Default My ribbon is going to waste....

I love the look of having ribbon on a card, but I have absolutely NO idea how to use it! How do you guys make it look so easy? I try to make a pretty bow and have to settle for something much less :p . Can some of you please help a girl out and give me some pointers? I would really like to use all of this ribbon that is just gathering dust!

I don't make very good bows, and stopped trying along time ago. I use knots. If I want the ribbon on the whole lenght of the card, with a knot in it, I take the piece of ribbon, and tie the ends in a knot, pull it tight but don't pull it down. This is what gets adhered to the front of the card. Then, I make a cut in the loops where I want to tape to the back of my card. It'd eaisier to show then to type it. And I don't have the ability to make a "tutorial" since I'm at work, sorry!

I was going to say exactly the same! Forget bows, go for knots. You can also do ribbon "flags" by folding the ribbon in two and leaving the ends poking out. Hmmm, bad explanation. Okay, shameless plug coming: The top five cards on my blog (link in siggy) use ribbon in different ways:

The top one (beer glass) uses a simple strip of ribbon
The next one down (martini) uses a small loop (my favourite way to use ribbon scraps)
The next two tree cards are the same card so both use knots
And the oak tree one below uses ribbon as a flag.

Sorry about that shameless plug but it was quicker than going through my favourites!

Ribbon. I *Love* to use it on my cards.

Sometimes I take ribbon and knot it on both ends and then glue it onto the card.

and sometimes. I just wrap it around a piece of cardstock & Dp for another layer.

If you want you can look at my gallery and see just how I've used Ribbon on my cards.

Jeanstamping2's Gallery

Try looking at some of the cards in the gallery for ideas on how to use it.

Here is a link for you: Ribbon Ideas for Cards

You can also wrap ribbon around the card it's self and then just tie it.

I love to do a long strip of ribbon on my card and then tie three small knots in a row on it. Looks really cute. You can also do a punch on the side of your main matted image and tie a couple different ribbon colors in knots. Looks really cute.

Wink Ribbon

I would say just keep trying and looking for different idea's. I think ribbon adds so much to a card.

I use ribbon in different ways too! You don't have to make a bow. But when I do make a bow I use an idea I got from here, I hope I can explain it as well as the person I got it from did.

When you first cross the ribbon and pull it tight, form the first loop from the piece that is visually at the bottom. Then I wrap the top piece counter-clockwise and pull it through. Usually needs some adjusting, but this way the loops are at the top and the tails on the bottom like they are supposed to be.

Another bow idea is to take a scrap piece of ribbon, form a circle and squish it in the middle, then adhere that way. Take a smaller scrap piece and wrap it around the middle, squished part, and adhere. Then you can adhere the whole thing on ribbon that is already wrapped around the card. This is a bow with no tails. Here is an example of this idea:
Shimmery Ornaments by thecardpixie at Splitcoaststampers

I also love knots and ribbon slides/buckles!

Ha! Me too. I've had my demo show me abot 5 times and I get it....um for about 5 minutes and then I lose it. I am so bow disabled it's pathetic.

I have also seen wonderful cards made with tying knots... I can dig that!

I can't tie a bow to save my life so I just tie a knot and if I need it to look fancy I add a second coordinating ribbon to the knot.

Bows are hard unless you have tiny fingers! I love to use ribbon. I too use knots. There are so many good suggestions here. Thanks for the question and all the great responses. Now I have to try some new things!

One other way to tie a bow is the rabbit ear method - the way some kids learn to tie a shoe. I make two loops close together on the ribbon (I don't cut until I'm completely done in case I get too much or too little the first time through). Then I tie a knot with the two loops - wrap one around the other and bring it through. Pictures would be a lot better, sorry. Maybe someone else can explain it better.

Two things to try: turn the project upside-down before you tie, because sometimes that's all it takes to make bows look right -- and use self-closing craft tweezers to hold the knot while you manipulate the loops. Good luck - it does take practice!

If I'm tying a bow it comes out MUCH better upside down!

A lot of times, I just put a strip of ribbon across the card without a bow OR a knot! :o

You are my new ribbon hero! I love the way you used ribbon in the first link, it looks like a bow but seems so much easier. Thank you!

1st of all dont let your poor ribbon go to waste, send it all to me!! LOL

Ribbon is my favorite accessory.
I dont do anything fancy with it and never use bows, they just arent me, you know? I just lay it over whatever piece of cardstock or paper I want it on and adhere the ends on the underside of the cardstock with glue dots and then take a smaller piece of ribbon and tie the knot where I want it.

Here are a few different ways I use it:
Figgy Hanna by jpmayo at Splitcoaststampers

JPM ~ SEP07VSNO by jpmayo at Splitcoaststampers

IC65 Monkey Joy by jpmayo at Splitcoaststampers

Hope this helps

This is what I do to make bows as well. The loops just need a bit of pulling tight or loosening to get them even. This is how I did the bow on this card: Hedgehog Thank You Spring Card by saffivort at Splitcoaststampers

I've also used it by wrapping it round the corners of an image to give it a bit of an accent like on this card: SC150 Penguin Snow Angel by saffivort at Splitcoaststampers

I also use it a lot to cover joins between different papers and/or cardstock if I'm only using paper on half a card like on this one: WT133 Anyone for pudding? by saffivort at Splitcoaststampers

I use ribbon all the time and have been really addicted to just collecting it - not always using it up though - some of it is too nice to use!!

Enjoy however you choose to use it!
