Default Changing backgrounds/headers etc

Hi all, here I am again with another question.
If/when you want to change your blog background, do you just d'load and install over the one you already display or should you uninstall the current one before proceeding?

I'm a bit of a fiddler and cannot resist mucking about with stuff but don't want to create too much havoc that I can't fix.

Any advice would be gladly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Mind you everything has to be easy to do otherwise I get overwhelmed!

What type of blog are you using? Blogger or Typepad or WordPress?
There are lots of free backgrounds you can choose from, from The Cutest Blog on the Block - Free Blog Backgrounds, layouts and more!, eBlogTemplates.com, Free Blogger Templates and many others where they tell you how to install. Many require you switch to a Minima Template first (in Blogger).

If you are using Typepad, then you can choose another "theme" at any time, but sometimes that then messes up the organization in your sidebar (which is easily fixed by re-arranging but.....).

Not much experience with WordPress.

I just did a tutorial on this for blogger. It's on my blog. The widget hack works, but you are loading both backgrounds which can slowdown your blog. People also sometimes see a flash of other background before your background loads. Especially when it's on certain high traffic sites.

Blogger has fixed this for us.
Check it out!
