I hope there isn't already a thread going that I missed, but if so, I apologize. I wanted to let all of you know, if you haven't heard, that Stampin' Up! is offering a recruit special during Sale-A-Bration. Anyone who signs up during this promotion, will receive 20% off the starter kit, and any stamp set of your choice out of the 2008 Spring/Summer catalog! I just thought it was too awesome of a deal not to pass along! When I became a demo, they didn't have anything cool going, so I wanted to let anyone who was interested to know, now is the time to sign up! Take advantage of this great promo before it runs out. Good luck to you all and Happy Stamping/Scrapping!

This great deal is killing me! I had to let my demoship go when my twins were born almost 2 years ago. Although I ended up a hobby demo and didn't have customers :-( Is it still $300 a quarter?
Yes, it is still $300 a quarter. I know sometimes, if you are ordering it all yourself, it does add up, but if you can just do two or three workshops a quarter, you can easily make this and have some money to support your own habit. Plus, now SU has their "bulk" buying program. Certain things like rubons, sticky cuts, and chipboard are items that you can buy in bulk in order to make using these items at workshops or stamp camps a bit easier and more affordable. Also, I doubt the deal will get any sweeter than this, so if you are thinking about it, you have until mid-March to make a decision!

This is great. I was just trying to find this out yesterday! Question... what about the pastels? Is that one you can't substitute? That's one I would love to switch up since i have them. The last time I signed up the same thing happened and I had two. Since it's 19.95 it would be cool if they would allow getting one of the color families of the water color crayons for the same price.
It is a great deal. I just know I won't have any customers so I would have to go into it assuming I have to spend the money and then I guess you never know if you find people to buy.
How did you guys find and keep customers? None of my friends are interested at all! My kids are not in school yet so it's hard.

Thanks for all the great info!!!!!
I have a perfect answer for you if you are at all religious. Have you heard of MOPS? This stands for "Mothers of Preschoolers", but is actually for moms and kids from birth. We love our MOPS group. It is a great chance to meet other moms going through a lot of the same things that we are, gives us opportunities for learning, doing crafts, playing games, etc. I gives the kids a chance to play, learn songs, have a bible story and a craft. Our particular group meets twice a month, and I absolutely love it!!! There are about 40 moms in our group, and it is one of the best things I have ever participated in. I hadn't left my daughter anywhere, other than with my sister or brother for a couple of hours, so we really needed some productive time "apart" if you know what I mean Also, not that it is intended for the purpose, but it is great for meeting new friends and potential new customers. You should be able to go to www.mops.org for more information and to locate one in your area. I highly recommend it. Good luck!

I would love to sign up, but as a hobby demo. What holds me back is the required minimums plus the fact that my area is saturated with demos ... all of whom are awesome artists!
My area also has a fair amount of demos, but there seems to be plenty to go around. You just need to carve out your own niche. If you are thinking of being mainly a hobby demo, or even a full fledged demo, maybe just start out having a "girl's night" get together at your house for fellow stampers/scrappers. I have my own version of PMS night "Popcorn, music, and stamping/scrapping". I provide popcorn and lemonade, and they bring whatever they are working on and their favorite CD. The CD's everyone brings are great conversation starters, as it is interesting to see what everyone is into these days. When they see how you use your own tools and stamps, sometimes things just sell themselves. I don't charge anything for the PMS nights. I enjoy them as much as my friends/customers do. Just make sure an talk up any promotions that are going on, and just casually say if anyone needs anything, I am going to put together an order. You'll be surprised how fast you meet your minimum's. Also, I haven't done this yet, but many talk about doing classes at senior centers, libraries, etc. I have actually done a scrapbooking class at church with the Sunday School kids. They really enjoy it and they tell me how much their mom's enjoy scrapbooking. I'm hoping to maybe meet up with them, and start and scrapbooking club at church. Anyway, I hope some of this information is helpful to you!

Thanks for all the good ideas. I'm convinced around my area it's just hard,or it could be me :-) LOLOL
I am a member of a Mom's group which is where I met my current demo. When I was a demo I tried contacting the libarary but they don't allow stuff like that or posting of flyers etc. I don't have contacts at schools. But you are right if I can get even one workshop a quarter you can meet miniums quickly! It's finding the people who want to spend the money! LOL
I'm still debating for sure and then have to convince my DH.
You might check about helping or setting up a scrapbooking crop that you can be involved in. I have found that being a vendor is usually more trouble than it's worth. You could offer to do a make-n-take at the event, and state that if anyone has any questions or interests in the products or in having a workshop, to come by where you are sitting. Then just get down to business and start scrapping and hopefully they will come to you to see what you are doing (use SU products only of course!) and want to order or book something. If you need any other ideas/help feel free to PM me!

Thanks for all the info. I dropped off a few years ago...my area has too many demos and not enough clients. I hate to push people too. Great deal and definitely worth the looking in to. thanks!
You have to sign up under someone - the system doesn't let you sign up on your own.
That said, I have been a demonstrator for almost 13 years. Over a decade later, many of the girls in my group are now counted among my best friends! It is wonderful having ladies you love involved in what you do (most of us did not know each other when we began).
But, I have a rather large group, some I communicate with daily, others I hear from once or twice a year. so, you can make it work for you. I have local gals and girls from all over the US. With the internet, websites, emails, etc - you are connected easily.
I am in Indiana, my upline is in California and I have someone in my group from Alaska. Just find someone you click with and that is willing to offer as little or as much support as you think you will need.
Also, if you sign up BEFORE the end of the week, you can get two months free of the new website. Since you can do it online, if you sign up today or tomorrow, there is time to do it
With the add scrapbook add on, can you substitute the alphabet set and and the scrappin' kit?
Yes, you have the option of substituting the alphabet set (I got ABC uppers) and the scrapping kit. As long as the set you are switching for is equal to or less than the one they offer. SU! really makes it flexible for new demos.

Cheri is right, you can sign up under someone that you just click with anywhere in the US. I have a demo in my group down in TX and had one in MS at one point. I am in NE Illinois but the group I'm in is spread out all over the US and PR. We have large quarterly meetings with my upline in northern IL, so even though there are online resources, if you want to be able to attend meetings, ask the demos in your area if they hold them. It's important to not only have the online, but the face to face resources too. My upline brings in speakers from time to time, as do the other demos in our group who have large meetings. Those speakers range from business building skills to guest stampers from other parts of the US, to personal growth seminars. It's really a learning experience I never would get in my corporate america job. ;)

Ask your demo if she will let you work off your kit.

I have had a few over the years who held 1-2 book parties, then we used the money I would have earned as the demonstrator to help my new recruit to buy her kit. It takes a little more time to do it that way but it helps us both in the long run.

Reason: removed solicitation info
. . . so even though there are online resources, if you want to be able to attend meetings, ask the demos in your area if they hold them. It's important to not only have the online, but the face to face resources too.
The first time I signed, my upline was in New Hampshire, and I'm in Texas. She was wonderfully motivating, sent me all kinds of samples to use as ideas, and her upline added me to their private website and emailed me, too.
That being said, I still missed out on a lot. They held all sorts of meetings and swaps/shares that would have been so beneficial if they hadn't been so far away.
On the other hand, when I resigned and found a local group to join (we'd moved), I found two demos who had wonderful classes to offer me but had "territorial" issues with each other, which became uncomfortable since I liked both of them and the very different things they offered.
When I decided to sign back up, I researched demos whose businesses I admired. I wanted someone close enough to be of help but far enough away to remove the competition I experienced between my last two demos.
Choosing your upline can be one of the most important things you do. I'm very excited about working with my new one.
Where do you go to check out uplines that you are compatable with. I called my demo the other day and she hasn't called back. I think she is on vacation right now. I really like her but if I have to sign up under someone else to get the best benifits for my money I will. I have already been picking out the stamp sets I want!! I can't wait.
For a local demo, you can go to www.stampinup.com and put your address into the demo locator. You will get one listed, then you can click "more" and get 10 more to choose from. You can also check people's posts here on SCS if you don't mind signing up with someone long distance. It all depends on what level of support you are looking for.
What is the 2 months free of the new website? Is that if you sell online?
No. This refers to a demonstrator's own SU website, which shows potential customers her specials, some projects, current promotion information, and also her scheduled classes, etc. It does not offer a means for selling online, however it does provide your email and/or phone contact information to potential customers who read it. Typically there is a monthly fee ($12.95) for this service through SU. ;)
I think I have convinced myself to sign up as a demo - the package is just too good to pass up. Even my DH agrees! We both know I probably will never hold a class - just a way to save a little $$ since I seem tobe buying it all lately
Once I sign up, does anyone have any idea how long it takes to get processed and get your stuff? Will I be able to place an order in time to get a few "sale A Bration" items or will I miss out since its already 2/9
Any idea how long I have to place my first order? Does my quarter still end in March so I would need to place a $300 order in March or ....
Any suggestions on the Alpha set I should select? I was thinking of getting Best Friends Upper for my "Add On" and then getting Defining Alpha as my "up to $47 freebie" as I am trying to find the most expensive item I can find for free. Which Alpha do you find most useful?

Hmmm .... I could swear that I said the same things a few years ago!

The number of days will vary. Nothing is processed on Saturday or Sunday. But you can now sign up on the demonstrator application through your demonstrator's/to-be-upline's demo website! This is a brand new, efficient way to sign up quickly!

Those who sign up in February, 2008 will have through the end of June, 2008 to complete their first $300 minimum.

Make this decision based on your particular style .. i.e. Card Makers typically get more use from a small to medium sized alpha ... while those who will be Scrapping Demos often get more use from the largest alphabets. Example ... I rarely demonstrate scrapping ... so I generally use the medium-sized or smaller alphas more frequently with my customers. Think of the demonstrator style that will likely become your own. ;)
If I sign up, do I have to agree to be a demonstrator for a certain amount of time??
Nope. You can resign whenever you want and when you resign there is no penalty and the stuff from the starter kit and anything you purchased since then is yours to keep.
However, with the extra 30% off your first workshop size order palced within 45 days of joining and all the other perks, and with having through the end of June to meet your first $300 quarterly minimum, it makes total sense to stick it out at least that long and see if you can make the business work for you.
Where do you go to check out uplines that you are compatable with. I called my demo the other day and she hasn't called back. I think she is on vacation right now. Since the special runs through March 17 and you think your demo is on vacation, I would wait for her to get back so you can speak with her about signing up personally. I know some demos out there do offer special incenitves to sign up with them, and it can be difficult to say no to those special offers, but signing up with another demo can be very hurtful to your current demo. Obviously who you sign with is your choice and you should do what is best for you, but if it were me and one of my customers wanted to sign up with someone else I would appreciate finding that out from her instead of seeing er name on some list some day or finding her on the demosntrator locator or stumbling across one of her advertisements or whatever.
The other thing to remember is that sometimes there are benefits to choosing a certain upline that go beyond "what you get for the money". Some demonstrators offer up-front incentives because, for whatever reason, they need to build their downline numbers, but they may not be the right fit for every recruit and may not offer the kind of support that you may be looking for. Other demonstrators may not offer any up front benefits but they may offer members of their downline frequent incentives based on meeting different goals which may turn out to be far more lucritive than any up-front incentive. For example, my up-up-upline offers members of her downline a steep discount on her stap camp for the first three months after a new demo joins the downline and thereafter continues to offer discounts which go up (up to a free stamp camp) based on each demo's sales and recruiting in the previous month. Since her regular stamp camp price is $20, if a demo earns 12 months of the stamp classes for free that's an annoal value of $240 and a great way to get the latest samples to show your own customers without having to design or prepare them yourself! She also puts on amazing meeting for her downline with cool stmaping projects and brings in great speakers. And she does a lot of sales and recruiting incentives through out the year, like a free stmaping event if you meet certain sales goals in each of the month of a given quarter. Honestly, that kind of support and devotion to a downline is priceless. And even if your local upline cannot offer support on that level, you shoudl ask her what kind of things she would offer her downline and you may find that these are more valuable to you than anyone else's incentives. When you're purchasing the starter kit you are becoming a small business owner, so it makes all the sense in the world to interview your potenital upline to make sure you and she click and that she can offer you whatever it is you are looking for in an upline.
Having said all that, you may also find that your local demosntrator is not really interested in having and supporting a downline. And if that's the case, then she will let you know and may even have some potential uplines she can refer you to.
I hope some of this has been helpful. Good luck in making your decision!
