Default Copper foil tape question

I have enjoyed seeing the microscope slides and JulieHRR's beautiful votive candle holder with the copper foil tape on it. My question is about the longevity of the copper tape. Another of my hobbies is stained glass, so I have plentyof that tape laying around. After the tape is exposed to air and fingerprints do you ever have issue with it discoloring? I remember that happening from when I wrap my stained glass pieces but the soldering covers that up in those cases. I'd hate to give someone one of these as a gift only to find that it has discolored later.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Hi Laura:

I did the microscope slides a few months ago and have them in my basement. So far, I have not noticed any discoloring. I'd be interested in hearing if others have experienced discoloring or not also.

Default Foil Tape

I ordered a bunch of this stuff from Glass Crafters. I believe they are based out of Florida. If you do an internet search, I'm sure you can come up with their address. They will gladly send you a catalog as well.

By the way, I made these as pins at last years Autumn Stamp Camp, and mine are still holding up great.

I bought a few rolls when I stopped into a Stained Glass Supply store sevearl years ago. But, you can purchase online from www.glasscrafters.com I believe their S & H is better than most out there that specialize in online stained glass supplies? But, compare before you buy as I don't know that for sure! They have a $20 minimum order...

A roll is usually between $6-8 for 1/4" wide. It's a LOT. I bought 1/4" and 1/2" for my different projects.

As for tarnishing, and patina effect, yes, that will occur over time. However, if you want to keep it tarnish proof, lay the strip out on a piece of newsprint, and spray with Krylon Clear. That will prevent air from accessing the surface of the copper and tarnishing.

Julie,
Thank you for posting the website!
And also for the info about spraying it with the acrylic spray!

Okay... I have a question. Does the foil tape have adhesive on one side??? And if not... what do you use to fasten it to dominos or votive holders??? :? Something like tacky glue or mono.... ???
Thanks!

Thanks for the Krylon tip Julie! I knew that'd you'd have the answer! ;)

Keri, it's been quite a while since I've bought copper foil, so I really can't remember how much it costs. I always got mine from stained glass supply stores, but I have seen some at Hobby Lobby.

Sencie, yes, the foil tape does have adhesive on one side. You can buy copper foil that has a black or silver adhesive side. I don't know about using it with stamping, but with stained glass it really helps to have that. They also sell silver foil tape and tapes with scalloped edges if you want a different look.

You can also check out http://www.anythinginstainedglass.com/ for other ideas.

I actually bought my tape at Hobby Lobby. It was a huge roll for about $6.00.

Just an aside. . . be prepared for the yucky I've-been-holding-a-handfull-of-pennies-all-day smell on your hands when you use the copper tape. Blech!
