Question about size of cards??

I am very new here but love this site. I also like how friendly and helpful everyone is here it is great.

I have always been more of a scrapbooker than a stamper but love stamps anyway and own more than my fair share.

since coming here I have really enjoyed looking at everyones cards and decided it is time to "improve my skills".

I am in the process of making Valentine's day cards for our family and have a few questions. I hope I can ask them in a way that will make sense...........

I like a bigger card, like a regular old card you buy at the Hallmark store.
Every time I have been to something SU related they always make the cards that are 2 out of an 8 1/2 by 11 piece of paper. I think that is why I never really got into making cards.

If you make a larger card, how do you start. Do you pick out envelopes and go from there? Do you keep up with the exact measurements and always know exactly how to cut your paper???? I hope this makes sense and someone can answer.

Also, (sorry so long) How do you get your cuts straight????? ARRRGGHHH, that drives me crazy and I have the MM trimmer that is supposed to always cut straight. Well, I was layering paper on my card I was working on tonight and wehn I was finished I realize it is not striaght and I can tell. Any tips for how you get it exact and not look so well-homemade.

I do try to find different sizes of envelopes and keep them on hand, then I make a card slightly smaller than the envelope. I have probably 5 or 6 different size envelopes. Envelopes can also be made, there are templates to help with that. One thing to remember is that square cards always take extra postage.

i learned here on SCS that you can always put the square card in a regular shape envelope and then it will only require regular postage.

I only have a few different sized envelopes, and I do start with their dimensions and work my way down for the card and layers. I have a hard time coming up with bigger cards though... I can do the normal/small cards and the squares, but getting much bigger takes too much creativity for me!

It sounds like you would benefit by hooking up with an SU Demo in your area and attending a 'card night' or whichever format they are currently offering. It's worth going at least a few times to get some tricks and tips and talking to people one-on-one about techniques, tools and everything else that will blossom from there!

Your cards are your personal creations and each one will be special!
