Default brads poking through card-Beate example

I saw a card on Beate's blog (it was her last sketch card until January) and saw that she put brads in the corners of her base card (after using the ticket punch). Now correct me if I am wrong, but would the brads not show through on the other side? It was simply the base of the card...no other layer was present.

I was wondering if many stampers don't care (including Beate) if brads can be seen from the inside of the card.

It doesn't bother me. I rarely cover up the backs of brads. It's just part of the card--shows it's handmade.

Same with eyelets. I don't care if the back shows or not. JMO.

I try not to have anything poking through (brads or eyelets) but if I do I just put an insert inside the card to cover it up.

I prefer not to have anything poking through the back of my card.. If need be, I layer my card. For example - in the rare case that I might use just one layer on the front, I will cut out the size of coloured cardstock I'm using to cover my base white cardstock in order to create a layer in which to use my brads so they don't poke thru to the back. I don't mind so much with my eyelets - they don't look so bad on the inside of a card.. but not brads thanks!! An alternative I use to layering with brads - is to cut the legs off the brads with a wire cutter, and then adhere the brads to the paper with a glue dot.

Hope that gives you a few ideas!

I'm not a big fan of the brad show through, but if the card was from Beate, I'd love it!

Doesn't really bother me all that much. I don't do it very often, but if I thought it added to the design, I'd go ahead and do it. I wouldn't add an insert, either. Since I'm confessing, another thing I do that's every bit as unkempt when you open the card: if the ends of ribbon wrap around the the base, I just glue the 1/4" to 1/2" to the base and call it good (in other words, the ribbon doesn't go all the way around, raw edges are glued in place). Usually, I like to do this on a different layer, but again, if it adds to the front design...

I guess I could cover it up with an insert or wrap the ribbon all the way around, but that strikes me as wasteful. (My husband would ROFLHAO to hear me say that. I actually try to save $$ with my stamping supplies?!) : )

Yep, seeing the brad legs for me is a no-no. (kinda like seeing someone's thong out of the top of their jeans when they lean or stretch!)

I like Deborah's hint: cut off the legs and attach with glue dot. Have to try that!

ROTFL!!!

Brad butts!!!!!

I dont like the 'brad butts' showing thru to the inside of the card either. For some reason, I am fine with eyeltes (in the corners only) but not brad butts

If I have to have them on that layer, then I will do an 'insert' of paper, and glue it to the inside, and have an image stamped on it so it looks like it is there for a reason other than covering up the brad butts!

"Insert" girl here, or I'll use a punch of some sort to cover just that spot if it looks OK (do that with ribbon, too). Brad butts (good one! ) eyelit behinds, ribbon ends -- just seems like unfinished business to me .... and after all the work of making a great card, it doesn't take much to finish it up. (But then, when I was in cross stitching mode, my MIL taught me about what the backside of that should/could look like -- so maybe it's a carryover!)

No brad-butts for me, either! I don't like anything showing on the inside except maybe ribbon, and that usually is because I forgot to put it around a piece before I glued it to the front, so I cut a slit in the card fold and run it all the way around.

I always put my embellishments on the layers that will go on the card base so they don't show. It would look unfinished to me otherwise.
I want to get some of the faux brads to use when you need a little something extra on a card.

I totally agree...I like a *finished* look inside so I often add the cut to size piece to cover the brad legs or ribbon edges or use the glue dot method. IMHO I just think it looks much neater.

I don't think it looks finished-I would consider covering on the inside, with slight edge so it looks like an intended layer.

This is such a funny issue. It's like which way the toilet paper is supposed to hang from the roll! It's funny because the people who care a *lot* are mostly the ones who post on these threads.

I don't particularly care if my brads show or not. And I have never added a brad bandaid to the inside of my card to cover them up! LOL

Good analogy! LOL (Just for the record -- what I send out needs to look a certain way, but what I receive is way OK -- sorta like... the TP needs to be under at my house, but I'm totally OK with someone else's "cultural diversity" in their bathroom!)

Brad band aids -- I love it! (And I even have a couple of band aid stamps -- just may have to use them for this!)

I would never do it ~ it looks unfinished and sloppy, IMO.

For me, it's all about the little details that make a card great.

If showing the guts is good enough for Tim Holtz, I figure no problem for me. I've never try to hide them when they are in the base card themselves. When framing an image, I always pop the layer up on dimensionals.

One thing I've noticed is that when trying to hide them with another layer of cardstock that is not raised up on dimensionals, you can always see the bump and the cardstock doen't lay flat. Sometimes it even pulls the layer away. That bothers me more than seeing the guts of the card.

I thought I was the only one that this bothered...

I never let mine show through, and (don't hurt me) I get annoyed when I receive cards where they are not "hidden".

But, we have no idea whether Beate hides hers under or not!

Sorry I am coming to this so late.

I am sorry if my cards would offend so many of you, but I let my "brad legs" show. I love brads too much as not to add them to the base of the card. If I have lots of layers, I poke some brads through all the layers to make sure that card won't ever come apart.
I guess I could add an inner layer (with dimensionals, so it wouldn't look bumpy), but I really don't mind those brad legs showing.

I don't let brads or eyelets show - but it doesn't bother me at all if others do.

Geeze, I really never thought about this issue. Now I'm going to obsess about this all day, rack my brain, paw through my stash of cards, grab all card CDs (yes I photograph my cards so I can remember what I've made, how OCD is that? of course I never upload the cards to SCS!) looking for any brad butts (love that term) or ribbon ends that were inadvertently sent to someone!

On a serious note, I am also surprised at myself because my mother taught me the same thing regarding embroidery, the back should look as good as the front. I just never applied that to card finishing. I will reject a card because the stamped image isn't perfect, or the cuts aren't straight. When making bookmarks I match the ribbon to the ink colors (my boyfriend thought I was nuts!) Yet I will leave the end of ribbon showing on the inside cover of the card. Knowing my perfectionist tendencies, it bothers me that it never occurred to me to "finish" the inside of the card. "Non-finishing" doesn't exactly match my favorite verse in my siggy line. So yes, I would and from now on will finish the inside of the card!

So funny how different people are.. I don't like my brads to show through but sometimes they have to (like Beate's example) but NEVER my eyelets. I don't like that flared look that is created when you set the eyelet.. Interesting conversation though.

Who knew this was such a sensitive topic. I can't imagine getting annoyed at someone who sent a handmade card to me that had them showing....the fact they took the time to send it would be make smile.

Crooked sentiments bother me way more. That's what the jig is for.
