Default Followers vs Email Sign Ups

So, I've been thinking about this for a while now. It seems to me everyone is so interested in having hundreds of "Followers" but yet this does not bring your new posts to your followers automatically. They have to go into their dashboard to view your posts.

Not sure if many actually do this or not.

What does show up in their email is your new posts when you post if they actually sign up for an email. Is this true or am I not thinking this through?

Bottom line.....followers are great and all but it seems to me a matter of quantity vs quality. I look forward to your input!
