Question How do you start your cards??

I was wondering how you all get started when making a card. What I mean is do you pick out the paper you are going to use and then color in your stamped image....matching the colors to the paper you have picked out

--- OR ---

do you stamp an image and then color it and THEN decide what paper will match up to it.

Is this a totally off the wall question or what  . But when I play with my stamps...a lot of the time I just stamp and then have fun playing around coloring it in. I love stamping the same image several times and coloring it in a few different ways. But then what happens is I spend WAY TOO MUCH time looking through my PILES of WONDERFUL paper trying to find something that goes with it. So I'm thinking I do it all backwards!

So how do you all do it??

Depends. lol. Sometimes I pre-color at appointments etc. Other times if I am sitting at my desk I will pick out the paper first.

First I pick out the stamps I want to use then will pick out the cardstock. I then design the card and don't tape anything down until I'm perfectly happy with the way that it looks. I probably waste a lot of cardstock in my design process but am usually always pleased with the way the card turns out.

i live by the color coach from stampin up!!! I can match colors but this makes me rest assured that these colors work together. So for instance....if i'm doing a boy card and have lots of brillant blue...i find that on my color wheel and do my colors from there and then stamp away. If i'm in a brain fart and can get a layout i like, i look to old catalogs and magazines. Normally i know what stamp set but have difficulty finding what colors and layout, so i choose colors then layout. Hope this was a little helpful.

Usually I pick the colors, then the stamp set, then the layout. I rely heavliy on the SU catalog and SCS for layout ideas. ;)

I use my Color Coach every time I stamp.

I use the sketches ALOT. The design part is what I was always getting stuck on. So I choose a sketch, then I find a stamp set that would work well with the sketch, then I pull the colors! It makes it so much easier! Kerilou

I choose my stamp set, then my paper. I fiddle around with all my elements until I'm happy before I glue anything down. Occasionally, I'll even do a sketch before I get started, but my sketches are always inspired by a specific stamp or set.

I will usually pick my stamp set, then paper and then design the card. If I get stuck I will look through the gallery on SCS and if I have a card in my favorites I like I will usually use the layout and maybe change the colors. I rely a lot on SCS for inspiration and layouts because I can't always seem to come up with my own that I like. I definately don't glue anything down until I am satisfied.

I feel better reading those of you that use SCS and the catalog as inspiration. I do that too to give my brain a little kick start. I usually decide what stamp set I want to use and then pick colors and a layout.

BTW....I feel like such a TOTAL FREAK because it takes me sometimes (most of the time) HOURS to finish a card. I'm thinking it's totally because I'm trying to match paper to my artwork...and if I do what you guys are saying...pick the paper and the layout....THEN go for the colored pencils, markers, or whatever to match. I'm gonna try it that way next time and I'll let you know if I can get a card done in less than 4 hours! LOL Maybe I'll get to bed before 2am  My hubby would like that I think - ha ha ha ha

You're not the only one! Sometimes I still take several hours to make just one card. But that's why I started making mulitples of everything. I spend so much time perfecting the design and color scheme that it seems like a waste to make just one card. So I make at least two, but usually four. When I'm using something that needs to be colored in, I stamp extra so that I can try different colors and toss the duds.

Most of my cards start with a stamp or a color scheme, but I usually make sure to have the main colors chosen before I start coloring my images.
