Hey gang,
I have removed the word verification on my card making blog because I participate in many challenges. I have done a lot of work on my blog, and I am starting to get some notable traffic (~6,000 hits in 3 months). But I have been receiving spam comments as well. Mostly they arrive in the middle of the night, and 90% of them are identified by blogger and placed in the spam folder, but a few have gotten through.
Should I put the word verification back on each night? I would hate to discourage comments. What do you do? Is there any apps or widgets that you have found to help in this area? All suggestions, comments are helpful!

Word verification is just the worst - I think it will cut down on your comments. I just live with the spam - Blogger catches all mine, but I do have comment moderation on, so that if one gets through, I can delete instead of publish without inconveniencing my readers.
I like the verifier that MFT Stamps uses on its blog, but I don't know where you can get it. (It's simple math that has one of the numbers written out as a word; I guess the bots can't read it.)
Anyhow, like Lydia, I have comment moderation on (although mine only holds up comments AFTER the first 48 hours). I figure that when I do challenges and link them, most people will see them in the first two days.
I opted to do away with the word verification, but turned on where a person has to sign in to leave a comment. They can choose to remain anonymous, they don't have to enter their name, etc. This has worked for me...
I found that when you get noticed by real people, you get the spammers too, unfortunately. I don't like word verification (and Blogger's can be a bit severe!) but I resorted to it because comment moderation left me with too many comments to moderate and they were mostly spam.
I like the idea of moderating comments on posts older than 48 hours - most spammers pick on old posts, so that might work well.
I have verification on after I started getting a notable amount of traffic, through what I think is bots :(
It's unfortunate that I do that, but I have eased up on the comment moderation, within 7 days you can comment and be accepted right away after hassling with word verification.
Any comments made on blog posts older than 7 days are moderated.
So those people who take the time to jump through the word verification can see that their comment posted right away.
Yep, I also get spammers but for me it lowers my Alexa so I just deal with it. Most, if not all go to my spam folder and I just delete them all in the morning.
