I just learned that Operation Write Home will be finished this coming August. I have been making cards for them for several years now and enjoyed every minute of it. While I'm happy that their mission is a success, I'm also feeling a bit lost because making cards is a huge part of my life and I really don't want to give it up.
So what other organizations do some of you send your cards to? I know that there has been threads here before, but when I searched, many of them were pretty old threads and I wouldn't know if some of these operations are still current. While I certainly don't need to make as many cards as I've made in the past, I'd like to find something that keeps me going.

I am ready to send in my 3rd box. How sad not to make cards for them anymore . :(
Last Dec I had dreamed that in 2015 the organization would dissolve... weird
Oh no.... Mixed emotions here... What am I going to do with my cards? 98% of what I made went to OWH!!! I'm saddened. I hope this isn't the end of my expensive hobby! I don't wanna take up golfing!
Ditto, Peezie. The End of An Era message is very good news for our deployed soldiers and their families. But now what?
Perhaps when the dust settles a bit, Sandy might help in our search to keep on donating handmade cards to charity. A cursory internet search yielded very few viable alternatives; the majority of outlets were defunct.
Can anyone name Names of legitimate organizations who would welcome us OWH orphans and their handiwork? Most of us would rather be creating than playing golf!

You can donate them right here in our Cards for a Cause forum - we have great organizations with ongoing drives, and every October we do a huge drive for the MD Anderson Cancer Center too.

Another option is a local Ronald McDonald House. I take a box of cards to the one in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, every month or so. They also take donations of stamping and other crafting supplies.
Here is a thread about donations and the available houses:
I am wondering if there was a way to give to the PX's for the servicemen here. Once home they often still have financial challenges. You dont get rich in the service so having discounted cards there could be cool for them. Especially the wounded ones for whom a lot of their budget may be going to issues around that.
I too was sending all my cards to the troops and since that non profit has already closed as of April, I'm now sending cards to Ronald McDonald House that supports children and their families while recovering from cancer. There are several houses all throughout the nation, and some of us here at SCS as Barb pointed out above have taken on those locations that are near us individually to hostess card collections on a monthly basis.

I have a group of of folks from my craft group get together on a Saturday, for 6 hours. We make simple cards and we make them assembly line style. One person does the base cut and fold. Someone puts fronts on. One person stamps and another adds ribbons or bling. We make thank you, get well, happy birthday whatever we think of. The familes who stay there can use the cards and they don't have to leave their sick child. Very rewarding
A group of us made 180 valentines for the elderly. We obtained a list of the first names and room numbers of the residents at one nearby home. We personalized each valentine, and then the group hand delivered them to each room. It was a lovely experience.
I ran this at my office, and it was a volunteer activity that spanned from November through February. It was lovely for team building and community building at work, and it was lovely outreach.
One of the guys brought his grand daughter the day we delivered them, and they all thanked her and loved on her immensely. She recently asked when we were doing it again.
It was a lovely way to use up some of the cardstock colors i doNt really use any more. But honestly, I just brought all of my valentines stuff in and let people have at it. I gave them a recipe (heart cardstock base, doilies, ribbon, phrase, focal image) and they brought their personality to it. One guy found Chuck Norris stickers in the box of supplies that another gal brought, and he added Chuck Norris to some of the guy valentines.
I have incredibly fond memories of that experience, and that is reminding me to maybe plan that again this year.
My other thought is... Don't forget your own family and friends(like I sometimes do). Let's just say that I didn't give many valentines to my loved ones this year. I'm ok with that priority for one year, but don't want to make that a habit
