A while ago I stopped mounting most of my stamps on wood and now I use a CTMH Acrylic block I got from a friend. For my workshops I only stamp with wood mounted stamps of course, but I think it would be nice if SU did away with wood and sold Acrylic blocks, or did both somehow. Does anyone else agree or am I missing something about the whole wood thing that everyone else likes?
I love having all of my stamps unmounted now. Over Christmas I brought seven sets with me and they fit so nicely in my Junior Crop In Style bag along with my Making Memories precision cutter, all of the Palette ink spots, paper and mini scor-it board. I also brought a few sets with me to Mexico last March and they took up virtually no space at all in my suitcase.

I would love it if they would offer the option. I like wood mounted for my background stamps but I prefer acrylic for everything else. An option certainly would be nice.
I voted for wood- simply b/c that's what i have the most of..I did order a few acrylic sets from CTMH- and I like the storage options- and i LOVE the acrylics for letters!! SO much easier than trying to line up the wood ones!
BUT- I had a hard time using markers on the acrylix...It didn't give me a uniform stamp/color...
any tips on that?? I use markers alot on my wood/rubber stamps-with no problems..

You have to look at it from both sides. As a demonstrator, I would need multiple stamp sets and TONS of acrylic blocks in order to teach classes and workshops. Otherwise, everyone would be spending too much time mounting and unmounting stamps in order to share them.
From a customer viewpoint, I can see the storage issues & etc. - but I just hate losing clear stamps and I seem to drop everything (LOL).
Fortunately, SU offers the stamps UNMOUNTED so you can do what you want with them.

This is a poll just about the preference of the type of mount, right? Wood or acrylic? I guess that's how I read it and answered. I don't think I have a preference of clear or rubber for stamps, I like both as long as they are a good quality.

I have used clear blocks before...and it does get a little tiresome constantly changing the stamp every time you need a new one. And when I used acrylic blocks...it was at a party...and it was a little annoying to have the stamp I needed, but then I couldn't use it b/c the block wasn't available.

And I'll buy rubber over clear any day. The only time I buy clear is if I REALLY REALLY want the image and it does not come in rubber.
Wow, this is a tough question; there are pros and cons to both wood and acrylic, both rubber and clear. I think I will refrain from answering this because I honestly can't decide.

I still have trouble with the acrylic mounts. I must be clumsy or something. I only have a few alphabets, but I lose them, can't clean them correctly, etc. I can't tell you how many times I have almost washed a letter down the drain. Partly because I prefer to use craft ink with my scrapbooks and it is harder to get off the stamps! I prefer wood mounts, but really like the storage capabilities of acrylics.

I sort of stopped mounting my SU stamps when I got Tsukineko's Tack'N Peel. You put the Tac'N Peel on the acrylic block not on the stamp so I just cut the SU stamps out, but do not touch the foam or wax paper backing. The Tack'N Peel will hold onto the wax paper just fine (even for multiple stampings) and does not pull the wax paper off when you remove the stamp from the bock (if you do it slowly), so if you then decide you really want to mount that stamp on wood, you still can! The foam and it's adhesive is still all there safe and sound on the stamp! I have some stamps that I have used many many times this way and if I want I can still mount them on a wood block - so I get the best of both worlds!
I keep changing my mind so I didn't vote. I loved wood mounted. Then I had a brief, unsavory love affair with clear, totally abandoning my wood stamps.
Then I lost some of my clear, had a hard time organizing them and cleaning them, and slunk back to my wood mounted begging forgiveness.
Then, I started sneaking back to my clear.
I'm a two timer bigamist!!

I'm old school and love my wood mounted stamps, I don't care that they take up space, can't see through, and are more expensive. I get a better image impression and can plan my project better seeing the image on the block, it drives me nuts not having that with my unmounteds. I want my wood blocks and will pay more for them ;)

I love that I pick them up and they are ready to go, and I love that I can *scrub* the heck out of them to clean them off.
I do like acrylics, (and their price!!!!) and am *trying* to love them in case the day comes when there is no more wood....however, I still prefer wood!!
I prefer rubber for the better image I get. I can accept um rubber for its space-saving properties. I do purchase a few lines in acrylic because I love the images so much. So I guess that makes me wishy washy?
Still, it seemed like your question really was whether Stampin Up should go um or acrylic, so I voted wood. They have a huge customer base for their wood-mounted stamp line, so it seems like they are satisfying a very big niche in the rubber stamping market. Nothin' wrong with that, lol!
I like both, but I am limited in space now. Although SU does offer the unmounted. I simply just peel the foam off and add the creative cling (ezmount) and use acyclic block to do the stamping. I do like clear rubber stamp, but I've tried coloring with marker and for some reason it just doesn't stick very well as the red rubber does.
So I like both and my plan is to keep the current stamps on wood until they "retire" then I'll transfer them over to the clear blocks for my own personal use.

I love the wood mounted stamps ( hate the space used) I love red rubber unmounted stamps just as much as th mounted ones.
However I know that was NOT your question.
I am afraid I will rip my ( cheaper you knwo dollar stamps!) acrylics sometimes taking them off the plastic they stick to for storage but I love the images and the price . ;}
I use them all, love them all. I only wish I weren't so fearful of the acrylics ripping and tearing.
I have not yet but I have read of those who have.
I love CTMH acrylics, I think they are quality. Plus they beat SU! in designs such as coming out with them first almost everytime I see an idea swiped
(IMHO anyway!)
I love GINAK Designs RED RUBBER unmounted, WAY!! excellent quality. So I am a three timing cheat or a girl who likes a good time right? ;0

Why Breed or Buy & Let Rescue Dogs Die?
I really love and use my rubber wood-mounted stamps more than any of the clear or rubber acrylic mounted stamps I have. I just prefer rubber although I own clear stamps too. I like that I can use any inks on rubber -- clear stamps not so much. Using clear blocks gets old . . . I like just have my stamps permanently mounted.
by the way, www.impression-obsession.com offers customers the option. they have clear sets. Single images can be purchased wood mounted, on cling foam, or just plain rubber. And, their images are fabulous! Now that is great customer service!

It's funny, but, I even prefer bamboo knitting needles; all my knitting friends like metal. But, I'm a wood girl.

WHY I LIKE WOOD....
stamps are mounted permanantly - no adjusting needed over time
stamps won't slip from thier block when you go to use them
easy to grab and go - you don't have to figure out where you put the stamp - grab a block - get the stamp adjusted just so...
stamps don't rip or stick to cling that you store them on
easy to find the image you need/want/desire because most wood block come with image stickers
easy not to loose smaller stamps
most vaccuums will accidently suck up an UM stamp you have dropped on the floor and didn't realize to late and so it gets sucked up into the vaccuum and then you spend 20 minutes pawing through vacuum debris to find it (maybe this is just me though?) - at least with a wood block attached it is much harder for this to happen
easy to scrub clean without the image popping off of the block
Now...the whole debate of rubber WM vs UM vs polymer stamps has been hashed out many times before...if you are asking specifically about SU they sell their stamps as wood mounted rubber stamps - but hey if you don't want to mount them that is your perogitive....when you compare SU stamps to other COMPARIABLE rubber stamps the cost is usually better PER stamp then many many many other companies. Honestly offering sets without wood block WOULD NOT significantly lower the prices...WHY...because unlike many other SMALLER companies that sell UM rubber SU has a much larger overhead...it is a vast difference between starting your business with just yourself selling stamps from your garage and starting out UM...vs building a business that provides good jobs and benefits to lots of people...

i voted for acrylic i sell close to my heart and absolutely love the ease of lining every thing up. now thats not to say that i dont like the wood mounted also. i have a huge SU order ready to place. but i do prefer acrylic any day
My vote is for wood as well for all of the many good reasons already given. I'm not "lazy" lizard for nothing. I am lazy and it's too much trouble to mount and remount stamps. I love the quickness and readiness of that rubber on wood!!!

Wood mounted for me. I tried acrylic -- really tried -- and about 40% of the time I could get an image I could actually use after the 3rd or 4th stamping try. Flipped so much cardstock and still had waste. Finally ended up selling all of the acrylic meaning I lost money between the initial investment plus the wasted cardstock.

I didn't vote because I love both for different reasons. I wish that either the big wood blocks were transparent, or that acrylic blocks were thicker. I love that I can see where I'm putting the stamp exactly, but my fat fingers can't get a good grip on the acrylics. :(
Oh, and as far as the part about if SU should either switch to acrylic or offer both, if they switch my demo will be very unhappy at the loss of sales from me.
I UMed my SU sets last month and store them in CD cases and I love it! No more crooked images! I guess I just have to be able to see exactly where I'm stampin.
I don't really like the few acrylic sets I have. The images just aren't as crisp and clear. So--SU can keep doing what they're doing and I'll keep buying and mounting on EZ mount.
