Default Masculine Altered Letters

I am having my first baby in March and I altering wooden letters to spell out his name. I am using primary colored patterned paper. I would like to add embellishments but I don't want to make it too frilly or girly. What are some items I can add to them. I thought about using buttons, any other ideas? Thanks!

Congratulations! What about doing faux leather or faux suede? I think that can look very masculine. Eyelets and brads would look great as well as hemp and linen thread. Hope that helps.

This is a very timely thread because I bought my DH's initials that I wanted to "decorate" for his computer room as a Christmas present, but am lacking in some masculine ideas. My letters aren't wood, but mache, so any ideas are appreciated.

I have just completed my nephews name and I used the pirate papers that are popular at the moment and added some stickers and instead of using ribbon I used twine. This was for a young boy though not a baby.
What about boat/car/bike embellishments seeing as you have done primary colours. What about using the rhyme what are little boys made of " as a theme, puppies, bugs, etc.
All the best and I know because it is made with love what ever you choose will be wonderful.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Keep them coming.

His bedding is actually transportation related, cars, trucks sailboats, etc. I would like to do some 3-D type embellishments, instead of flat things, like stickers. I like the brads and eyelets but am not sure how to incorporate them as the letters are made of wood. Thanks!!

For my nephew's letters I used chocolate ribbon and twine. I love how it turned out.

Lightbulb Using brads on wooden letters

If you want to match the theme of the bedding, you could try to find the set online, then print the detailed info onto a transparency. Usually there is a close up view of the comforter/spread, or accent pillows, wall art, and all the add on things. Maybe you can print those things onto a clear transparency sheet, and trim or punch into a star, circle, or other shape. Use a big black brad for truck wheels, or a silver mini for hubcaps, or the center of the plane propeller. Use a Xyron machine to get adhesive on the back, and fasten the brad as usual, behind the acetate. You have 3D brads, perfect tie in to room decor, and a little subtle interest with the shine of acetate shape showing the paper underneath. Have fun- this sounds like a fun project!
