Default rolled up/worn edges on cardstock

It is all over the SU! catalog this year.....the edging where it is kind of rolled up and worn looking along the edges. How exactly do you do that?

If I understand correctly, I believe you take your fingernail and scratch the edge of the cardstock. hth

If I want a rolled edge, I wet the cardstock first, then start the roll around something thin, like a paintbrush. Then continue to roll.

The fingernail technique I find best on dry cardstock to give it just a little distressing/texture.

Try both techniques and see which you like better!

I was wondering about this too; I like the torn, inked edges that are just slightly curled up & was wondering how to acheive this look. Page 146 & 147 of the new catalog show 3 examples;

Wink worn and curled edges

I use a bone folder and rub it on the corners almost like you would if you were going to curl ribbon. Then gently separate the paper and roll it forward.

I get the aquapainter with just water and just go over for example, a square, draw a square with the aquapainter go over it several times, till is wet that you can just tear the paper and then when you are done, your edges should still be a little wet and easier so roll up and curl them when wet.

I love this look too! I use two different techniques ... depending on the look I'm going for.
1 - Tear the edge of the paper first, and then roll it over w/ the palm of my hand.
2 - Run the edge of scissors back and forth along the side of the paper to distress it. This almost pulls the layers of the paper apart and then I can roll it w/ the palm of my hand.

My friend LisaDRHC (where are you, girl? ) says that fingernails are jewels, not tools! She uses a the bone folder--but of course, I didn't talk to her until after I'd made 40 swaps. Next time!

For this one, I did it a little differently. I cut tiny little lines at different angles almost perpendicular to the edges with my paper snips. I varied the angles and the distance apart a bit. Then I spritzed a little water on a paper towel and dipped the edges of the CS into it. It dampened fairly quickly then I just used my finger tips to roll up the edges. The cuts helped form the curve to the paper.

Ha! she's right--at $25 every two weeks for a fill! I'll have to remember that--another use for my bone folder.

Thanks!

Thank you for asking this question!!! I love this look too and didn't even think of asking here...
I used my fingernail once and even though I don't get my nails done, I will use my "boner" (that's what my demo calls the bone folder!!!) instead!
Thanks for all of your input!

I had 10 squares to do last night and tried the bone folder. I was CASEing the flower card from the Shapes & Shadows IS for thank yous. What a difference! It worked so well and my nails are intact.

Default many ways

I have used my fingernail...but that is sooo drying to me and my poor nail.
I use the bone folder first...this gets it quite nicely. Then if I want to "roll" more, I run my nail across it. You can actually see the separation in the paper fibers this way. I do use my aquapainter to run across the edges to make it more crisp sometimes too..then use the bone folder.
HTH,
Katherine

Default Curled edges

I use a variety of ways too, most have been posted, although not crazy about using water on the paper. I usually curl a piece of torn-edged paper after I glue it to a layer. Don't put the adhesive all the way to the torn edge, leave about 1/8th to 1/4th (or more, depending on the look you want) of an edge unglued. I then roll the remaining edge with my fingertips (not nails) until I get the desired curl. Sometimes I use a sanding block to rough-up the edges or file them down, if that makes sense. I keep doing that for every layer if that is the look I want.

Default card curling

I have been wanting to try this technique also. Love the way it looks on a card. Thanks for all the advice everyone posted here.
