Good morning! I currently live in Little Rock, AR. However, DH is retiring from the Air Force in May and is trying to get on with Union Pacific in Omaha. He has an application turned in and a friend who works for U.P. that is willing to help. So, our plan is to move to the Omaha area. (I think at one time DH said he wants to move to the Iowa side.) I hope to find work in IT once we get there.
Does anyone have any ideas, suggestions, information you can offer up? I would like to know more about the area. How is the landscape, is it as flat as I am imagining? Are there a lot of trees? We are outdoorsy type people, especially the boys. How are the schools up there?
Thanks for any help!

It is good to hear from you! Unfortunately I do not know much about council bluffs area of omaha. I am more West of that. We are as flat as you imagine. THe CB side (iowa) is not as clean as the west side of Omaha . Alot of outlieing areas of omaha in Nebraska I live in Fremont 30 miles from Omaha. http://www.fremontne.com/ A nice Town and not a long drive. Some say taxes are better in Iowa but I do not think it is so much that it matters. My Husband Knows omaha/Council Bluffs a bit more than I and he said he would answer any Questions you have. One thing I know about CB is that with all the casinos the town has gone more to the commercial side than the family side.

I am married, 9 years, we have two boys Dallas(5) and Denver(2). I love stampin up! TAC, housemouse. I have done some scrapbooking but not a whole lot and nothing like you see on the internet. Some day I hope to get more into scrapbooking. I try to create 2 ATC's a month to trade with my pals!

I've heard the same about the taxes in Iowa, but the mention of casinos sort of turns me off for that area. I much prefer to be in a family-oriented community. Right now we live outside of Jacksonville, AR, with few neighbors around. We do like the peace (besides the 130s flying overhead!) and privacy, but I want the boys to live in a small neighborhood with other kids to play with. Also, when we lived on base in Alaska, I actually enjoyed it better than I had expected because I made friends with most of the other moms on the street and enjoyed having them close by. The down side was having neighbors close by! Not nearly as much privacy as we have now!
Since we are AF we may want to be near Offut. Can you tell me about that area? I know that sometimes towns around an AF or Army base are not the greatest neighborhoods. What area would you recommend?

Omaha is NOT flat it's one hill after another. That is a big misconception that allot of people have about this area of the country, as well as that we all have chickens in our front yard, and that is also not true. Yes the west side of Omaha (if you have school age kids) would be to your benefit. Freemont is a nice town. Freemont IS flat and depending on the country road that you take to get to Freemont from Omaha there is a house that I know of that sometimes you can see their chicken in their front yard. I have Lived In Omaha, Bellevue, OFFUTT (on base) Valley, Millard (which is Omaha but when I was growing up it was it's own town but was annexed by Omaha many yrs ago) I was born and raised in Omaha, I went to school in Dist. 66 (when you move here you will hear about the schools you will hear about the different schools, Omaha public, Dist. 66, Millard Public) I married and moved away for 20 yrs with the military, I have been back for 18, that should give you some idea of my age, When I went to school Dist 66 was THE place to go, dr's, lawyers, all the rich kids lived there. now it's pretty spread out, West O, west Omaha (Millard, Elkhorn (both have been annexed by Omaha) There are allot of companies here that you shouldn't have a problem getting a job in IT, the job market isn't to bad, better than allot of the other areas in the country.

Sending you a pm....

I'd love to join you guys too. I live on the Iowa side, work in Omaha. (Right across the street from the Union Pacific Headquarters.) I work for the federal government also in IT.

Anyway, I'd love to meet up with you guys to stamp. I've been stamping for years.

Too bad I didn't see this yesterday as I guess I missed today's get together darn it.

You are right Omaha does have lots and lots of hills. But have you ever been to Colorado, Arkansas, Utah, California? These states have bigger steeper and more hills you can't even call hills they are huge. I always thought nebraska was very hilly but then about 6 years ago my husband and I drove out to Las Vegas and we soon realized that Omaha was flat comparitively speaking. But yes Omaha has hills that get really ugly in the winter.
You made alot of good points about Omaha. That is why I tried to stuck to talking about Fremont more so then Omaha and Council Bluffs. You can find bad and good in all areas in all parts of the world.

It is getting scarey to live just about any where any more these days. We had an abonded car left running on our street the other day. We called the police to come check it out after watching the car run for two hours. Turns out the car was stolen and left for someone to find. Now we live on a dead end street, not alot of traffic. So any thing can be scarey. We looked into buying a house in Elkhorn two years ago, but I work for a dentist that I really love so I would have driven back and forth, so we bought house here in Fremont.
We had just had a second child at the time and we wanted to raise our children in a smaller community. I would recommend Papillion area Ralston, Millard, Elkhorn, If I was to move again that is where I would look first. But I grew up in a small town of 2,000 people, so Fremont is big to me. Omaha is great for the job market, won't have a problem finding a job. Schools I have heard alot of good about Millard, but I worked at Great Clips on West Dodge street for 7 years. So I saw alot of kids come in that attended Millard school. I love that area, which is growing and getting bigger all the time. But it is a good distance from Offutt. 20 min drive if I had to guess. I don't get there too often.

I meant no disrespect in any way for my earlier comment about Omaha! I almost moved there and if I could go back I would move there right now. However, I just bought my house 2 years now and I am not ready to part with it yet.

I don't know much about the Offut area. My husbands grandfather was in the navy and his grandmother lives here in Fremont and goes up to the PX for her groceries almost weekly. Omaha is a populated place and growing, it is going to be hard to find a place with few neighbors. Let me ask my husband what he says about the Offut area and I'll get back to you. I personally like the Elkhorn area and Papillion area. I used to work at a salon in west omaha and I heard alot of good stuff about the Millard schools. But that was the area I was in. It sounds like dhayes1 lives in Omaha with your situation she may know more about answering your questions then I can.

Have a great night and have sweet stamping dreams!

I have lived all over as few places, Denver, I had a view of the Rocky Mountains out of my living room window, St Louis (that's where the husband’s family is from and neither of us ever wants to live there again!!) The panhandle of Fl. and that's like living in lower Alabama--got tired of being called a Yankee to my face. California, 5mi from Disneyland (we used to go there when we didn't have the money to do anything else you could at that time just pay to enter the park so we'd just go and walk the park and people watch--and that was a blast!!!) and then an second time about 30mi so of L.A, to crowded and WAY to expensive. I lived in a couple places on the East coast nice people, to humid. Most of the places I have been have Mountains to go through to get there, I don't like Mountains the older I get the less I like the thoughts of driving in them. Now the western part of Nebraska is FLAT that’s after you get past Lincoln or York, but then you’re getting into allot of farm and ranch country also not much to look at out there either. It is pretty boring. But if you’ve ever driven across the state of Kansas on I70 now that’s boring.

I agree it's getting pretty scary to live just about anywhere anymore. I remember when we did live in the panhandle of Fl we didn't even take the keys out of the car when we went to the mall, just stuck them in the console of the car, and there were times when we'd come home and we'd realize that we had left the house with out thinking and left the front door standing open, this was only17yrs ago so it's not like I'm talking 50yrs ago. I would so love to be able to live like that again, But then again there are many times that I still leave the front door unlocked when I go some place and I know the guy across the street from me leaves his unlocked too. Oh and I've been burglarized, when I lived in Denver I lived on the 3rd floor they scaled the outside of the brick building to come in my window when I was on vacation. If they want something bad enough they'll get it, no place is 100% safe.
But back for Janice, there are several lakes, for fishing and boating, there is Lake Zorinsky that people walk and bike around, there is Fontenell Forrest, a nice Zoo, allot of people go to the Old Market, I'm not a big fan any more. There is the Qwest Center and the Civic Auditorium that has concerts, sporting events, boat shows, home shows, etc. we have the CWS (College World Series) and there is such a huge amount of people that come in for that every year it's just crazy in that part of town, people rent out their front yards for parking spaces and they make good money!!! There are festivals; there is a free concert in "Memorial park" just before the 4th of July every year. the more open you are the more you'll have to do--but that's the same as it would be anywhere, I can think of a ton of things that I could have done in all the places I've lived, but did I do it then, no! Back then it probably wasn't cool or maybe it would have been more than what the budget could handle. You really wouldn't want to live near the base, like allot of military towns they tend to look old and run down, that's the way Bellevue is ---- Oh they have grown and the newer parts are nicer but like military towns when you work in the military town you have to compete with the retired person, and the pay is not the best in the military towns.
I hope your not scared off now-----------Debbie

Debbie, your posts are very informative and, no, you haven't scared me off! ;) We lived near Fayettevill, NC, and that city has some pretty scary places! There was even a street that no one in their right mind would go down even in daylight.
I'm not worried about whether or not the area is flat. I was just curious as to if the rumors were true. I grew up in north east Indiana and talk about flat! Since then we've lived in NC between the mountains and the coast, Interior Alaska (our favorite state by far!), and now central Arkansas, which is also a beautiful place. I believe that how you like a place is what you make it. Since we are hoping to go to Omaha I'm sure we will like it there, especially after hearing about all the great areas to choose from!

We are getting together again in March the 15th I think? At 1:00. It is the Saturday before Easter weekend! If any one wants to join us pm me for the address and let me know so we know how many sets of paper to have ready! We are going to be working on an ATC. The Hostess of the month usually prepares a card or ATC for us to make and has all the supplies for us to make them. Then after wards we chat share ideas and stamp images. We only play for a few hours, last month we were done by 5. But that doesn't mean you can't stay longer or leave early. We play it by ear!
I have two little boys at home and Dad gets a little antsy when I leave him at home for too long. they are 5 and 2. LMK

What time is your party? You live in Fremont, right? If I can get babysitting arranged, I would love to come to your party. If I am invited, that is. lol

I am not exactly sure yet, however I am thinking about 1 or 2 in the afternoon! It is on saturday May 10th that I know for sure. Of course you are invited! That is if you want to come and can get a baby sitter. How old are your kids? How many? I have a 5yr and 2yr both boys!

Has anyone heard of the stamp convention in Lincoln? HIf so have you heard of when they are coming this year, or have I all ready missed it?

I went to one many years ago and and I'd love to go again and trade ATC's and get some good buys! LMK
