Ok...got a peak at the new one. I'm a little confused...if the sets that are still active are available from the Fall/Winter, why put them in the Spring/Summer catalog? Why waste the paper? My impression was that it would be different from the Fall/Winter...that part disappointed me a bit. Not being a demo, I probably wasn't able to read the "fine print"!
I know, Scrooge is in the building!! ;)

The mini catalogs and preview brochures contain only new merchandise - perhaps that is what confused you. The Fall and Spring collections show everything (except the Dormant List) that is currently available.
I like the idea that everything is still in the catty. The dormant list is the only thing I don't like. Out of sight, out of my mind!
2 catties are ... in my opinion... a waste. I LOVED having one... not worring about a dormant list and all of that baloney... oh well... I am still a SU addict... just my opinion...
The 'dormant list' baffles me. That's not a hard thing to do to me... ;O)
I have printed it and will slip it in my new catty.....hopefully I'll remember what it's for.
What is it for?
I got a peek at my demo's catalogue and found a lot of things I like...one question: will any wonderful person be updating the DP list to reflect the colors of the new papers? I have found that SO helpful and use it before I order anything new!
I like the 2 catty system, to be honest after about 6 months I had bought everything I wanted anyway and was antsy for new stuff anyway.
And even with the same stuff in both catties they showcased it differently each time, so I'm finding that I'm looking at stuff that I didn't even notice in the last catty.
I also got a sneak peak at the new catty and I feel the same way as Nancy, the OP. I expected to see lots of new sets, not just a few sprinkled in with the same stuff from the Fall/Winter. Have to say I was disappointed. They could have just made a supplement catalog with the new sets....what a waste of paper. I feel sorry for the demos that have to fork out cash for all these extra catties.........I think there's less incentive for a customer to buy one when the sets are mostly the same.
I don't like the idea of two catalogs and two retirement lists at all! It would have been much better if they'd gone with a supplement in January.
I'm in the fortunate position of being able to buy whatever I want, but so many have to budget their stamping purchases, and having two retirement lists makes it costly for both demonstrators and customers.
There were quite a few brand-new sets that were retired.....that's really tough on demonstrators who can't use the sets after just six months!
I didn't care for too much in the first catalog, so I didn't feel pressured to buy anything that was retiring, but there were a lot of people who loved so many sets! Will they over-spend trying to get sets that are on the retiring list, or will they just have to be disappointed if they can't afford to buy the sets they wanted?
It's kind of soured me on SU!s sales practices.

As someone mentioned on another thread, the goal of a company is to MAKE MONEY, and SU is just making use of the cultural trend of "gotta have the NEW thing, gotta get the old thing before it's GONE" to make more money. I too feel it's a waste of paper and harder on the demonstrators, but the bottom line IS profit... SU does so much else right, that I'm not letting this practice bother me too much, but I do wish things would just slow down in the stamping market so I can take a breath and USE WHAT I ALREADY HAVE!

TAC demo #2239
1. SU has realized that it is hard on demos if sets retire after 6 months. Shelli promised at her last teleconference that all new sets (starting with this catalog) will be current for at least one year.
2. The new catalog has sets from the previous catalog so that we demos do not have to carry 2 catalogs with us all the time. There is a great selection for all seasons, and still many new sets. The old Fall/Winter catalog is not current. Only the new catalog plus the dormant list (containing mostly Fall and Winter sets) are considered currrent.
I hope that clarifies a few things. I am excited about the opportunities that 2 catalogs a year brings!
Stampin' Up! is no different than any company out there- who wants to stay in business and provide what customers want. I love the new catalog system- I also love that many of the sets from the Fall/Winter catalog made it into the Spring/Summer catalog- more new samples- and many of the sets I didn't even notice before but now I am taking notice.
The competition is fierce in this industry and to stay on top you have to provide more choices and trendier choices for customers. I have watched 2 LSS close their doors recently and it is because they couldn't afford to keep bringing in new stuff and compete with the internet stores. I certainly don't want that to happen to my business.
I have an ever changing inventory with not a lot of investment. Does it cost me more per year with 2 catalogs? Probably but I also have the potential to make more money. How I choose to spend the money I make is my decision not Stampin' Up!'s They don't tell me I have to purchase all the new great products they offer- but many times I choose too.;)
I know some people think it is terrible that demonstrators and Stampin' Up! are making money but- that is how it works. I provide a service to my customers and they pay me so I will continue to provide them with what they want. This same senario plays out across the world- it is every where- golfing, fishing, skiing, eating, clothing, etc.
I expected to see lots of new sets, not just a few sprinkled in with the same stuff from the Fall/Winter.
By my count, there are 101 NEW stamp sets and wheels in the Spring Collection - not just a few LOL! And I'm glad I didn't have to wait until July to see them!

101 NEW ones! Wow! I'm getting in touch with my demo NOW! I'd been OK with waiting till after Christmas to get catalog excitement, but I feel it coming on right now!
IMO, I like having two catalogs. By the time the year was over I was so bored of the catalog and so many things & trends change. I think that this is a great way for SU to stay "in the loop". I realize there are positives and negatives and I'm sure there are glitches to be worked out. Sometimes it takes a little time and patience. Way to go SU!
I love having two catalogs! Two reveals each year, plus 2 minis and SAB means more fun and anticipation. Not to mention, more designer paper choices! Oh man, wait till you see Berry Bliss dp! Think Neapolitan ice cream! Mmmm! And Sale-a-bration isn't until February, so, for people like me, we get time to pay off our Christmas bills in January, then have some money to play with again in February!
I actually like the two catalogs. I get to see more samples of the older stuff and lots of new stuff to drool over. It was the two retirement lists I wasn't happy about, especially since December isn't easy on the budget anyway. I'm glad to hear that will change.
for a new customer that didn't see the fall catalog, you'd want the old sets in the new catalog
other companies do the same thing, so SU is no different

But there were some brand new sets that retired, City of David, Heart Flutters, Double Line Doodles, just to name a few. Or does this policy start with the January catalog?
