I've never actually used a positioner for assembling my stamps. Interesting!
I just use it for stamping the images precisely/straight onto my projects . . .
I guess, I figure that even if I got it mounted perfectly straight onto the block, I'd still probably misalign it anyway when stamping because it can be hard to eyeball some things even if they are straight on the block, UKWIM?

Yeah, I just assumed that the stamp positioner thingie in the catalogue was for actual stamping. My demo showed me this trick for putting the sticker on the block in exactly the same postion that the actual stamp is in (did that make sense?) but it's a bit fiddly and I have 11 sets to mount and well, I just wanna STAMP! I'm inclined to go with the "wing it" approach and be sorry about it later ;)
To quote my granny, that sounds like a lot of sugar for a dime! lol
I'm like Julie, even when my stamps are straight as could be, I still stamp them crooked. Enjoy your goodies!!
I never use a positioner to assemble my stamps, either -- although I'm always using it to stamp! If I went to all that trouble, I'd never get any sets mounted!
I have also never used my stamp positioner when mounting my stamps- sounds like WAY too much work. I do, however, use the stamp positioner alot when I'm stamping, especially with 2 step stamping.
I've never used a positioner to mount my stamps, but when I trim the rubber, I leave the excess in one piece. Then I put it back together with the image, remove the paper from the image only, and square it with the wood block. That way my stamp is pretty much square with the block. I know I'm way too **** about mounting my stamps, and it takes longer to do it this way, but that's just the way I am! I won't go into detail about how I get the sticker lined up with the stamp!!!! Too confusing!!!
The Stamp-a-ma-jig comes with two pieces - the uppercase T piece (purple part) and the clear acetate square sheet. First you position your acetate square exactly up against the purple T piece. Then, stamp your image on the acetate sheet (the corner of the stamp should be flush with the T). Next, you take the acetate and position it wherever you'd like to stamp on your card (it's clear so you see through it).
Lastly, you butt your purple T piece to your acetate sheet (that's perfectly positioned where you want to stamp) - delicately take away the acetate and butt your stamp to the purple T (as done in the first step) - VOILA - the stamp is exactly where you want it.
It sounds like a lot of work, but really, it's not. Plus, if you only 1/2 stamp an image or word, it's awesome for re-stamping on top of the image and saving the piece. I think everyone needs one!
I purposly mount my stamps in the bottom left corner of the block. Then I can see the stamp and exactly where it needs to be.
I have never tried a SAMJ, but might have to give it a whirl on of these days.
Stampingmathilda - thanks for the links. I like the idea of using vellum for stamps I know I'm going to use a lot with the SAMJ. And I loved the neat ideas in Debbie's tutorial. TFS!!
I just eyeball it when I put the stamp and the sticker on. I do make sure that they are aligned up as much a possible though. I do check out the best way for the sticker and the stamp to fit on the block before sticking them down.
something my mom (my demo) taught me is that the words are always straight on the stickers (the SU and copyright date that is) so I use that to make sure my stamps are straight on my block. I take my stamps, cut them, take off the backing paper, and very gently lay them on my block. Then I peel off the sticker, and lay it face down on my stamp so that the words SU 2007 (or whatever date) are straight and the sticky part is up, not down on the stamp, then I adjust my stamp based on that. Once I have it in the right place I just press down on the stamp to stick it to the block better (after I take the sticker off and adhere it to the front of my stamp block). Hope this make sense.

I seem to remember a couple of years ago, when Heartfelt Thanks was new, someone mentioning that they used the SAMJ to mount the stamps. I wish I'd tried it because THAT is one set that I have the hardest time getting even close to lining up. I've even pulled the outline part off a couple of times to reposition it...... finally have just gotten to "know" it well enough to make do.
When mounting my stamps, I just eyeball and lightly apply my cut out image to my block, then stamp it on the SU grid paper lining up the left and lower edges of the block with grid lines. If the stamped image, lines up straight, I press the rubber firmly onto the block and apply the label. However, if it's crooked, especially the words, then I just adjust the image and test it again until I'm happy with it.
I don't mind being off with most images, but I HATE crooked words!! :-)
I read the tip on using the SAMJ recently and I tried it on my last couple of sets. I didn't find that it took that much extra time, but I didn't find it all that helpful when I want precise positioning, I still need the SAMJ for that.
I like to center the rubber on the blocks. I tried placing it in a corner but I didn't care for the instability of the stamp. Just personal preference though.
