I do, almost always actually, even if it is tone-on-tone. I think my fave way is to use a sponge tip, although if I'm in a hurry, I usually just put the ink pad right to the card. HTH!

I use the makeup sponges - the little triangle ones - in a pinch I will use the ink pad itself but I like the sponge better because it kind of molds itself around the edge.
On some layers I do like to ink the edges, but use a sponge that I have rubbed over an ink pad... I love the Stampin' UP! sponges and cut them into four pieces.

Ahh yes. I have to ink my edges, as mentioned I use the ink pad and run the cs along it. Or use a make up sponge. In fact, I may have to start a support group called Inkers Anonymous...my name is cardmaker and I am an inker...
I only make a few cards or scrapbook pages without inking the edges. The easiest way I've found to do this is with the cat's eye fluid chalk inks. They run smoothly over the edges and the colors are beautiful. Using a regular ink pad, like SU!, results in the ink pad getting frayed over time.
One of the things I read in someone's gallery (Sure wish I had noted who, so I could thank her!) is to always, somehow, Define The Edges of the layers. This can be with inking, tearing, decorative scissors, embossing, etc. This little tidbit has helped me a lot with having finished-looking cards.
I do sometimes, if the mood strikes me. The fastest way for me is to take a crumpled paper towel, dab it on the ink pad, and rub it on the edges. I put the piece I'm edging on a scrap and have most of the paper towel actually going over the scrap so that just a hint of color goes onto the card piece. Then if I want more I can rub harder or go further onto the piece, like if I want more color in the corners.
I do it frequently especially with lighter papers or when I don't want to add another layer, but it needs a separation. I usually use an inkpad or a marker if I want A lot of control. I used a black marker in this card I uploaded today to define each layer.
Sponging the edges is one of the first thing I taught new stampers as a demo and tearing, of course. I personally don't do it that much anymore. I guess it takes too much time getting the sponge out and using it! lol. I'll have to remember to do it more.

I do the same. I put each sponge into a mini ziplock bag and, using a Sharpie, I write the colour of ink used for that sponge on the bag. I don't have a sponge for absolutely every colour; eg., I use the same sponge for mellow moss, old olive, always artichoke. I keep all the mini bags in one large ziplock bag so I can see which one I need at a glance.
At last year's StampScrap convention I bought a little box that holds maybe 36 daubers. I use the SU daubers and label each one with the SU color when I use it the first time. It stays right on my stamping table and is so handy.
I like just gliding the edge over ink pads that are the soft foam style like Colorbox.
Haven't seen anyone mention using a Krylon pen with a ruler for a gilt edge - almost looks like a faux layer, and gold at that. If you tape pennies to the ruler so it sticks up, you can avoid that ink drizzle thing from accumulated ink on the ruler...
I generally use the ink pad on the cardstock. I actually bought the stampin' spots just for inking! I got to a lot of crops and can take my spots rather than all of my full-sized ink pads with me. I love them!

Thanks for the tip re: the taped pennies. I'll need to try that!
If I was a clean look I'll glide my paper across my ink pad- if I want a more vintage feel I'll use a sponge. (round SU! cut in quarters)
I've used my one Krylon pen, the gold one, so much that it has a 'v' in the center of the nib! I just hold up the cardstock, and run the nib right on the edge, and it gives me about a 1/16" edge on the front of the cardstock and covers the edge at the same time. I've used it with a ruler, too--but I'll have to remember the pennies tip!
I haven't sponged the edges much--seems like I can't get it to look right to my eye. I probably need more practice!
