Stamping on Tiles for coasters

Good Evening Ladies,

I am looking for info on where to buy the tiles used for coasters & the sealer you must put on them. I know you stamp with Staz-on, but how can you color them? Any help is much appreciated! This site is the absolute BEST!!

I have purchased tumble tiles from Lowe's. You receive 9 tiles for about $6. I have found it more desirable to use the craft pads to stamp on the tiles and to color in the images. First, I stamp the image in black and let dry overnight. I have used watercolor brushes to paint the ink on from the lid of the craft pads. (Now I use the Aqua Painter, and I love it!) After I am done coloring, I let them set overnight. It usually does not take it that long to dry, but I feel better about doing them this way I then spray them with Krylon Crystal Clear Acrylic Coating. This provides a permanent, protective gloss coating, and it only takes about 15 to 20 minutes to dry.

I have tried the StazOn a few times before, but when I go to spray with the coating, the ink runs. I have not had this happen with the craft inks. However, I understand that if you are using glazed tile, you do need to use the StazOn.

I use the tumbled marble tile from Lowe's, same price as above. I have never had a problem using Stazon. Pigment inks work well too, if you are in a hurry to dry the tiles--bake 'em for 20 minutes at around 300. I use q-tips to apply/rub the chalk directly to the tile. I don't like shiny finishes so I use Krylon Matte sealant to protect them.

I've been stamping on tiles for about a year now.

I took a class at a local stamp store.
They started us off using Colorbox Chalk inks. They're permanent when heat set.
If you're doing one or two you can use your heat gun to set the ink but if you're doing several you can set the ink in the oven. FYI - my kitchen was kind of smoky when I recently heat set 39 in the oven!

On a few occasions, I've had my inked image be absorbed right into the tile and get a muddy look. If you find that the tile is particularly porous then I'd suggest a quick spray of sealer and then proceed with your stamped image.

You can use chalks to color in an open design or a paintbrush to dab into the chalk inks.

I give the tiles about 3 coats of sealer. I use Krylon matte finish or some other craft spray. If I can get a $5 can of spray with a coupon at my local craft store then I do.
