Toilet paper! Waterproof matches!
At least that's what Dad is always looking for before he goes out to the lease. . .

Deck of cards, hand/foot warmer packs, freeze dried snacks or trail mix... scent stuff, seat cushion (not sure if they'd need that for pheasant hunting or not!!!), snacks/chewing gum, bottled water/canteen...

Good luck!!

I know it sounds odd, but what about one of those "space" blankets. The little silver things that are the size of a deck of cards when folded that when you lay under them they warm you by keeping your body heat under the blanket. I carry two of those in my car at all times.

And what about a deck of cards? Gotta have something to do in the evenings.

crossword puzzle book... travelsize battleship or other "manly" game...

Oh, maybe you want this to be a nice gift and not so much of a "you'll need something to pass the time" joke gift. Well, let's see... you could put in some chocolate - I hear men like it, too. Some anti-bacterial handwipes... an extra pair of socks?... chapstick... I'm guessing it's cold when one goes pheasant hunting??? big plastic garbage bag (can double as rain gear if needed)... this is too hard for me, I have to go back to the silly/smart-alecky stuff...

Some sort of sign to attach to his back - target in a red circle w/ line through it and the words "I may be a turkey but I'm no bird!"

gotta go - I didn't sleep much last night and my stampng friend called to say she couldn't come over this morning so it's nap time for me!

A compass, and directions on how to read it. You would be amazed the amount of people that think they know how to read a compass - the hard part is knowing how to read where you WERE vs. where you are now!! A "how to survive anything" book. A whistle - one of the big, old fashioned metal ones policemen and gym teachers use - in case you get lost. A flashlight. I only know deer hunting, so I don't know if any of these things would pertain to duck hunting. ~Pam

Definately Beef Jerky! The hand and foot warmers are a must. If you have a sporting store nearby, try picking up a rule book on hunting (always nice to have) - the government prints them and they're free and include details on limits, size requirements and season intervals.

I've never hunted pheasants, but mosquito spray might be nice... I don't think birds can smell.

How about a new license holder? My dad's license holders are constantly wearing out. Beef jerky, trail mix ~ disposables/perishables that he would have to buy that he wouldn't have left over from last trip are always good.

Wow, I'm glad I read this thread. My husband doesn't hunt, but he does fish up a storm (although along the lines of Jenn's dad, frequently all he catches is a buzz - gotta fish with beer apparently). I'm going to make one of these for him and his fishing buddy.

I think I'll make a golf one for my dad, too. Wow, my mind is reeling with all of the good ideas.

Thanks,
Carolyn

How about some sharp scissors? I know my DH always wants some for his fishing kit-now he has his own pair f paper snips! LOL

Also the one time use handi-wipes that are anti-bacterial. Some new sunglasses and the sunscreen wipes (they also have ones that are bug repellent and sunscreen combined). I know it sounds funny but if he drives somewhere to go hunting some gift certificates for fast food places on the way there/home.

Some nice warm socks and ziploc bags (freezer ones) just on teh off chance he catches something (haha) or on the strong chance hos socks get wet.

Default survival kit

Ok promoise you will not laugh too hard... my children ( grown men) also hunt in Montana and South Dakota region.. two years ago for them I made....... here it comes.. flannel toilet seat covers in camoflauge colors and animal prints and a bright orange one for the lady who was going along and might have to wash dishes and cook for them.. On the guys I attached stretchy material ( elastic in black) and made bullet holders and a larger one for toilet paper.. ( because well you know the best bucks always are seen when you have your pants down) I filled them with quilt batting.. and I used a real toilet seat cover as the pattern.. hope this helps.. I know one of the guys looked at my sons like... Is your mom in a mental hospital or something? My sons had to explain it was just a joke and that I really did not expect anyone to use them. On the orange one we attached a towel -for dish drying, a place for a dish brush, etc.. hope this helps.. one of my sons has his hanging on a wall in his garage.. and he has a picture of him with one of the elk mounted in the middle.. also need to say .. I do not sew so I paid another women at work to make thiese for me..

On behalf of the citizens of South Dakota, I'd like to thank all of you who come to South Dakota and/or send your family here to hunt. Between hunting season and the Sturgis motorcycle rally, we have NO STATE INCOME TAX!

My husband says a gift certificate to Cabelas (a huge sporting goods store!) is always a welcome gift! Also earplugs and a disposable camera

Just found out this year my aunt will be going pheasant hunting. I'm definitely going to make and send her one of these cans. She lives in PA and their season is October 26-November something. At least that gives me a little time and, luckily, I have the wildfowl set already.

Plus, you also have things like The Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD (at least I think that's where it is), not to mention Mount Rushmore. It's a wonder more people don't want to live there! Oh wait - no, it's not! seeing as the weather is the pits for at least 1/2 of the year: winter is way tooooooo cold and summer is way toooooooo hot! It's probably a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there!

By the way, Washington also has no state income tax.

small flashlight (LED ones last longer), waterproof matches (think someone already said that!), mixed nuts, jelly beans (take little water to digest, last long, long time), hot tea, cocoa mix, coffee mix, instant soups and/or bouillons, small mirror (for reflecting in an emergency situation), sardines and crackers (weird, but my Dad only had these while fishing and camping!), small hatchet, collaspable cup, reflectors to add to clothes, boots, etc.

Sound really fun!

Actually, on average the Seattle area has the same amount of rain per year as Baltimore. As for the volcano, when it erupted in 1980, we didn't get any ash here in Bellevue so it was a case of trauma by association for me - meaning seeing it on the news, hearing from people in other areas and then see the mess and the devastation when I drove down I-5 more than a year later!

If you've never seen the Corn Palace in Mitchell, you have missed a cultural icon!
