Does anyone have any suggestions for an alternative to an embossing powder tray? I have just begin to use embossing powder, and do not have a powder tray for the excess powder. Any suggestions for another method would be appreciated. Thanks!

I usually just use a piece of copy paper, folded in half. I use the crease to pour the excess back in.
I do the exact same thing. I actually prefer this method over the tray, because I think the plastic tray is too staticy (and quite a bit of the powder sticks to it)
I keep my embossing powders and glitters in square Gladware type containers. That way I can hold my cardstock right over the container as I sprinkle on the powder and then dump the excess right back into it.

I put all of my powders in large plastic containers - approximately 5 x 7 sized, that way I can put my item to emboss into the powder, shake it off and I have less messes that way.

Yes Shannan, more $$ for stamps or cardstock (I like to purchase both).

I agree the paper is easier. In the winter, everything sticks to my tray even when I use my Embossing Buddy first. I will even run the E.B. over the paper before I start. My Mom uses a plastic bowl/lid and keeps a spoon inside---this works well, too.

This was my method as well before I purchased a powder tray. Okay for the short term and one embossing one or two items at a time, but definately not a convenient as the powder trays.
Another alternative is to buy the disposible Glad brand sandwich containers (like Tupperware, but cheaper) and dump the bottle of embossing powder into the container for both storage and to catch the excess when embossing- I use this for my glitter because I use glitter so often that it is actually easier to use it this way vs the powder trays,

Fold a piece of vellum in half and crease the fold line, dump the excess powder on the vellum, tap the back of the vellum so the powder slides into the fold line, hold the fold line over the EP container or bag, then tap the back of the paper, and the powder will slide easily into the container.
Best way to control static on EP is to place silica packets (from vitamin bottles, shoe boxes, etc) into the storage container or bag. Shoe departments usually will give them to you if asked.
I don't have an embossing tray, and use the scrap paper method if it's just one or two items. When I've got a lot of embossing to do, I dump the powder into a long storage container, stamp the image, dredge image in powder, tap off excess into container lay to the side. I tend to use the heat gun when there are a bunch to heat set or I run out of room on the craft table. When I am finished w/the EP I gathered all in a corner and pour back into the bottle. Never could justify spending more than a $1 for an embossing tray.

Another vote for the coffee filter. I use paper when I'm too lazy to walk to the kitchen but the advantage of the coffee filter is that the ep seldom sticks to it!!! Every speckle goes back to the jar! Love it! (My tray that I bought.. grr.. always leaves more of the glitter or EP behind... waste of money.)
