Default Do like the feel of an old well-worn book or a crisp new book?

When the new SU & TAC catalogs came out, this question came to mind. I LOVE the smell of new paper. I LOVE the feel of crisp almost stuck together pages. I wondered if people like that feel better or the comfort of a well loved book with pages so thin they are about to fall out, and that musty smell of an old book.

What's your preference?

The older the better..i have my Gramma's old Bible ..it's all in Polish..i don't read Polish..but i love the feel of it, and the smell..just knowing her hands held it..She read it every night.. I have it displayed on a stand. It must be at least 100 years old.
loves ya

Gail, that is so cool! I do love new books, but a book that belonged to someone special whom you love---that is the BEST!

I love new books. And I love to keep them new looking. I can read a book and it looks like its never been touched But I still love to lend them out to pass on something I know a friend would enjoy...and I just hope I get it back in almost new condition. I certainly don't expect it to look brand new after I lend it out though, so I don't mind it coming back with a little wear. I hate when people break the spines though...my peeve At least that doesn't happen too often.

I like new, but love old books. There is something wonderful about old books with sewn in pages and hard covers with gold lettering. I have one from the late 1800's that is a full work of Wordsworth and another complete work of Lord Byron. They are wonderful.

Dionne, I remember the first time I loaned out my SU catalog years ago. The borrower dog-eared the page corners. It did upset me! It's silly as it's a catalog & will be retiring, but still, it was MY book. Kind of like you don't dog ear a library book.

Barbara, those books sound cool!

Me, too! Of course, if this were the early 1900's in the country, I'd want my sears & roebuck all nice & worn soft! hee-hee!

Default Old worn Books

I have a slightly different perspective than I used to on this issue. If you are squemish about broken spines don't read any further. Because of severe arthritis in my hands I prefer books to be well worn. At a class I took on lifeskills at the local hospital they even had a workshop on how to selectively break the spine of a book at strategic spots to make it easier to hold and read.

That being said I work at a second hand book shop and depending on the rarity of the book we might not even take one with a broken spine. Rare enough and it doesn't bother us anymore. Bottom line it does affect the lifespan of a book. If it is a paperback I have no qualms about wearing in a book but a hardback or deluxe edition - no way!

It depends on the book...
More than condition...I want a good book that I can and will get lost in...don't care really about the shape it's in because it's going to "suck me in" anyways (or atleast I hope so)...

Now if we're talking about SU! catalogs...if I loan out a new catalog...I expect it to return in close to new condition...no dogged ears or anything like that (that's what they invented post it's for!)...I'm going to have to "reuse" it...kind of like in any store...you break it, you bought it...we demos should start doing that with catties...they cost money to have on hand and people should pay if they are going to ruin them...

Now, my catty...has tabs that I put in and is well used...but not nearly as used as my last catty...I stick to one until it retires...then all of my wish list is in the same place. I take my catty everywhere with me...just my thoughts...Happy Stampin! God Bless!
