Black Ink
I'm going shopping for a good Black ink tomorrow and would like to know what you ladies prefer. I have Black Colorbox but I want a seriously strong black...does that make sense to anyone???

What you get depends on what you want to do with it.
My faves are (in order):
Brilliance Graphite Black (for Copics)
Versafine Onyx Black (for Watercoloring & Normal black stuff)
Palette Hybrid Noir (for Prismacolor Pencils & Odorless Mineral Spirits)
Stazon Black (for everything else!)
I have a *few* black inkpads. LOL Hope that helps you!
My all time favorite is Memories Black ink. I've had the same ink pad for 5 years and only reinked it once. It is waterproof and leaves a very crisp image.

I've heard great things about that one too. It's next on my list to get!
The best black ink depends on the paper (or surface you want to stamp on) and the stamp. (No kidding!) Staz-On is designed for non-porous surfaces, dye inks dry quickly, and pigment inks more opaque.
I gave a demonstration one time with six different kinds of paper, eight different types of black ink and one (photo style) stamp. Difference was amazing.

Me too! I use Memories with watercolor and with gamsol.
I vote for Versafine Onxy Black. I really love it! I use it for 99% of my projects. Only use Brilliance if I'm stamping on shrink plastic or a non pourous surface.
Ranger archival Jet Black seems to give a good, dense black on most papers. It's waterproof and it's the one I reach for if I'm going to use Prismas and Gamsol, too.
I only use Archival Ink in Jet Black by Ranger. It works great and the pad is about 4 x 6 inches and opens flat so even the biggest stamps fit. I've had it for over 2 years and have reinked it one time.
OK, this is what we have so far:
Brilliance Graphite Black (for Copics)
Versafine Onyx Black (for Watercoloring & Normal black stuff)
Palette Hybrid Noir (for Prismacolor Pencils & Odorless Mineral Spirits)
Stazon Black (for everything else!)
Memories Black ink
Ranger archival Jet Black (Prismas and Gamsol)
Now lets add what type of stamps to use with these different inks. EG Clear or Rubber
Brilliance Graphite Black (Clear)
Versafine Onyx Black (???)
Palette Hybrid Noir (???)
Stazon Black (???)
Memories Black ink
Ranger archival Jet Black (???)
Brilliance Graphite Black (Clear & Rubber)
Versafine Onyx Black (Clear & Rubber)
Palette Hybrid Noir (Clear & Rubber)
Stazon Black (Rubber - not recommended for clear, but works)
I really like the Versafine - I always get a crisp, strong impression. Definitely stay away from the SU as it has a purpley cast to it.
Hmmm.. . don't go dissin my SU ink ;);)I love my SU Basic Black! It has a purplish cast if you try to pick up ink and watercolor with it but it stamps just great!!! My little BB stamp pad is 12 years old and I have used a half a bottle of reinker on it over the years and it's still going strong. What a deal!
I liked the purplish color so much that I used it as a color (see this) and the black ink it's self for the image.
I have Stazon and Versafine too, which are great, but I still reach for my SU BBlack most of the time!
I've been using an India Ink pad and Memories Black. (I've been using the India Ink more because it's already on the table and the Memories is stashed, somewhere:rolleyes: .) Both clean up very easily and give me a nice impression.
I love and adore my Brilliance Graphite. I've even used it with great success with my Prisma and Gamsol. It does take a while to dry (or you could be impatient like me and heat set it. heh) I have StazOn but I tend not to use it because it is such a mess to clean even with the stamp cleaner and scrubber pad. I have used Versafine, too but I don't find it as deep and rich as the Brilliance.
I prefer Adirondack Pitch Black for gamsol and Copic markers. Stazon for really wet watercoloring. SU! Basic Black for lighter watercolor and with blender pens...YES, there is something that only the SU! ink does well. I tried watercolor pencils & blender pens with Brilliance, Palette Noir and Stazon and they all ran, but SU! Basic Black does not.
I'm with Jan! You gotta have adirondack for copics...it is the best! It dries soooo fast (cuz I'm a little impatient).
I use palette for all my watercoloring.
That's it....just love these two ink pads!
SO anyone got advice for a newbie for buying her first really black ink that will impression well with stamps with a lot of detail...?
I hear Versafine but then there's the Pallette...I'm all confused :(
It really depends what you want to do after inking. If you want to have the option to watercolor or use copics you can use palette. If you are SUPER picky about the black not smearing with copics, go with Adirondack for that.....but you cannot watercolor with adirondack.....so long story short...if you just want to ink an image and be done then palette will work great. It is a nice dark black (not purple) and works well with detail.
I have a lot of Crafty Secrets stamps (very high detail) and use palette a lot (especially when watercoloring).
Make sense, or are you now totally confused......
There is no black ink pad that will do EVERYTHING perfectly, that is why so many of us have more than one.....lol!
Actually I am now more confused then ever because I haven't tried the watercoloring technique or the gamosol for that matter...and I have no copics but I have Prisma's 120 pk of pencils .
Hmmm.so I can't water color with Adirondack...just curious...but why..?
Does anyone know where to get a refill for versafine onyx? I have an old TAC pad that I LOVE but it's retired. I thought when it ran out I might reink it with versafine. Is that a bad idea?

I'm searching for a refill for this (and my Versafine Vintage Sepia too). I'll post back here if/when I find an online retailer to order from. I do love the Versafine for Copics, and for watercoloring and using SU's pencils---and it gives a very clear, detailed image. Love these two pads! (And I do have Staz On, SU's Basic Black, Brilliance Graphite Black...but it's always the Versafine that I reach for first!)

I want to know the same thing, but for heavy watercolor paper. I like to do watercoloring with either markers or reinkers or watercolor crayons, and I cant get crisp black images on the watercolor paper. I have the Memories, Palette, Brilliance and I can't get a strong black image with those. I just got a snowman family stamp and had to stamp it many times before I could get a decent image, and even then it was faded and not very dark in most places.
Try contacting the manufacturer of the inks you want to re-ink to see if they even make a re-inker. In the interest of saving time, why not just purchase a new ink pad? There's not that much difference in cost.
