Default those target mailboxes - the flag

So I've seen several different blogs where people are removing the flag to alter the $1 spot mailboxes. I happen to be really lazy and think that is just waaay too much work, lol! Anyway, I used the 1/2 inch circle punch and then snipped a slit in from the edge and it fit around the flag perfectly and it is hardly visible afterwards.

I hope that helps somebody! I have pics and tutorial if need the visual:

AWESOME Tutorial Emily!!!

I *had* to jump on the mailbox bandwagon this year (thanks a LOT, all you enablers!!!) and have 15 of them sitting downstairs just waiting to be altered and filled.

I've been avoiding them cuz I didn't want to have to figure out all the measurements, etc. Thanks a million for saving me from re-inventing the wheel!!!

Emily, thanks so much for your tutorial. I bought a few mailboxes a while ago and didn't know quite how to begin to alter them. You've made my day!!

Yeah, that's what I do, too! If I sat down and spent all that time to remove the flag, I'd never get the darn thing decorated. LOL!

I actually found those boxes (finally) at the Target an hour from me this season. But, they don't have hinged lids, and that bummed me, so I didn't get any. I really like the hinged lids . . . Geeze, I am picky!

They make them with hinged lids??? Ah, dang! I just figured that they *all* came with the slide-on/off fronts.

Now I'm going to have jealousy issues... ;)

Thanks so much for the tutorial, Emily! I bought 4 red ones LAST year that I still haven't decorated yet (they DO have hinged lids, I notice now that Julie mentioned it!) Now, I have no excuse since you have done all the prep work for me! I did pick up a couple white and pink ones at Target this year, and I am surprised they don't have the hinged lids. They are still cute, though! Thanks again for the tutorial, terrific job!

What a great tutorial! I just bought 6 of these for the first time this weekend and then went and bought 6 more today! I missed out on them last year and can't wait to do some this year.

They do this year. Last year they had hinged lids. I like these better as some of the hinged ones got funky and wouldn't stay closed, wouldn't close right, etc.

Thank you so much for your tutorial! I found some of the white mailboxes this weekend and after reading your tutorial when I got home, I had to alter one right away! I just finished it and am going to try and upload a photo! (My first time adding something to my gallery!)

There are photos of my finished mailbox on my blog though.

Again, thank you so much Emily for your great tutorial! It made it SO much easier having all the directions & measurements laid out for me!

Emily, thanks so much. I bought 3 white ones on Sunday. The remaining were kind of messed up. I was excited to work on them although I was not sure how I would begin. I knew I would have to THINK a lot to figure it out. Now I can just follow your tutorial. What would we do without you? Thanks again.

Default It's all your fault

Just kidding - I had resisted the temptation to go out and buy those cute little mailboxes because I'm too impatient to try and figure out what sizes to cut the paper and how to do it.

With your tutorial, it's so easy - I went out today at lunchtime and bought 6.

BTW, for those in the Nashville, TN area, the Target in Hermitage had about 20 when I was there today.

My problem isn't the flags, it's that darn lid. I can't for the life of me cut a decent piece of paper to cover the lid.

Thanks for the tutorial ... I'll give your lid suggestion a try!

I finished four of these mailboxes yesterday! I ended up making a template for the lid, I kept cutting one piece of CS until I was satisfied, then copied it with plain white CS. Then I used the white CS to cut all the rest of the end pieces with, worked great for me! Thanks again, Emily!

Default question

Has anyone used Mod Podge to adhere the paper? Just wondering if the same technique used on some of the lunch boxes would work for the mail box as well.
Thanks!

I haven't, but, I'm sure you could. I just find MP to be very messy, so I avoid it whenever possible. ;) Spray adhesive would also work, but, I'm sensitive to the fumes . . . so, I usually use Xyron, or strategically placed strips of red liner tape.

Ditto what Julie said - I pretty much only use it on stuff I want to go over with mod podge as well. I did do one that way last year - I think. It was not that cute, lol!

I've lost count of how many mailboxes I've purchased!! The first one I tried using Modge Podge and didn't really like the way it came out plus if I put the paper in the wrong place, I was screwed!! Love using the double sided tape!! It looks much prettier!!

okay ladies so what do you do when you have a wonderful DH that is trying to be sweet so he picks up some mailboxes for you but does not realize that the mail boxes come with the a snap on lid because eveyone of the ones in the bin did not have lids on them? I love him he is always trying to be helpful so what do I do with all these mailboxes (6) when the 2 nearest target stores are all out and both stores are an hour away. My 12 yr old DS says mom you're creative make a lid and giggles I haven't told DH that they were suppose to have lids I just don't have the heart.=) ~~~bluegirl~~

What a sweetheart! Sounds like something my DH would have done too. Since they're so lightweight, I would make a faux lid for the back out of heavy cs. If you alter it, maybe the back and cover can match! I wouldn't worry too much about the front though, especially if you 'overstuff' it on purpose with goodies. ;) If not, call Target and see if they had any extra lids. I bought 9 of them, and had to dig through the pile to find backs and fronts.
