also known as odorless mineral spirits, used with prismacolor pencils and stumps to color in images...type paper you use is important too. There are tutorials on this site as well on the web on how to use this technique...I don't know how to link them. Hope this helps.

Like someone posted, Gamsol is a brand of this artist's blending medium called odourless mineral spirits (OMS). I did a search in the Techniques forum and found several topics: click! There's also a tutorial here on SCS in the resources section- click!

And I have found that paper makes all the difference! I use that white Domtar cardstock and it works MUCH better than my watercolour paper!

I hope this helps!

I don't know about Domtar paper, but I use Whisper White SU cardstock, which you can order from any SU demo. It works really quite well - it has a bit of a coating on it, so that one is able to blend the colour quite well on the cardstock. You will also need very good pencil crayons, like prisma colour brand. The ordinary pencil crayons have too much wax and not enough pigment to work. It takes a bit of practice, and definitiely I have found that the Creative Mark stumps or the made in Taiwan stumps are much superior to the made in China stumps for blending. Do read the tutorials here on SCS!!

Good luck!

Georgia Pacific cardstock from Walmart or Sams works well too.

avonlea.......I went to both my local Michaels and AC Moore stores this afternoon but couldn't find Gamsol. You say that's the brand name and that the stuff is odorless mineral spirits. I did see bottles that said odorless mineral spirits. I guess I could have purchased that instead?

Yes, you can purchase bottles that say odorless mineral spirits. They are the same thing.

I get it at Staples. People also like Georgia Pacific's cardstock and SU's Whisper White.

I bought my OMS at the artists' supply store in town.

Debbie Gimbels tutorial is really great.

If you are looking for OMS at Michaels it is in the art supply aisle and is called Mona Lisa. White container about 5 inches high and 4 inches wide with a picture of Mona on the front. My M's has it about knee high.

If you want the Gamsol named product, you can get it through DickBlick.com or at local stores that cater to artists (as opposed to craft stores). In the Pacific NW Art Media carries it.

I just read the following link with Gina K.'s video showing how to do this technique. I thought it was very helpful.

I'm traveling and couldn't take my gamsol on the plane. I went to michael's last night and got something called Grumbacher Pre-tested Odorless thinner. I don't know if it's the exact same thing but it's working just fine for me so far!

I have read about this technique, and thanks to Gina's video, now understand how to do this. So while enjoying some time off work and the 50% off M coupon I purchased some odorless mineral spirits and tried this technique. Absolutely love it-it will really make a difference in my cards. I also have had these Prismacolor pencils sitting in my craft room since last summer when I bought them at garage sale-they were a good deal at $1-but only have 12 colors-thinking I will need more. But they have now at least been sharpened and used. I practice on 8 images today-more to follow. I can see how you get better with practice. My ten year old daughter really loves this as well.

Thanks to all those who share their creativity and knowledge-sure helps people like me which are new to this and not so creative.

I'll be doing another stump share sometime in Jan/Feb. If you are interested, let me know and I'll put you on my notification list. These will be the Creative Mark stumps.
