Exclamation man card!!!???

I need help desperately!!! I have to make a man-card for my dh's birthday! This is ALWAYS the hardest card for me to stamp... I only seem to have girly stamps..flowers, etc... and my mind feels fuzzy when I try to think about it. If you have any suggestions or links please post them here.. Wish we had a man-card category.. I spent an hour looking through the gallery....*roll eyes*! Hard to find a man-card this time of year when most things are pink and red...and all of the cards I think of are in pink and red....aaaarrgh!

man card!!!???-dinner-jacket.jpgI agree a male section in the gallery is a good idea. Babies and little boys are easy. It is more difficult to come up with an idea once they get a bit older, too young for cars/girls etc. Then when we come to adults if they don't fish or play sports the ideas are hard to come up with. I am usually very happy with what I end up making but I haven't any photos. The only one that I have is my dinner jacket card with is made from Bazzill card, in this photo it doesn't have the buttons down the front ( I ran out ).

If you search "masculine" in the gallery you may turn up some, too. It is hard to come up with these, huh?! I've been thinking about buying the "Lovely as a Tree" set for this purpose!!

As a avid sports fan myself, I always tend to do sports themed cards for men.

A couple of months ago, I made this card for my Dad's birthday...

Here is a search for "masculine birthday". Lots of cute ones in this search:

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Here is the one I made for my step-dad:

Motorcycle Birthday by sf9erfan at Splitcoaststampers

Good luck! These are fun to make. I just stick with choc chip, rust, saffron, river rock and other colors in that spectrum.

I've been using Stem Silhouettes this weekend and last and depending upon the colors used, could be used as male birthday card. I used brown, beige and natural cardstock, stem silhouettes stamps, archival mustard and memories sofg wheat inks, and 2 brown brads. Finished the inside of the card w/beige paper and stamped image in soft wheat on left side of card. WBF (wonderful boyfriend and graphic designer thought the card was perfectly okay for a guy.

On page 91 of the new catty is a card using "neutral" colors, river rock, chocolate chip and something else, (very vanilla maybe, I'm going from memory), and even though the stamps are flowers, it looks mannish to me!

I always have a hard time with the man cards too. It recently occurred to me that the trick is more in the colors you choose than the stamps you use. If you look at your stamps and think about them in darker colors (think Earth Elements - browns, greys, etc.) many of them (even some flowers) can come accross as masculine.

Another trick is to make the central image a sentiment rather than a "thing" (like a flower, etc.).

Good luck!

Default my cards

Manly cards are hard. I find that the effort I put into them depends on the guy and/or his wife. Some guys are quick to glance and toss. They get minimal cards. Others are better and appreciating it or have a wife that appreciates them. I do better work for them. Here are some in my gallery.

Man cards are probably the hardest. There are some great samples here. I bought a couple of lighthouses, lovely as a tree, winds of grace so I have somethings to do for guy cards. I also have golf, tractors, train. When you see something on sale think of guy cards.

I just made these for twin guys turning 30:

The Twins Turn 30 by qvande at Splitcoaststampers

This is another one I made for a man using chickens: Chicken Trio Birthday by qvande at Splitcoaststampers

This was for my sil: Mirrored Medallions by qvande at Splitcoaststampers

Using a lighthouse: Silver Lighthouse by qvande at Splitcoaststampers

This one is pretty simple, some dp and a sentiment: Male BD by qvande at Splitcoaststampers

This was the very first masculine bd I made, using shells: Stipple Shell Birthday by qvande at Splitcoaststampers

Good luck coming up with the perfect card for him. I definitely agree that masculine cards are the hardest. I tried to give you some samples that use pretty general images.

According to my dh, if it features flowers or flourishes (no matter what color they're in) or ribbon of any kind . . . it's NOT masculine! (I think that the exception to this would be emmiestamps' lingerie cards.) Eyelets and twine are good embellishments for masculines cards.

My son is in the Air Force and I send him cards all the time.. many with flowers and ribbons on them and I once asked him if it was alright, and he said he just loved getting my cards and that they are always so nice, that I should sell them! I hugged him for saying that.. made me feel good.

You could make masculine cards with anything thing from animals, to shapes, autos.. etc. the color scheme makes a big difference and is why I always choose earthy tones for all guy cards.

"The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him."

--English writer G. K. Chesterton (1874-1936)

Involving the WBF (wonderful boyfriend) in this discussion and he says as long as it's earth tone colors the image doesn't matter. I quote "Honey, men wear earth tones all the time, it's called CAMMO, ask any duck hunter, deer hunter, or any other kind of hunter or any outdoor guy. Leaves are in, like Mossy Oak New Breakup or Advantage Max One." Well honey, what about embellishments, would a ribbon on a card make you a girlie man? His answer, "Honey, all my cammo overalls and cammo pants have cuffed drawstrings, i.e. ribbon." However his embellishments of choice are brads and snaps.

I wish I had a link for you, but I don't. I just made two male cards...I used a square paper punch and made a grid of 9 squares in Chocolate chip colored DP. I arranged the squares on basic black card stock. I added a tag made with tag punches and secured with hemp. It was a hit. Fast and Easy.

I did another man card today. I used all blues with gold EP and a little linen thread. I like how it turned out.

I use the Weathered background stamp and Lovely As A Tree for almost every man card I make! I also do the faux leather technique for men, with Noble Deer as the stamp set used. Hope this helps. Oh, and I love ribbon, but it doesn't really work for men, so I use hemp twine for mens cards. I have also made cards using playing cards for the poker players in my life, and they love them. (I usually lay out a hand on the front that equals their age, and see how long it takes them to figure that out!).

Wow, I have seen his blog before, and I am just amazed at how everything he makes looks! I have never seen a "so-so" card from him. :-) Kurtis, you rock! :-)

I am always on the lookout for more masculine cards. I try to find masculine sets, but it is difficult. Yay for Dad's Day in my next order! :-)
