How do you keep your ribbion organized?
I have mine in a bin and that is not working for me.
Its a mess and very unorganized.
Any ideas, what do you do?
DH built a rectangular wooden box and drilled holes in the ends for a dowel rod -- all the spools hang in the box on the dowel rod. You could do something similar with a carboard box (like a shoebox) and just cut holes for the dowel rod. Let me know if you want to see a picture. It takes up a bit of space, but keeps things organized -- I do not have what I would consider to be a lot of ribbon.

I have heard of putting them in a mesh, laundry type bag and pulling the ribbon through the holes, though I don't do that because I can't see what I need to replace. I have also heard of putting them on a pants hanger with the multi hangers that pull out (as well as the wheels), but I don't know if they would stay put. I just have mine stacked in a shoebox side by side...of course that doesn't work the best either. Good luck[/list]
Until I get something fancier...I recycled the cookies trays that holds bought chocolate chip cookies. I just put my cookies in a cookie jar...wash out the tray and put ribbon spools in it. It has little dividers and holds several rolls.

I have a photo box with punched holes on the side, added some eyelet and the ribbon comes out the side. It holds a lot of ribbon and keeps it from unwinding. I can pull 2-3 colors at the same time without needed extra hands.
I bought one of those boards with all of the holes in it like people use in their shops. then got some of the longest metal thingys that go into it, got a dowel (sp?) and put all of the ribbon that and put that onto the long metal thingys. then all you have to do is pull and the spool of ribbon spins on the dowel. This whole thing gets screwed to a wall. If this doesn't make sense I could get a photo...
my friend bought a curtain rod type thing the kind with a spring in it I beleive it is called a cafe rod anyhow, one to fit a section of her book case, slipped them all on and volia they all hang there very nicely
Someone once told me to a section of gutter nailed to the wall and they rest right in there with the tails sticking out HTH
This is my solution. I came up with it myself. I like it because I can add more dowels as I get more ribbon and it is CHEAP to make. I got everything at the hardware store.
OK - maybe ya'll could give me some ideas for my problem.....I bought yards of each ribbon color from Alicia and now they are a huge mess. I left them in the baggie she sent them in and have tried to roll them back up but there is just a huge mess. I tried rolling them on the little cardboard thingies you use for cross stitch thread and that is just not working. Any ideas would be great!!
My husband installed a plastic rain gutter on the wall in my studio. I think we paid about $2 for it at a local home improvement store. My ribbon spools simply sit in the gutter with the ribbon draped over the edge. When I need a specific color I know exactly where it is and simply pull the ribbon and cut off the amount I need.
I am loving all of these ideas! When I Finally get my studio, wish, wish, I can't wait to use all of the best ideas I find on this site! :lol: :lol: :lol:

Photocropper, how about wrapping it around an empty papertowel roll, or T.P. roll? Just use a small sewing pin, through the beginning of the ribbon, to secure it to the cardboard roll, and wrap it around the roll, securing it with another pin at the end of the yard.
I have a similar set up, but mine's a plastic sort of mesh bin. I have the tails sticking out of it to just pull out what I need, but have outgrown my box....must mean I've ordered too much ribbon. :oops: I got my bin at Organized living for a few $$$.
Don't have a camera available right now, so I've posted the link for the catalog I bought it from. DH had to cut it down - it was too wide for our doors. Works great though! I buy a lot of riboon by the yard at Fabric Barn. I wind it on t.p. cardboard rolls.

Dawn ~ what a great idea!! We have plenty of those around here!! Messes all the time! I will get right on that in all my free time!! LOL We all know there is not any free time that we are not on SCS!!

Have an old Paper towel roll?
Tape the ends and wind them on!
Can you contact your local fabric store and ask if they ahve any "empty" ribbon spools? That would work too.
Normally - mine are on BBQ skewers and rolling around in my stamp. Currently they are in a basket as my Hub wanted to actually COOK using MY skewers! THE NERVE! and i ahve yet to put them back.
I attached gutter sections (from HW store) to my wall and stuck the spools in there. you can get all sorts of neat end caps too, and can paint them any color you like. works lik a charm and is cheap!

Jan, that's very much like the system I came up with. Two great minds, huh? The only difference is, my sweetie used steel rods and we put big washers in between each of the ribbons so that they would not pull on the ribbons next to them when I unwound them. I love this system. It is very flexible. My sweetie hung it from the ceiling in front of some shelves next to my craft table. It swings out of the way when I need to get anything off the shelves.
But I do like the gutter idea... that's very clever!

I loved your organizer rack - I can't tell if you have the grosgrain in there too. Does it fit?

Kristina, I do have some grosgrain ribbon on the rack, but it's not from SU :( so I'm not sure of the size of that spool. But, the shelf will fit spools that are upto 4 3/4 inches wide, if that's any help to you
I just went to Home Depot to buy a rack like Jovi's! I took my SU! grosgrain spool with me, and it fits with room to spare. Here's what the specifics are on the one I bought:
Rubbermaid 18 in W 4 tier door/wall rack - Item # 62418. It was 12.50 at my Home Depot.

I took one of the Stoneware Storage racks from Pampered Chef...the flat wooden base with the holes in it and the dowels that go into the holes. Well, I found that the dowels were too big for the SU ribbon spools so I went to Home Depot and bought a 3/8 inch dowel and then sawed the dowel to four ten-inch lengths. Brought them home and wrapped tape around the base of the dowels so that they would fit the holes of the storage rack base. I have the base sitting on my work table because we have cement walls in the basement where my work space is, so I couldn't attach anything to my walls . It works better than the drawer that I had them in...
I love the ideas and if I had regular walls and/or a door to hang things over, I would use them....In my next life.... :lol:
hmmm all these good ideas and I only have a few spools of ribbon and cording. Guess gonna have to go invest in some soon Need an excuse to order more things
