cleaning scissors

I'm not sure if I am posting in the right forum or not. But, I was wondering how do you clean the sticky stuff off your scissors? I have a certain pair that I use for tacky tape, 3-D dots, any kind of adhesive. Well, now there is so much sticky stuff on there that I can barely use it for that. I hate to buy a new pair, so was wondering if there was a way to clean them without making them dull.

Rubbing alcohol...works great, no residue.

I use Un-du. The great thing about this product is that you can use it to remove stickers or layers on your cards and as soon as it dries you can reposition them (the adheasive dries and works again!). I've used all three of the suggestions at some point, but rubbing alcohol is my favorite because it's the cheapest and, as mentioned, leaves no residue.

I have Purell sitting around everywhere. I use it on EVERYTHING including my scissors. I even use it for a pre-treat when I have ink on my shirts.

I keep a small bottle of Goo-Gone near my workstation, just for this purpose. I just dip the blades in, then wipe with a paper towel. It smells good, too!

BTW you can reduce the amount of buildup by wiping the blades across your VersaMark pad before cutting something gooey...

I used to work in a shoe store long, long ago. What we used to remove price tag adhesive (and what I still use to de-goo my sissors) is all-protector. You know, that all purpose shoe water-proofer! Works like a charm, just spray a bit on the blades (till it pools) and wipe clean with a paper towel.

VersaMark or any embossing ink will keep the goo from building up in the first place. I learned about this from the vendor who sold me the Halos mounting system. Even though I have cut through sticky Velcro and EZ Mount, I have not had any problem with build up on my Kai scissors. I do sharpen them as needed.

I used the hand sanitizer yesterday to clean my scissors and moved on to my acrylic blocks. Worked spectacularly for both. My blocks look like new!

It's probably the alcohol in the hand sanitizer that does the trick..... and I can always find alcohol in our medicine closet. I lose everything else.... lol

Use alcohol to clean your acrylic blocks? hhhmmm, was wondering how to clean those too. What about the acrylic stamps? Do you just use soap & water. Oh, and on the cleaning what about the cleaning pad for stamps? Can you wash that with anything?

I just use baby wipes... carry a small travel size in my supplies... I just checked, they are the natural ones, no alcohol... I use them to clean stamps when my cleaning pad is (missing...lol)

I always use good old cheap rubbing alcohol to clean my scissors. My CM sales person turned me on to this long ago and it still works like magic. The main problem for me is remembering where I laid my scissors last! I treated myself to 4 new pair for Christmas!

I have also found baby wipes to be pretty effective. I always have some in my stamp area to preclean my stamps whenever I am using craft/pigment ink to keep my Stampin Scrub from getting all gummed up.

I tried alcohol but it took forever to get the glue off from the EZ Mount Thin. I use nail polish remover with acetone, it works in seconds. I'm going to try the Versamark suggestion in hopes that I don't get as much build up on my scissors.

I use Stewart's Ultra Clean stamp cleaner. Just a spritz and wipe with a paper towel and the are good to go!! It works great!!!!

I used WD 40 last time I cleaned them...but rubbing alcohol sounds like a good idea - and I will try it on my acrylic block - it looks awful. Thanks for this thread.

Purell is a brand name of hand sanitizer. Generic hand sanitizer works just as well.

I'm glad you like it. I use it for almost everything at my stamping table. I even use it when I put a sticky in the wrong spot and then move it. Of course I don't get the sticky too wet. I also use it on my 10 y/o and my 6 y/o when they "help" me.

Do you clean the scissor blades afterwards or just leave it as it is? Do you have to wipe blades with the versamark pad everytime before you cut?

I was going to ask the same thing lilian! Thanks for all the advice. I will try each way and see which I like better. Since I have little ones, I know I have baby wipes. I don't have any rubbing alcohol.

You just wipe the stamp before you use the craft ink? I am assuming you let it dry before you get the ink on it? Can you use that before you apply stayzon?

I have towelettes of UNDU type stuff in my drawer...Individually wrapped ones...I love them for cleaning scissors, acrylic blocks and everything else....I use them to clean the keeping part of tombow adhesive applicators(the blue part) and it removes all the lumps and bumps that build up because of tape splits......I had to resort to the towelettes because DH keeps "borrowing" my bottles of UNDU or Goo-gone.

The hand sanitizer is nice because it stays on the cleaning rag. Pure alcohol evaporates so quickly it seems I was constantly adding more. The HS is less messy, too. No spills. Thank you soooooooo much for your suggestion!!! Who knows what else I'll use it for!

I use baby wipes to clean my scissors too. I generally use ultra clean or SU cleaner with the scrub pad to clean stamps but sometimes I use the baby wipes for that too (they need to be alcohol and scent free).

I use KI Scissor Cleaner and Lubricant. A little goes a very long way! One little bottle will last a lifetime.

I also use goo-gone.. I have the spray bottle with the thicker "more-gel-like" formula... It stays on the blades alot better... and make a much smaller mess.

I didn't know they made goo gone in anything but the "runny" type. I've never saw the spray type. I'll have to look around. I had a hard enough time finding the "runny" type.
I've always used the baby wipes on the scissor blades. It always works fast. I'll have to use some of these other methods. Thanks for sharing, everyone!
