). I like the "Broken crayons still color" sentiment a lot- where did that come from?

I pull up the youtube video with Chevy Chase fairly often.

I don't know what he has with him at the rehab for music. I know SU used to have a recordable card, but who knows where one might find one of those these days. I love the cards that play music when you open them!

Riley & Company. : ) They have a lot of great sentiments. One of my favorites is, "Until further notice, celebrate everything." I even thought of that when grappling with sad news one day.

They're rubber. I prefer photopolymer stamps, but I've got quite a few Riley sentiments in my stash now.

Of course you can be more in your face, since you're Al's pal in real life. Thank you for doing this for him.

I'm working on an idea for a card! And I also may have a great large musical card if I haven't sent it to someone! It doesn't play "Call Me Al" but the sentiment in the card is really funny. I'll see if it would work for him. I'll look tomorrow. It's out in my garage and I need to get to bed so I can get to work early tomorrow. I'll check back tomorrow!
He sounds like a real character!

I mailed a card to Al today. Moose says: If I had some ham, I could have a sandwich, if I had some bread. Makes me laugh every time. Hopefully him too. I wrote him that the Moose couldn't find his tie dye costume to go indoor golfing.

My card for Al:

Happy Dust for Al by contrapat - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

I do love that sentiment! And the background, and the stamp. Hope HE likes it!

OK, ladies!!! Al is "geeked" by the handmade cards he's gotten! Yay! Apparently, these are the only hand crafted ones he's gotten, and he's impressed. I'm thrilled that he's getting a kick out of the cards. Waiting to see what he says when he gets mine (probably Monday)- it's the one I posted in my gallery.

Pat, the card shower you've arranged for Al may make all the difference in his rehabilitation! You're a good friend!

UPDATE!

I will copy & paste directly from Al's Facebook page:

"Things that brighten your day in rehab.
I have to do a huge shout out of happiness to everyone who has responded with cards and mail and packages! It is surprising how this can brighten your day but it does.
So when I do this I have to mention I started getting beautiful homemade cards from people I don't know.
It seems my friend Patricia, who I have not seen in about 11 years since she decided to move deep in the Midwest is a member of a Stampers group. They like to do very artsy things and they do some really cool stuff
And they are more than happy to show off their work to strangers just to be appreciated.
So huge thanks to Pat and the Stampers Club. We are starting to decorate a board at rehab and there will be pictures to follow."

You guys are the best! Thank you!!! He really does get a kick out of the handmade cards from strangers, LOL!

I'll be making a card when I get out of work today. Happy that I can bring some lightness into someone's life. Thanks for posting.

Al asked me to pass this on to all of you who sent cards:

"Are you kidding? I absolutely love this "card shower". What is the best way to say thanks to Stamper people? They are very very talented and so are you! The card you sent is gorgeous! I am assuming you either gave them a couple notes about me or many of them looked me up on Facebook because there's definitely a pirate-theme and occasionally mooses, or a grass skirt. So it's very personal and fun! For a guy who usually only gets cards at Christmas and maybe maybe one or two, okay one, on his birthday this has been great. I really thank you and your stamper Friends for all the joy that they have given me in here. I did reach out and find one on Facebook and thanked her and I got a nice reply but I wasn't sure what the ettiquite (sp.?) Was here. ( it's not like I can send them all an ice cream. Lol) I have most of the cards taped to the wall opposite me so that I can look at them regularly. The staff here comment that I have a lot of friends and I really do, in this case it's many of whom I have not met yet. But really, tell them how wonderful this is and how much fun this has been for me and what it's meant to me. Thank you Pat and all your stamperers. ( I think I just irritated a noun)"

He'll be there for some time yet, if anybody feels like another round? I appreciate all of you participating. Yay for craft buddies!!!

It's wonderful hearing how much he's enjoying the card shower .... thank you for sharing this with all of us. By the way, tell Al that you know of at least one card maker who likes his idea of sending ice cream! LOL!

Thank you Pat for sharing Al's comments about the cards we sent. I'm so glad he enjoyed the cards. Keep us updated on how he's doing.

As Rita said, I like the idea of ice cream!
