Default Photo proportions?

I feel like such a beginner, so maybe this is a silly question, but is there a good proportion for photos when blogging, and, is that setting adjustable on some cameras, or is it something you do afterwards?

Does that make sense?

DH bought a Canon Rebel and I know very little about it and need to read the book that came with it, if I can find it. Anyhow, the photos I take with it seem so long and skinny, I think they're 3x5. Is that typical of an SLR, or is that something that's adjustable on the camera itself?

When I go to put them on my blog they look really strange sizewise. I've tried resizing them in iPiccy, but I'm not sure if there's a standard that is used for blogging or just in general. 4x6 maybe?

Am I making this harder than it needs to be?

Your blog is beautiful and your photos look great!

I crop my pictures to all different sizes and proportions, depending on what I want to focus on - I don't think there's any standard size or proportion... but then again, I don't follow rules very well.

I host my images at photobucket. I usually crop first and resize second. When I resize, I try to limit the short side of the image if vertical to 400 pixels, and if it's a landscape picture, then the long edge to 500 pixels). The resizing program is photobucket automatically adjusts the other dimension to keep the proportions right from the original.

Oh, also, I try to set my camera to be taking what are basically 4x6 proportioned shots. I think the actual icon for that size says 3:2. Otherwise, they are more square.

I size my pictures to 800 px on the long side, in case someone wants to see a detail closer. In my blog posts I keep them to 400 px or 500 px.
