I hate trimming stamps - it's the one thing I dislike about SU! But I love their designs so I do it. I used to have a demo that would trim and mount for me but we had a falling out. I've been reading about people using a Hot Knife to trim around EZ Mount --- and am wondering if this would work to trim out just the SU stamps down before mounting. I'd try it but I'm too scared I might ruin a stamp. And if it doesnt work then I'd be bummed I bought the Hot Knife. TIA for any thoughts and advice you can give.
I'm with you on the "hate trimming" thing. I have not tried the hot knife yet, but I did get one about a month ago. I plan on ordering EZ mount this month, and then I'll give it a try. I'd like to see if anyone who has used it has any tips. I am also nervous about ruining a stamp. I have to say I'm loving that the sets from the minis come trimmed. Maybe eventually SU will have all their stamps die cut.
People are using the hot knife to trim the ez mount but not the rubber. So basically taking an unmounted stamp and adding foam. If you use scissors they get all gunked up with the glue from the ez mount that is why you use the hot knife, quick no gunk on scissors.
You have to trim the SU ones with scissors. If you don't have Kia scissors you really need some. They are available at your lss or SU. They cut rubber like butter - also no curved trimming, just straight cuts.
I'm sorry you hate trimming them. I have no advice to offer... I actually LOVE trimming stamps. I mount all of mine, 5 friends, and have 3 co-workers who bring them to me. I'm guaranteed to watch TV if I'm trimming sets. Just one cut takes the stress away... (Did I mention that I get to use any stamps I trim?? Cool trade in my book!)

I have the Kia scissors, but I also have the 'Tonic Studio' scissors, by Tim Holtz that are much better than the Kia, plus they are cheaper. What makes these scissors better, IMO, is that the blade is longer and narrower. Which means you can get a closer cut.

Really, I love trimming stamps and when I was a demo, would do it often while the ladies of my hostess club sat to stamp and chat. They never asked me to do it, nor did they expect it. I'd see one of them with a set or two they were trimming and casually grab them and trim them up for them.
I'm afraid of the hot knife, I think it would "stink"....lol
I am not a great fan of trimming my stamps (I dont have any SU! ones) but I found that since I bought Tim Holtz tonic studios scissors its not as bad as you get a great cut and it goes into corners. I like my stamps to be trimmed close as well so it adds to the adrenalin kick!:-D

I hate it so much that I've given up SU all together. I've decided that I will only get Clear Stamps from now on. Frankly, I have so many stamps already that I shouldn't ever buy any stamps~ so that kinda works for me anyway.
I have and use the hot knife and I can also tell you that you can't cut through the rubber with it, just the ezmount.
For what it's worth, SU! has announced that all mini catalog sets will be die-cut, so you could just stick to those.
If you do a search on the demo locator at www.stampinup.com, you could contact the other demos in your area and tell them that you're looking for a demo who offers that service. Some do it for .50 per block or so, some (insane) demos do it for free.

I thought I saw that too, that was a contributing factor to me buying my hotknife. I definitely tried to cut the rubber with it, and it definitely does not work.
The hotknife cuts through ezmount beautifully, but doesn't even nick the rubber.
I dredded cutting my stamps till I finally broke down and bought the SU rubber scissors and I cannot believe the difference. I don't mind it at all now. BUY THE SCISSORS if you haven't already!!!!! I only wish I would have done it years ago!
I have used the Hot Knife to cut through very tight places where my scissors couldn't get close enough(i.e. in between two jutting out points). You just have to cut through the rubber verrrrrrrrrrry slowly.
I just started back stamping about 7 mos ago and after trimming the first 2 sets with regular scissors I bought the SU kias - if I hadn't I probably would have stopped buying SU sets because the regular scissors and me were doing a butcher job on my precious rubbah...once I got the rubber scissors I went back and corrected the first few sets so that I could stamp something worth looking at...I still have "inky edge problems" but have decided that's just life in my untalented world...
All great posts. Saw the new catalog - look on page 6. See that flower stamp - now that's a nice trimmed stamp. Can ya'll seriously get your stamps trimmed like that??? Maybe there needs to be a tutorial on trimming --- apparently it's not as easy as "just cut around it" ;)
It is really quite easy to trim like that if you have the SU sissors. I believe they just suggest that you don't cut rounded....that you snip straight cuts. But it is really easy to get in to get those little cuts with the SU sissors (and I'm not a demonstrator, just a happy customer!!)
I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but I use Un-do after trimming my SU stamps. I just put a few drops on a cotton ball and then swipe over my scissor (Kai) blades, and they are as good as new and "ungunked".
Un-do is get for ungunking scissors. Thats the only thing I seem to use it for.
Where do you find this stuff? I found a trick that I read somewhere with my rubber scissors that works pretty well. Using a dryer sheet and wiping the blades clean! Crazy eh? But it works! But, I am curious about the Un-do....Craft Warehouse, Michaels?

We have a Craft Warehouse here, but I've never seen Un-du there. I bought mine over a year ago at a Walmart in Texas. Like the OP said, I really only use it for my scissors, so a bottle lasts forever. You might try Joann.com or another online store. HTH.
I am one of the ones who loves trimming stamps... I find it extremely relaxing and satisfying. Having good scissors (SU are my favorite, but I have Tim Holtz also) makes ALL the difference...
I can't believe people would not buy a stamp just because they had to spend a few minutes trimming it!

Im with you, the best thing about SU and TAC is that I get to cut them out. I love doing it, not only is it relaxing, but I get to look over the stamps and plot on how I will use them once I get them trimmed. I love using my Tim scissors, but when I put things on EZ mount I break out my hot knife and trim them. Its really easy. I saw a tutorial on how to do it on You Tube.
