Word Verification

Hi Fellow Bloggers
There is a huge internet campaign going on in the crafty blogs community, to 'get rid of word verification' - that's those really irritating jumbled up letters you have to type in before making a comment. I have quite a lot of traffic daily to my blog - and always try to visit everyone who leaves a comment. WV makes it sooooooo hard to do this!

I had no idea that you could switch this off (I did it two weeks ago and the number of comments I get has doubled since then)

Firstly, WV does NOT protect against viruses - you need an anti spyware programme for that
Spammers have found a way to get past WV, so increasingly it is useless anyway. I have never had any spam messages come through
If you switch it off, put comment moderation on, you get to see all the comments before they are published, it's working really well for me and hundereds of others out there

To switch off:
Go to settings
click on Comments
Tick OFF for word verification
Tick ON for comment moderation
Save Settings
You will now, when you go to DASHBOARD, see a notice saying 'you have 10 comments waiting to be moderated', click on that, read the nice comments, and tick publish

I am posting this only because I had no idea you could switch this thing off, and that doing so would not open your blog to anything harmful. It's all a matter of personal choice, but I am so glad I switched off

Yeah, I wish I had the ability to turn my WV off, but I use iWeb for my blog and that is not an option... it does it automatically. I know it is a pain... sorry! :rolleyes:

I started mine with it on just because I had heard of people getting spam messages and stuff, but I have found it a bit annoying when I post to other people's blogs, too.... so I decided to switch mine off a few weeks ago. So far I haven't had any problems with spam, so as long as it stays clean, I'll keep mine turned off.
