My husband made me a ribbon rack using scrap lumber from a shelving project and wooden dowels. He drilled holes in the sides of the rack for the to slide through. I slide the dowel out a little slip the spool on and then slide the dowel back through into the side I slid it out of. I know this isn't a very good description. If I remember I'll try to take a photo a post it tomorrow.
Gutter! Plastic rain gutter from the home imporvement store. We cut down the length, mounted it to the wall and put on the end caps. It fits my ribbon perfectly and I can remove it and replace it with ease.
ETA: I just loaded pics of my room in my gallery. There is a pic of my gutters.
I saw an idea in a magazine (I think it was CK) about making your own box to store them in. I can't remember the dimensions but the idea was to drill holes (if it's wood) or make holes (if it's cardboard) on two opposing sides and stick dowel rods through the ribbon (you can put several spools on one dowel rod) and stick the dowl rods in the holes. Then you would cut slits in the other two opposing sides and slip the ribbon through so can cut just as much as you want and not have to roll it back up.
I thought it was a great idea and was going to make my own when I got around to it. I don't know how much sense my post makes but I will try to find the page that I saw it on and scan it in.
I went to Walmart in the laundry section and bought one of the those metal pant hangers. They have like 4 "rods" on them. Really easy to store and never have to take them off when you need some. Just pull some out and cut. Easy-peasy.

OK, so call me cheap, but I've started using those little pint plastic mesh holders you get berries in at the store. They hold 5 or 6 or more spools. You can thread the ribbons through the holes to the outside if you want. FREE FREE FREE
I bought curtain hangers. They are the kind that you spin to make it longer. The little plastic end caps pop off and you slide your spools on. The thing that I like best about this, is that the spools fit snug, so I don't have to worry about them unrolling on. The curtain rods are really cheap and extend pretty far.
OK, so call me cheap, but I've started using those little pint plastic mesh holders you get berries in at the store.

For those that have one near ther, Archivers is offering a class this month on making a ribbon box. I can't remember the cost off hand, but remember thinking it was reasonable for the end product.
I made a ribbon cradle using yardsticks. I saw it on HGTV. To see it go to HGTV and type in "ribbon cradle" and then go to the Carol Duval show #CDS-754. It wasn't too hard to make and it cost very little.

The class is $20. I just registered to take it at the Mall of America Scrapfest in September. For now my ribbon is a cluttered mess on my shelf.
I took a shoebox and using a craft knife cut small square holes in the sides and threaded my ribbon through it and it works great -The ribbon does not fall through back into the box like the one I bought at Target.
StampinMelis, The class you're talking about @ Archiver's is $20, which I think is pricey, even for one of the ribbon storage boxes, let alone if you need more than one, as I do.
I've been using the ones Target sold some time ago...I have 2 of them filled & a 3rd one about half filled. I also run more than 1 ribbon thru each slot. I paid around $4.99 each for them.
I have a couple hooks on my peg board that I twisted and wrapped a wire hanger around. The spools go on the hanger. It doesn't look pretty, but it works!
I bought one of those Sterlite shoeboxes and drilled holls at each end for the dowel rod. Then I drilled holes through the top and threaded the ribbon through. The only problem is that the dowel is too small and the ribbon doesn't stay taunt on the spool so it sometimes gets tangled with it's neighbor inside the box. Not perfect but the box was $.99 and the dowel was about $1 so for $2 it works fine.

I use a plastic box that folds together and snaps, it is flat when you buy it at Target, it has slits in the side that the ribbon can be pulled through. It costs like 5.95 and keeps many spools of ribbon in it. It is in their gift wrap section, it is in with the gift organizers I think.
Basically, something like this... only I didn't use the wooden dowel in the middle... just let the ribbons sit in the box and thread them through the front-side of the box. Works very well, easy stacking.
I am looking forward to making a ribbon box like that someday. For now, all of my SU! ribbons are stuffed in a CM accessory bag and all of my non-SU! ribbons and stuff is stuffed in one of the photo boxes from M's. I can't let the ends dangle out because my dd's CAT would destroy it all if he could get hold of one tiny thread. I love my cat, but that other little monster is a destructive little so-and-so.
My upline had a gable box that she keeps her hemp twine in, with the hemp threaded through eyelets along the sides. I wanted to do the same sort of thing with my hemp and my ribbons and stuff, but it will have to wait until Mr. Playful settles down.
I got a ribbon rack on ebay. I also got her adjustable shelves and I store punches on it. She doesn't have any for sale currently, but they do them all the time. Great product, looks great, hung easily, and affordable. I have quite a bit of ribbon and there is still lots of room. I'll link a pic from my gallery. Unfortunately she takes the pics off her auction....
I like the berry basket idea! I bought cheap plastic boxes at Meijer that look like baby laundry baskets. You can fit quite a bit of ribbon in themand pull the end out one of the holes. Works great for me right now.

I do something similar. Instead of the gutter, I use the wire mesh gutter "guards" I attched them to the wall with screws & can bend them to the size of the ribbon spools.
I bought gutters to use for my ribbon......... but they are too small to hold all my SU! grograin.(I need something that will hold ALL my ribbons AND be easy to remove the entire spool of ribbon if I need it for a make-n-take).......... does yours hold that size????
You all are probably going to laugh, but I store them in one of those photo storage boxes that micheals sells for $1.50! Works perfect for me since I have so many spools of ribbon!

Yes, because I can bend it, it will hold either size (grosgrain or organdy) SU ribbon.

The plastic gutter that I bought at Lowes fit the organdy rolls and the grograin perfectly. It must come in different sizes. The metal at lowes was a little smaller, but they only had one size of plastic. I love the guttering. I am not sure who I heard it from first but it is one of my favorite organizational tips. I hate having to take several rolls off to get to the one I need and this makes it so easy to see whats there and just grab what I need and I like that it is attached to the wall and so it frees up shelf space for me. The ribbon box is really cool though,so pretty.
Barb: You wouldn't by chance have a picture of yours would you? I'm a 'visual' person! LOL
Belinda: I bought a plastic gutter at Home Depot - they only had one size and my dh told me that there is only one size to his knowledge........ the SU! grosgrain doesn't come close to fitting..... I was sooo disappointed as this would have been the PERFECT solution for me!

I found a suggestion here (can't remember who) and tried it and I love it! I bought a Sterlite square basket, medium sized, I think and it has holes in the side. I turned it with the bottom against the wall, screwed it into the wall in the four corners. Then I took a dowel rod that fits the holes, cut it to fit and slid my ribbon on the dowel. I keep the dowel in place with a binder clip on either end. I have the grosgrain on top and the organdy on bottom and there's room for one more rod. Easy to roll off and easy to add rolls. I use a straight pin to keep the ribbon in place on the roll. It also helps keep dust off because the side of the box hangs over the ribbon. Hope that makes sense!

I bought these hanging racks at IKEA to hold all of my stuff. I'll upload a picture for you.The only thing is, the SU grosgrain is to big of a spool to fit in nicely, but you could always trim the spool down a bit with your scissors. (I just came up with that idea, guess I
ll have to go and take my own advice. LOL

I don't understand. I just turn mine sideways. No, it doesn't drape over the side, then, but because of my kitties I wouldn't want it to, anyway.
I want it to hang off (no kitties here! :0) ).......... I'd like it to all go one way and hang off the ends so that I can cut a length off it I am just using a piece or two but I want to be able to easily 'grab' the whole spool if I need to take it to use at a workshop. The Craft Locker is perfect but it won't hold ALL the SU! ribbon at one time................ my dh said he could build me some wooden boxes (and I may go that route) but I think I'll check into Barb's gutter guards. I have some wall space to use - so I need something that will 'hang'.

I'm a bad "ribbon mommy" I guess ... mine is just all in Sterlite Shoe Boxes... all jumbled up in a colorful but happy mess! I tried the pants hanger but it was such a pain when I needed to take a whole spool off for a class so slowly but surely they all wound up in the boxes - I have three of them and need more! I have a bad ribbon addiction! All my other supplies are so neatly organized (honest)!!!
For a while I used old wipe containers. However, the grosgrain does not fit in there. So...I trimmed them down, but then they didn't turn nicely. The wipe containers worked well because although I could not see what how much was left, I could pull it through the lid so the ribbon was left protected. As a mom of 7, we always have empty wipe containers so it was virtually free and a very good solution until grosgrain.
I currently have mine on 2 dowels that my son set up for me and I love it, but I can't move it and it is exposed so it doesn't solve the "clutter free" look I'm after.
I plan to go to the decorative box idea like the picture noted earlier. Then the ribbons will be completely accessible at a moment's notice, but nicely out of sight and yet still portable when necessary during stamp camps.
I love the gutter idea....that works very well for books too. But,....it seems like dust, light and clutter appearance may still be an issue?
Such dilemmas about storing out stuff!!!! Any suggestions for punches? I would like them to be accessible and portable to take cropping, but they can get heavy. Any ideas?
I just got the idea off someone on the general stamptalk board, Use those round clothespins and wrap the ribbons around them. Hardly takes up any room at all. It does take me time to wrap all the ribbons on the clothespins but it should be worth it in the end.

I went to the hardware store and bought dowels and plastic coated chain. I hung two chains from the ceiling, then it was easy enough to insert dowels in the links to put the ribbon on. The best thing is it is totally expandable and CHEAP!
Edited to say I've really gotten a lot more ribbon since I made the rack, LOL!

I hadn't thought about the dust, light issue. Mine are in a closet, the clutter issue wouldn't have worked for me other wise, the light isn't an issue cause it is in the closet, but now that you mention the dust, I think I will put a plastic curtain over them. I did this with my husbands baseball cap collection(also in a closet)to keep the dust off. Just a little flap of clear plastic attached just above the top rack. (I use the wrap you bring from the cleaners and cut off the writing!)
I did put a cloth curtain over my paper sorter. Looks prettier and keeps my paper from fading and getting dusty. That WAS an issue.
I haven't come up with anything clever for punches either, just pack and unpack them each time and it is a pain. Do share if you have a clever idea on those!
I wrap my ribbon on chipboard pieces that are like 2.5 inched wide and at least 6 inches tall. THen I can sort them by color families, gingham etc, and it stores flat in my acccessories tackle box from Joanns. Also then I don't have to haul all 25yrds of grograin with me every time i go crop at a friends house. Works for me.
