Google Reader Ending July 1
 

Disaster! Google Reader has made receiving so many blog messages super easy...I will miss it. I know I don't want all those postings cluttering my mailbox, but I have no idea yet what kind of switch I will make.

Ugh. I am in mourning. All my neatly categorized and tagged feeds :(

Me too. If any of you figure out how to deal with this let me know, please.

An article I read offered up three other blog feeders: Findly, Flipboard, and The Old Reader. When I tried to check out Findly, the site was apparently getting too much business and wasn't opening for me. At least Google Reader has given us enough heads up time to check out the possibilities. Still, I'm an old dog and can't stand too much change.

I'm trying out Feedly today and so far it seems OK. Plus I like that they have already addressed the issue that they pull directly from Google reader and already have another alternative in development Here

Also I did notice it running slowly at times, which I suppose isn't unreasonable if folks are running to set up over there and they have to pull feeds for many new folks at once. Hopefully it will settle down once the rush is over.

I was peeved and distressed over this news myself last night. Like others, I don't want a lot of RSS updates cluttering my email. This would especially be a disaster for the Wis Hist Soc image gallery I subscribe to. While they do not upload every day, when they do upload, it can be anywhere from two to two hundred new images at a time. GR made it easy to keep up with those. Will have to check out the other options, but will maybe wait a week or two.

And you know, it's not just the loss of GR grieving me right now. Hotmail is forcing people to migrate to Outlook (which I HATED when we used to use it at work. In fact, we discontinued using it as it had a habit of pulling tons of spam into the inbox--granted they may have resolved that problem, but still don't like it) and are also forcing messanger users to switch to Skype. I have a 6-yr-old computer I cannot afford to replace any time soon. It will not support Skype. My harddrive already has me biting my nails.

Heather have you tried gmail?

Makalah ~ I have a gmail account, but gmail doesn't like my current operating system. Six year old computer, ya know? I swear all of my major electronics are on their last leg, the only question being which one will go first. I keep crossing my fingers they don't all die at once. :-?

Heather- There is an option to switch to plain HTML at Gmail. Google put it in for older computers. I don't know if that will help you any.

I was so upset to see that notice last night. Most of my feeds are from Flickr. I am not a happy Google user right now. ;) I went over to Feedly. It seems nice. I like it's customizable and linear. I did comment on the other thread there is no pink theme, lol. I was logged into Google so I was automatically logged into Feedly. No having to sign in to another service. That was my main upset about losing Google reader. I like simplicity. The only thing I did not like about feedly was I had to use an applet for Firefox. I try to keep my applets down in Firefox. I only use one, DeskCut. It looks like Feedly will be nie for Tablet users because everything can be laid out in magazine form.

I think this week end I am going to try feedly - I do have flipboard on my iphone and ipad, but still would like to read on the laptop too. Hopefully this will give me the motivation to scale down my blogs that I read lol

I wasn't ready to follow the blog URL downloading directions when Google Reader first posted them, but they are not being posted anymore and now I am wondering where on their web site do you go to access them when you are ready to download and transfer to a new blog feeder.

I don't know where the instructions to download subscriptions is in google.

I do know know that feedly will automatically import from your google reader subscriptions. I believe that bloglovin will do so also. I'm sure many of the other options have now or soon will have that ability as well.

I love Bloglovin' and you can import your Google Reader XML file directly to them.
