Default FYI about glue runners holding your items

I spoke with a woman yesterday who works at a scrapbook company. They hold a lot of contests where you make a card and send it in to them for judging. She told me that many of the cards that have been put together with a glue runner/tape have gotten to the company falling apart. Of course some glue runners are better than others but be warned that some of the glue does not hold well. She said the thicker the paper, embellishments, etc. the more they fell apart.

I believe it. I use herma tabs and have had problems every now and then with LOs submitted for display in our LSS. So, this begs the question...what's the best runner? There's one from Japan I want to try, but have to order online so haven't done it yet. I love my Trio, but it's not as user-friendly as it could be.

This is why I NEVER use the Stampin Up adhesive runner...EVERYTHING falls off with it, heavy or not! I found a glue runner that is very strong, from Wal-mart in the craft section...I'll have to look at the name in a bit tho.

The only 2 runners that I've found that work reasonably well are the Duck tape runners and the Creative Memories runner. But they get so expensive! So I finally switched to the red Scotch ATG. Easy to use, more economical, and stuff really sticks!

If it is mono multi glue, I hope the price is comparable to other stores. Because with SU we have to add on the S and H plus tax. Just a thouht to consider about price.

Besides the cost effectiveness, the other reason I ordered an ATG gun is the intense hold. I've heard it's fab.

Is the ATG considered a "glue runner"? I've heard raving reviews for that thing, and I would hate to get it only to find out that in the long run, it really doesn't hold.

I recently got an ATG as well, but haven't gotten to use it yet. I hope it works well. Tombow mono runner, doesn't hold up at all on my cards. I love mono multi, but hate using liquid glue, though it does hold up very well!

I was just about to post this same thing- that stuff sticks the best! but the runner is a little irritating, not as smooth to use as the stampin up runner

I've not had a problem with the Herma/Dotto glue dots runner over the years. (Don't care for their tab runner, though.) Of course I only use the dot runner to adhere paper and CS, not embellishments. My husband and son still have cards from a few years ago that are fine and my 5 year old scrapbooks are still holding well. I'm pretty liberal with the sticky stuff, though.

Are the ATG and refills as pricey for you as they are at my LSS? $50 for the gun! I saw that and didn't even check out the tape. But I pay almost $4 for a Dotto refill so maybe in the long run it'd be worth it. Also, with the ATG do you have any time to reposition or once stuck is that it?

The gun is about $36 at framingsupplies.com. Then the tape varies by type. I have some gold (acid free), but mainly use the cheaper 987. It's 60 yards for around $2.50!

Oh, sorry. Missed this part. You have a bit, but not much. If you're careful, you can still get it apart without *too* much damage for about 20 minutes. (I have to use twine/hemp/floss to "cut" it apart.) It's not as forgiving as Multi/Scotch quick dry, but it is much more forgiving than sticky strip.

There's a simple reason those cards are falling apart...the layers were not burnished after they were adjoined. I wrote a book on glues and adhesives (The Complete Guide To Glues & Adhesives), every company I spoke to when doing the research for the book said the same thing:

crafters should read and follow the directions on the container; apply liquid and semi-liquid glues and pastes sparingly in a thin, even layer; burnish, burnish, burnish all adhesive and glues after adjoining the layers.

About the only two types of glues and adhesives that do not require being burnished are hot glues and solvent-based cements and glues. Although there are a few solvent-based glues that require being burnished.

A PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesives) MUST be burnished...glue runners are a PSA.

I'm somewhat surprised that the gal at the scrapbook company didn't know this...it's common knowledge.

Thanks for the link, Amy. I'll have to check and see how long the Dotto roll is and figure out relative prices. 20 minutes play time should be fine -I usually know within seconds if I've got something crooked, which is more often than not and why I like the Dotto.

And thanks for the info, Nancy, that makes sense. I burnish, not because I read the instructions but because it just seems if I really rub the layers they'll somehow know I'm serious about them sticking together, lol!

I love mono multi - and I use a clean brayer each time I use it. It works great. I just use a tiny bit of glue. I usually turn the card upside down and brayer the heck out of it. Helps to make my fold crisp, at the same time --

Just popping in with a vote for Scotch Tacky liquid adhesive... it's the same price as mono multi... but you get twice as much! I find it identical in quality.

Oh, yes, me too! And I can pick it up at Target instead of having to order in bulk online. :-) Also, the Scotch lid is designed so that you can keep the bottle upside down. Makes the glue flow better.

If you ever do have to burnish, place a piece of scrap vellum over the area being burnished....shine-free burnishing.

Amy,
I read your tip about the Scotch adhesive in another thread and thought I would give it a try. That stuff is great! Like you, I also like the fact that it is accessible and reasonably priced. I never thought I would switch from mono but I like the Scotch even better! I would always order the mono from scrapbookpal but you have to spend $25 to get free shipping. I can pick up the Scotch easily when I'm running errands.

Thanks for sharing a great tip!

Gonna have to disagree with this statement.
We are crafters here...not scientists. I have never heard of the term PSA until you posted it.

this is sold elsewhere too, SU mostly offers it as a convenience for their customers. Most people call it SNAIL or Mono Adhesive. It is good in it's own right but, has issues sometimes depending if you live where it is humid. I use the brayer to help hold the tack to paper.

I just bought an scotch/3M atg & I am in love with it.

I personally don't like Ad-Tech runners. Yes, they seem to hold pretty good but I can't ever get the roller to work and when it does I get a big blob of sticky that ends up on my finger or somewhere I don't want it to be. The last time I used one I got so frustrated I threw the thing away and said I'd never buy another one. I like the Dotto myself. I haven't had a problem with it so far. I'd really love that have the ATG and I know in the long run it would be a savings, but can't seem to bring myself to spend that much of a chunk of $ for adhesive, plus you have to always order the refills on line and in bulk. Easier for me to get Dotto at M's with a coupon and call it done and $4 is a heck of lot easier to come with!

I was surprised that someone working for a scrapbook company did not know that adhesives have to be burnished...that is 'common knowledge' to the majority of individuals who are involved in a crafting business that either sells adhesives or sells products that use adhesives.

PSA is a term commonly used by those who either sell adhesives or sell products used with adhesives (i.e., scrapbooks). Most crafters are not familiar with the term...

That's too bad the Ad-Tech didn't work for you. I really think it is a very econnomical product that does a great job. I have Dotto, too byt it just doesn't work on tiny stuff. I made some tags last night and if I'd used Dotto to adhere the tiny punched trees & snowflakes I' d still be trying to get them on it.
I worked so much with Ad-Tech that I can get it to do just about anything I want it to. I did have a bad one a month or two ago and tossed it, too! No problems since!! Ad-Tech is just like what Mono or Snail used to be. The dispensers are just like the ones used before it was redesigned and supposed to new & improved. Sometimes new & improved is not always better.
I am glad that Dotto works for you. I use it to scrapbook with but not with making cards. I am in a card club and make at least 24 cards a month. I use what works and save the expensive adhesives for my scrapbooks! I have even used Ad-Tech to adhere ribbon and does it ever stick and stay put!

I love the creative memories runner. I even talk about it at my workshops. I use both the snail and the CM tape, then tell them that if they want it to stick for the long haul, use the CM tape. I won't lie and tell them SU Snail is best when it is not :( For personal use, I use ATG or CM all the time.
