Hi Shelli!!
It's true that you cannot sell another company's stamps but not true that you cannot design samples for them using their own stamps. Apparently DS gave you bad information that made you turn down a great opportunity.
Response from Demo Support on Design Teams/while being a SU Demo:
Please know that you may design concepts for other companies; however, you may not sell their products. Additionally, you may design stamp sets for another company, as your job; however, you may not sell these stamp sets.
