I post pretty personal info on my blog, and it is a personal preference thing, but recently I've seen posts that indicate:
woman is pregnant with small children in the house and husband will be away for a week
family will be out of the house on vacation for a week
This is an advertisement for a thief or worse to visit your home. Many folks have exchanged addresses with other bloggers or have their address available on the blog for RAKs, shipping, etc.
I'm kind of a worry wart, so I hope this isn't seen as an alarmist kind of warning. I just wince when I see posts like that and suggest that folks think twice about advertising vacations in advance.
I usually talk about where I went when I get back.

Great advice! You never know who's reading your blog...
I agree Joan. I never talk about going away on vacation beforehand, just mention it after I get home.

Thats a good idea. I'll have to remember to hold myself back from saying I'm going on vacation. It's hard because I'm usally really excited about it! ;)
That is a very good point. Thanks for bringing it up. For people that have registered domain names, whois data is readily available to anyone searching.
Great post-- I've thought the same thing myself on blogs and forums. I've held myself back on a few occasions from actually commenting to a person I've seen do this- I didn't want it to look like I was the weirdo who might be stalking them! I'm completely detail-free on my blog-- I'll mention my kids by age/sex, and I list my state.
Another thing I worry about is people who post lots of pictures of their children. Anyone with a photo program can copy and alter the photos of your adorable children and do whatever they want with them. I read a blog once... I wish I remembered where.... where I woman actually found photos of her children that had been copied and altered to appear as though the children were participating in pornographic acts. :
great reminder...I had a huge debate with my DH even on what to have on my SU website and which is linked to my blog - so what is on one is really on both...and I finally have info I feel comfy with out there....
however.....if you see my blog - my great big attack dog who guards the house THINKS he's 20 feet tall - but he only weighs 13 pounds! Anyone have a picture of a gaggle of Rotty's they would love to share? Then I can mention they live in the house too with the lil guy....hehehhehe....I think the pups would more of a deterrent than my alarm system!;-)
Thanks for the reminder Joan. This is a big issue and I have read quite a bit "We are leaving for California/Arizonia etc tomorrow for a week." Even if you do not have your address etc. all they need is your name to find where you are.
If I am going to be gone for awhile I do two things. I either just announce that I will be unable to post for awhile due to a busy schedule or set up a few drafts that I can just post when I am gone. I'm a regular poster and I think just not posting would be just as obvious that something was up.
Off to feed my vicious guard dog ;)

That's what a housesitter for the ferocious man-eating cat in my avi plus a monitored alarm system and neighbors with a REEEEEEEALLY big dog are good for! LOL!
Great thread -- we always talk about teaching kids what is/isn't safe to put online, but it seems that adults don't worry about that so much. It's something to think about on SCS as well, since you don't have to be a registered user to browse the general forum. It scares the bejabbers out of me when I see folks who are looking for stamped images, etc. putting their mailing addresses out there for all to see, complete with first and last names. IMO, that's information that should only be transmitted via PM.
Even on my SU! website, the phone number is my cell -- and there are quite a few folks with my name in this area code! I don't put my home address on my business cards, either, because you never know where those things can end up.
